(Lighthearted) He took the lid off the slow cooker

My husbands friend came to stay yesterday. I had a busy day planned and was in and out with the kids so chucked a meal in the slow cooker. It was about an hour in and when he came in, he said 'oh smells good' while lifting the lid for a better sniff. I think he doesn't know slow. Cooker etiquette!

Was he being unreasonable??

Aibu (he was not)
Yanbu (he was)

If there was another button for 'who really cares' I'm sure that would get all the votes. But as the title says, Lighthearted! For those slow cooker fans

I don't see the problem 🤷🏼‍♀️

10HailMarys · 06/02/2023 16:47

I ... don't see what the problem is?

I take the lid of my slow cooker to see how things are progressing or to give things a stir all the time. Obviously you can't leave the lid off for hours but lifting it up to check on what you're making is fine.

Seraphina1993 · 06/02/2023 16:47

Do you mean a pressure cooker?

Because if you do then yeah taking the lid off would be counterproductive but you can definitely take the lid off a slow cooker to sniff/stir whatever. They're not the same thing.

AccidentallyRunToWindsor · 06/02/2023 16:49

Oops, have had mine off to sniff in the last hour twice as it smells so nice!

Divebar2021 · 06/02/2023 16:49

It’s not like opening the oven door when you baking a cake - no harm will occur.

HelpMeGetThrough · 06/02/2023 16:54

Is this the slow cooker version of opening the oven door and the cake sinking?

If so, I'm buggered, lifted the lid earlier for a quick taste.

Forestdweller11 · 06/02/2023 16:38

Strictly speaking it's bad form to take the lid off and peer in. I do, but only when there's about an hour left to go so its already up to temperature so to speak .

Says who?!

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 06/02/2023 17:00

You can lose 10/20°c of temperature every time you take the lid off....doesn't stop me doing it though!

picklemewalnuts · 06/02/2023 17:01

Really rude manhandling other people's cooking!

Slow cookers have such a low output that taking the lid off seriously slows it down by releasing all the heat.

In practice it doesn't matter as you aren't in a hurry. If you've left it late to get started though, don't lift the lid!

NewFriday · 06/02/2023 17:03

It is a bit odd to walk into someone else's kitchen and start messing with pots and pans, isn't it? But I'm another with no idea you weren't supposed to lift the lid on a slow cooker

NewFriday · 06/02/2023 17:05

IME most slow cookers run too hot to be genuine slow cookers anyway. He's done a good thing 😆

VouloirCestPouvoir · 06/02/2023 17:05

All I know is DH would have had "stir the slow cooker after an hour, then back away from the slow cooker, DO NOT lift lid again" written into our wedding vows. He's obsessed.

Findyourneutralspace · 06/02/2023 17:07

Surely that is the joy of a slow cooker, lifting the lid to let it waft through the kitchen?

It depends. If it’s a stew that doesn’t matter if it’s ready in 6 or 10 hours then lift away. Mine perfectly cooks a gammon in pretty much bang on 4 hours though. Every time I have to lift the lid in the first couple of hours it’s on, it adds 15 mins to the cooking time as it cools almost instantly and takes ages to reach the heat it was previously. If he’d have done that twice with my slow cooker (for no reason) I’d have had to delay dinner by half an hour which would probably piss me off

TwilightSilhouette · 06/02/2023 17:09

Completely normal to take the lid off a slow cooker. I do all the time. How else will you stir it?

Absolutely

SDTGisAnEvilWolefGenius · 06/02/2023 17:10

Looking in your own slow cooker (or any other pan in your own kitchen) = fine.

Peeking into someone else’s slow cooker = nosy and a bit rude.

HyacinthineMacaw · 06/02/2023 17:10

I think would be annoyed if someone interfered with my cooking (if they understood that’s what they were doing). But I’d also be happy if he thought what was cooking smelled good, so I don’t really care too much.

I am firmly in the ‘don’t take the lid off’ camp, though. I allow myself one big stir half way through and try to resist it the rest of the time!

I disagree. It makes no odds to take lid off.

Is there some special slow cooker etiquette I don't know about...?

Of course there is;

  1. You approach the slow-cooker directly, at right angles,
  2. Touch your forelock,
  3. Apologise for what you are about to do,
  4. Remove the lid,
  5. Stir, taste, add seasoning, stir again.
  6. Replace the lid.
  7. Take one step backwards and bow your head slightly.
  8. Turn smartly to the right and go about your business.
I think I read it in Paul Burrell's book.
Cas112 · 06/02/2023 17:15

I always take the lid off to check the food that's cooking Confused

You can disagree all you like 🤷🏼‍♀️ I need my meals done at a certain time between my shifts, and every time you lift the lid the temp decreases by 20 degrees which adds 15 mins of cooking time with my slow cooker

NoBoatsOnSunday · 06/02/2023 17:15

I’d throw that batch out, OP. I wouldn’t eat anything that’s been air-ed on.

🤣🤣🤣

Air-ed on is the new darked on.

CashierNumberSixPlease · 06/02/2023 17:25

I've just taken the lid off mine to add the final ingredients...not sure how else I can get noodles in it otherwise.
