I’m not exaggerating when I say that this is ruining my life. I really need help from someone but I don’t know what to do or where to go.

ive been getting horrendous headaches for the last few months and I actually think I’m going to have a breakdown about it. I’ve been to the doctors and been told different things each time, migraine, stress, tension etc but regardless of what it is, nothing is helping. I’ll describe the headaches below and I’m praying that someone recognises a feature and knows what it is and how to stop it.

  1. it started off a few months ago and at first the headaches were occasional and it got worse and right now it’s everyday or every other day.
  2. they start around lunchtime/afternoon and get worse throughout the day. By dinner time they are unbearable and by night time it is horrific
  3. The pain is almost always on the right. It’s a throbbing ache around my right temple and right eye area. It feels like someone is actually drilling through my eye
  4. random things make the pain worse- sneezing is horrific, as is coughing, moving in general but especially bending down or moving my head down eg to tie my laces and then bringing it back up. The other thing that makes the head so much worse is lying down, the light, touching my right temple/eyebrow area or physically passing stools , it honestly feels like my head is going to explode.
  5. Nothing helps- I’ve had stuff from the doctor and OTC and I’m currently chewing painkillers like sweets and it barely takes the edge off it
  6. I feel sick and occasionally dizzy with them. I’m not always physically sick but sometimes am from the pain
  7. im not tired, I’m not stressed, I’m not dehydrated and I can’t think of any reasons this is happening
  8. ive been to the optician and I don’t need glasses
  9. i get really irritable with them. Little things annoy me and I want to scream and cry or explode all the time
  10. lying down and sleeping for a little nap or a few hours makes it so much worse afterwards. But lying down and sleeping for 12+ makes it a bit better but then it starts to come back at lunchtime after I wake up anyway

please, if anyone has any advice or ideas I’m actually desperate this is ruining my life. My doctor won’t do anything and said even if I do get a referral it will take well over a year anyway and I can’t afford private. I’m really struggling and honestly feel like I could smash my skull with a hammer to get relief

please someone help me😢

Could it be connected to having a sight problem, like eye strain at all? Have you had your eyes checked lately?
Could it be migraine? If so, maybe your doctor could prescribe something more suitable but meantime, for my headaches and other aches and pain, i buy Solpadeine soluble pain killers, only £2 something for a box of 16 which is cheap enough. ( I can't take ordinary paracetamol tablets, hence the soluble variety but they work more quickly anyway, i think. )
Hope you get the headaches sorted soon anyway.

beansmeanz · 05/02/2023 21:38

Hope you get sorted.

DrinkFeckArseBrick · 05/02/2023 21:38

You need an urgent referral to a neurologist and a scan. If you can go private then it's worth doing (even if they have to recommend an urgent scan and refer you back to the NHS for this if you can't afford this on top)

ladyofshertonabbas · 05/02/2023 21:38

Cluster headaches . 😩

LaMereDuChat · 05/02/2023 21:38

With the sweats I would be demanding a scan - could be an issue with your pituitary.

dawngreen · 05/02/2023 21:40

Get your blood pressure checked, and your weight

Ohdearnotagain76 · 05/02/2023 21:41

Could it be linked to your hormones, what contraception do you use? Menopause?

TortolaParadise · 05/02/2023 21:41

Referral to a specialist might be a good idea

Killingitinhollywood · 05/02/2023 21:43

Good luck, could your parents help with a private MRI if nothing forthcoming?

Guiltypleasures001 · 05/02/2023 21:43

Hi op

The one thing that jumps out at me is you say from lunch time?
What are you having for breakfast or lunch, could it be you are allergic to whatever you are eating or drinking

GreenLeavesRustling · 05/02/2023 21:43

Primary exertion headache

I don’t want to worry you but I would want a scan to eliminate something sinister such as a tumour even if it meant getting a loan. Get a referral to neurologist even if it’s a long wait. Have you had any sumatriptan? Does anything help?

