(Lighthearted) He took the lid off the slow cooker

My husbands friend came to stay yesterday. I had a busy day planned and was in and out with the kids so chucked a meal in the slow cooker. It was about an hour in and when he came in, he said 'oh smells good' while lifting the lid for a better sniff. I think he doesn't know slow. Cooker etiquette!

Was he being unreasonable??

Aibu (he was not)
Yanbu (he was)

If there was another button for 'who really cares' I'm sure that would get all the votes. But as the title says, Lighthearted! For those slow cooker fans

As I said yesterday - I think the 'etiquette' issue is the nosiness - peeking into someone else's cooking without asking - rather than any practical implications of taking the lid off the slow cooker. It's like snooping in someone else's cupboards, in a way.

Looking in your own slow cooker (or any other pan in your own kitchen) = fine.

Peeking into someone else’s slow cooker = nosy and a bit rude.

👆🏻 absolutely this!

People saying it will lose 10 or 20 degrees every time you lift the lid need to acquire a thermometer and a tiny bit of critical thinking ability.

I never take the lid off mine! I got a slow cooker recipe book the first time I got it and it said in there that every time you take the lid off you need to add 30 mins to the total cooking time to make up for lost heat.

But now you all question this - I tend to put stuff in cold whereas the book always suggests heating up/pre-browning. I expect that adds half an hour by itself!

Maybe it's just an old wives' tale I've fallen for :D

I always just stir it at the end, it looks god awful pre-stirring, especially if fat has risen to the top because all the liquids separate but it's fine once stirred together. Does make it easier to skim if it's too fatty as well.

Losing 10-20 degrees seems a bit of an exaggeration (do they mean farenheit?) but it will lose some heat because steam escapes when you take the lid off, and will be replaced by room temperature air between the contents and lid, until that air is then warmed by the contents and again provides an insulating barrier.

I wonder if there is a myth busting/checking video on youtube - I bet there is.

The manual for my slow cooker tells you not to remove the lid during cooking, or you will extend the necessary cooking time. I still have my sneaky half-time stir, though, to distribute the contents and make sure everything cooks evenly.
