Putting things in my washing up bowl!

Magpiesalute · 06/02/2023 17:08

I have a pet hate and wondering how normal it is. I hate it when I’m washing up and people drop things into my washing up bowl for me to wash. I like a pile on the bench to the side, then I can take items and rinse them first if necessary - I hate bits in the water. I know what’s in there (no surprise sharp knives) and I can do it at my own pace.

As a result my husband likes to drop things in unannounced and watch my head explode! Double points if he totally distracts me and manages to get something big in there without me blocking him and/or he slightly splashes me. This has become a bit of a game now. So, I need your wisdom:

YABU: the things go in the bowl eventually, stop being weird.

YANBU: If you’re washing up, you get to control what goes into your bowl and when. Back off!!

p.s this is lighthearted, I realise there are more important things in life to worry about

The minute he put something in my bowl, I would walk away saying "Oh, thanks for taking over".

This. Do it every time.

My dishwasher is right next to the sink and the knobbers (yes DH and DS I mean you!) in my house prefer to dump their dirty pots in the sink rather than spend two seconds opening the dishwasher door!

Absolutely infuriates me!

Mine does it too. I asked him if he wanted a lesson on loading the dishwasher the other day.

Washing up bowls are a gross phenomenon full-stop.

EmmaM84 · 07/02/2023 09:25

My OH really enjoys dropping sharp knives into a sink full of soapy water. That's always a fun game 😡

This brings back memories of when I was in student accommodation many moons ago. Like the OP I would always rinse dirty dishes and stack them at the side next to the sink of fresh, hot, soapy water ready to begin washing them. (I am a Virgo if that makes any difference. 😉)

Anyway, a fellow student had a habit of boiling loads of fresh vegetables, pulses etc. into some sort of disgusting looking inedible gloop stew in a big pan. Afterwards, the pan would have a thick crust of said gloop coating the inside.

So... I prepared my sink of nice hot etc. water, then nipped to the loo.
I returned to find.... gloop encrusted pan dunked straight into my fresh, hot, virgin, washing up water. 😱😱😱😱😱😱😱

How I stopped myself from grabbing it out, marching to the filthy cah's room, and bringing it down on her head, I'll never know.

The memory haunts me to this day.

I could have written your post! I have always hated when people do this.

In my head I still do the washing up order I learnt from the Brownie Guide manual. Glasses, then cutlery, then plate and pans last of all. If I am feeling particularly obsessive I will arrange the washing up in that order on the side. So anyone barging in and dropping things straight in to the water gets short shrift from me.

Magpiesalute · 07/02/2023 10:06

Thanks mumsnet! I’m officially not weird.
That vegetable gloop story makes me shudder! 🤮

That would be soup then 😀.

Cullen79 · 08/02/2023 21:00

Absolutely agree with you, it's not good at all. And what's the point washing things up if it becomes a swimming pool for food??!! 🤷🏼‍♀️
A friend of mine used to do it, so I'd step away and let them continue with the washing up then. Then later redo my own stuff because you can see the grease on things... You should ban him from the kitchen when you're in there and if he doesn't comply punish him 😁

Soapy soup.

Ideatcakeforbreakfast · 08/02/2023 21:13

I hate this too. My other half is worse and leaves his breakfast dishes in dirty washing up water all day so when I get home I have to empty the sink and wash up his bowl 🤢🤮. I've told him so many times to just leave it on the side if he's not got time!

UnctuousUnicorns · 08/02/2023 21:14

"That would be soup then"

Indeterminate coloured sludge more like! 😅

piedbeauty · 08/02/2023 21:35

I hate when dh leaves a knife balanced on the edge of the sink. FFS, it's a sticky knife with butter on. Put it in the shagging sink to soak!!! 🙄😡

NewPapaGuinea · 08/02/2023 21:41

I hate a sinkful of dirty dishes. They need to be taken out before they’re dealt with, so just put them on the side to begin with. Same as people piling up stuff on a chopping board.

somuchtolearnabout · 06/02/2023 17:11

YANBU I fucking hate crowded washing up bowls and random shite in the sink. You husband is a sociopath. LTB

Thanks for getting the FUCKING Blippi song in my head

SinisterIslandRoundabout · 08/02/2023 21:54

FIL was guilty of this when he came to stay until I asked him not to and to put dirty things straight into DW. It’s beyond him to do this apparently so he leaves dirty stuff on the clean draining board above DW. 🙄

No pleasing you, is there? Poor old bugger.

😂 No there isn’t not when he puts dirty stuff on a CLEAN draining board when he could put it on the other side of the sink along with the rest of the washing up. Guess I’m just fussy.

Blossomtoes · 09/02/2023 10:26

I think you might be 😉

Ilovecleaning · 05/06/2023 23:05

I am on your side, OP. IMO a lot of people don’t know how to wash up. They dump dishes full of food bits into a bowl of soapy water, swish them round then put them on the drainer. Then they dump MORE dirty dishes in the SAME water, swish them round …Yuk!
I also hate stained cups , mugs and cutlery! Doesn’t everyone know about Steradent tablets???
😊😊😊

kitchenassistance · 05/06/2023 23:30

God, I hate this. I can't bear it if I'm washing up at someone else's house who doesn't have either a washing up bowl or a double sink, so anything unexpected containing liquids (like half a cup of tea) has to go straight into the washing up water. And you can't rinse anything. Grim.