That’s actually reminded me of something.. my mum took me to the doctors as a teen and insisted on a check on my pituitary gland so they did a blood test and said it was fine and I didn’t need a scan of it. She wanted a scan for me but they refused. The reason she requested it was my periods started at 12 and were so irregular I only ever had 3 or so a year. It got slightly better as I got older and now I get probably 6 periods a year at 24. I mentioned it to a doctor in an appointment recently who said all women’s periods are different and because it’s not a new change or irregularity and I’ve always had it, it’s nothing to be concerned about IUSWIM

OP if you gave me a check list, those are my symptoms.

I was treated for sinus infections for years with no effect.

Turns out the pain was caused by clamping my teeth together at night.

The issues were solved for me by wearing a mouthguard. It took a period of investigation, some time on amitriptyline and scans to determine that. In the end it was solved by a very simple test where the ENT specialist stood behind me and put his fingers into my mouth and pushed onto the joint between the top teeth and bottom teeth. The pain was intense. I actually bolted out of the seat. There may have been some light screeching on my part.

I feel for you, I can't wear my mouth guard at present for other reasons and I'm having all these symptoms again, it's awful. I'd forgotten just how debilitating it is.

It could be worth checking if you have a dental issue like this. I genuinely thought I must have something very seriously wrong with me.

Best of luck getting to the bottom of it, bad headaches can be frightening on a visceral level.

maltesersarethedevil · 05/02/2023 21:44

Yah e you had your eyes tested, if not get it done asap and ask for OCT scan. It probably isn't but could be Intracranial Hypertension.

I have a colleague with the same symptoms.

laalaaland · 05/02/2023 21:45

My partner has cluster headaches and he says your symptoms fit.

You can get oxygen through your doctor and this can really help to abort the attack.

Cluster headaches are really nasty but there are ways to manage it to reduce attacks. There are Cluster headache groups on FB that are really helpful.

(Do your research on sumatriptan before deciding to take it.)

Flamingle18 · 05/02/2023 21:45

I get bad sinusitis- neilmed sinus rinse help a lot. Also are your eyes ok? - bloodshot, red, sensitive to light etc? I get scleritis which is inflammation of the sclera and it causes intense pressure and pain in eye and head.

purplefacemask · 05/02/2023 21:45

It's cluster headaches. Oxygen therapy is used for acute attacks. You'll need to take Sumatriptan for the pain and Verapamil for prevention.

Get your blood pressure checked, and your weight

I’ll get my blood pressure checked again thanks. It was fine when checked before but I’ll get it checked again

my BMI is 21, I’m 5 foot 6 and 9 stone 5 x

You can get a private scan for around 300/400 and self refer with some companies which is cheaper
not ideal but in this case it will be a quick way to rule out any lesion
you can then get the gp to do urgent referral or referral to neurologist or headache clinic depending on results

Floatyunicorn · 05/02/2023 21:47

My migraines were always on my right side and at their worst felt like somebody was taking a sledgehammer to my skull.
I know you said you tried amitriplytine but how long did you try it? It took me 6-8 weeks and 3 dose increases until it worked for me, and when it did it was amazing. I also recommend the migraine centre in london, they will give you a consultation over the phone with a migraine specialist for a donation, whatever you can afford. They sent me a treatment plan and also said they can write to your GP if need be to get them to prescribe treatment. Dont give up.
Also i know they are daily but start a food and drink diary, i found caffiene and artificial sweeteners and any citrus fruit a massive trigger. Good luck x

That is really interesting, I’ve always been a tooth grinder since childhood according to my dentist. I had a mouthguard fitted and I wear it at night to stop it because I was grinding my teeth apparently

I hope you’re doing ok sorry you were in pain too x

Sounds like sinus related, especially as most triggers for the pain you mention are pressure related, bending, coughing, sneezing, pooping. Have you tried sudafed and ibuprofen, and antihistamines? Steroid nasal spray?

Mum5net · 05/02/2023 21:47

Headaches nurse at clinic told me to lead v quiet life. Same bedtime seven days a week, no late nights, no binge drinking, no long lies, get up same time. No skipping meals, eat regularly. Cut back on caffeine and SUGAR.
she said it’s dull, dull, dull but it works

I suffer with cluster headaches (also known as suicide headaches) and they are horrendous. I have Injections (sumatriptin) for it and oxygen when needed. I also see a chiropractor which helps. Definitely push for the right support as it is a very difficult condition to live.
