What's better in an emergency, old glasses or no glasses??

Glasses destroyed in primary school playground incident. Can't get new ones straight away as it's a prescription that can't be done in an hour. Child's prescription is something like -4 in each eye, so quite strong. What's better whilst we wait for replacement specs? No glasses, or ones from a drawer that are a year old and therefore two prescriptions ago?

Will consider getting a second pair, too, but they are expensive and we haven't had a breakage for three years.

Do any fellow-MN-glasses wearers worry about an apocalypse situation where new glasses are no longer available so that you have to keep your old ones going (and if they fall apart you will be able to see f**k all for the rest of time)?!? It is something I worry about on a regular basis 🙄

Yes! That's why the book/movie 'The Beach' would be my worst nightmare.

DC2 is -4 and has had more than one pair of glasses that hasn't survived PE. Because they usually get two pairs, it's never been a problem but on occasions they've chosen expensive glasses, the old prescription has had to be worn whilst awaiting repair. The old glasses are also used for the watersport DC competes in on days they don't want to wear contacts and even if contacts are worn, the old glasses are in the buoyancy aid pocket in case of disaster!

There's no way DC would cope without some kind of correction, even if it's a prescription behind.

I hadn’t thought of that. But it’s a good point! I might buy myself a medical bracelet.

As a side issue, isn’t it a pain that watersports are such an issue when shortsighted? Just little things like going snorkelling on holiday are so difficult to navigate. Glasses with big goggles? Contacts with small goggles? Prescription goggles? Backup options in case it all goes south in the water. Sigh.

I swim, snorkel and scuba dive wearing lenses. Haven't ever lost one. I'd be legally blind if my sight couldn't be corrected by lenses or glasses.

Optometrist here! Yes wear the old ones until you get new specs

YABU to not have a backup pair of glasses for a prescription of -4!

We have the pair from a year ago. He's wearing those today. He needs new glasses every six months and I don't think we can get a second pair every time, especially as it's been so rare he's broken them (this is only the second time in four years). We usually get new frames in July and get new lenses in the old frames in January. I get him sunglasses in the summer and it looks like he'll need swimming goggles and sports goggles this year, too.

They were about £60 last time. I can't remember why but they aren't super expensive frames. They are only a month or so old so I don't think we'd get a voucher again this quickly?

NHS repairs or replaces for free as requir we X, your optician issu we s the voucher, if they refuse ask to speak to manager and ask for proof they've run it past their NHS contact. If you've pai do £60 it's for a frame upgrade coatings or thinned lenses

@Dinnerdinnerbatman this site was really good for swim goggles. Not a hideous price either. Got for DH and DS and they are both high prescription.

Old ones I'm -9.50, and can't see where my clothes are to get dressed in the morning

NoBiscuitsLeftInMyTin · 08/02/2023 16:35

I’m -5 and as blind as a bat….. anything would be better than nothing

MoreSleepPleasee · 08/02/2023 16:40

Old ones of course. Always have spare.

The internets are full of articles about how bad it is to wear an old prescription. I suppose having no correction is worse, though?

When mine broke once and I wore old ones for a bit, my eyesight seemed to get a little bit better.

TaRaDeBumDeAy · 08/02/2023 17:01

I'm -4.50
