Would you give en-suite to a toddler or keep it for guests ?

justaquestionn · 05/02/2023 12:28

4 bed house with 3 bathrooms upstairs. 2 en-suite and family bathroom. 1 en-suite is the master bedroom.

Would you give a 2 year old an en-suite now ? Or keep that room for guests and perhaps move the 2 year old into the en-suite when older ?

We have a lot of guests staying over.

No way would I allow a toddler unsupervised access to their own bathroom. Move them when they're old enough to be trusted.

sukiwh · 05/02/2023 12:53

Personally, my kid would get an en suite when old enough to keep it clean and tidy! Jesus Christ, an en suite for a two year old??

R0ckets · 05/02/2023 12:58

See, in the complete opposite. I would give the o suite to my toddler as it will be so quick to get them to the toilet when they’re toilet training. It also stops the upheaval of moving rooms when they’re older.

I think the upheaval of moving rooms would be preferable to the house being flooded which is incredibly likely with a child left with unsupervised access to a bathroom. All it takes is one time forgetting to lock the door and the amount of chaos which could be unleashed by a 2 year old in one night is enough to give me nightmares.

I wouldn't give a toddler unsupervised access to a bathroom - that spells chaos.

I had my own bathroom growing up but not until I was secondary age.

plumduck · 05/02/2023 13:01

Too dangerous to give to a toddler

Tangerinie · 05/02/2023 13:01

Both my DCs had ensuites from babyhood! Never had a flood or anyone attempting to have a random bath in the night. We didn't have a choice as we have quite a strange set up where every bedroom has an ensuite (previous owners did it - I probably wouldn't have as I hate cleaning them all 😂).

You can get locks for the taps so they can't do it and just put all the dangerous items away. If you honestly think every toddler within the vicinity of a bathroom will be hell bent on flooding the place in the night, what is to stop them going into the vacant spare room to do the same?

Do what you like (it really isn't a big deal), but saying it is "incredibly likely" the house will flood if a toddler has an ensuite is nuts

DramaAlpaca · 05/02/2023 13:03

Guests without a doubt. I wouldn't want a toddler let loose in a bathroom.

Think far too young for a en-suite to be honest what I’d they ran a bath or shower in the night etc? Drowned or flooded the house needs to be much older.

Letting a young child having unsupervised access to water doesn't seem like a good idea!

What if they did that in the family bathroom?

You’d hate my house, all my Dc have their own bathrooms. One isn’t even born yet 😂

R0ckets · 05/02/2023 13:13

Logically you'd be much more likely to hear a child getting out of bed leaving their room and going to the family bathroom though. A child accessing a ensuit in their room and mucking about or Turing on the taps would be much harder to hear.

Babsexxx · 05/02/2023 13:13

Yes this is the first thing that even entered my mind was the entire safety aspect I have a 2 yo dd and I couldn’t even imagine she’s into everything she shouldn’t be at the minute!

You'd probably hear if a child got out of bed and went down the hallway to the family bathroom, though. You wouldn't necessarily hear in an ensuite.

nokidshere · 05/02/2023 13:17

I also wouldn't give a toddler unsupervised access to a bathroom.

I would install a lock so they can’t have unsupervised access but once they were confident using the toilet alone, and I trusted them

You can't really 'trust' a child until they are old enough to understand the consequences of their very natural unpredictable behaviour. Just because 'they dont' do something doesn't mean 'they wont' do something. It just means they didn't do it today. And they might never do it, but you won't know that in advance.

Fredthefrog · 05/02/2023 13:22

We have a 4 bed with 2 ensuites. Kids are in the normal rooms and the other ensuite room is for guests. Regular family and friends. I might give it to one if the kids when old enough but I'm thinking tween/teen age.

Entirely depends on the layout of your house surely?!

Eg the other en-suite in our house is joined to our bedroom wall. The family bathroom is next to DCs bedroom down the hall

Mummyoflittledragon · 05/02/2023 13:26

Freak accidents happen with water so no. Not until older.

hobbledyhoy · 05/02/2023 13:26

I'm not sure I understand the question, why would a 2 year old need their own bathroom?

MaverickGooseGoose · 05/02/2023 13:28

No way, mine would just make even more mess.

SoupDragon · 05/02/2023 13:29

No way would I trust a toddler with their own bathroom. Even leaving aside the risks of a toddler and water, all of mine would have made a horrendous mess if basically given a bathroom to play with!

BertieBotts · 05/02/2023 13:31

I am constantly having to fetch my toddler out of the bathroom. An en suite would be permanently looked to them and a total waste!

SoupDragon · 05/02/2023 13:31

ladymacbeth · 05/02/2023 13:09

Having a family bathroom is pretty much unavoidable though.

BertieBotts · 05/02/2023 13:32

You don't leave them unattended in a hallway leading into a family bathroom - different from one attached to their bedroom.

SoupDragon · 05/02/2023 13:32

Anyway' the final sentence of the OP's post is We have a lot of guests staying over.

that alone makes it more sensible to have the en suite room for guests.

familyissues12345 · 05/02/2023 13:33

Guests! We've just gained an extra en suite as we've moved, and we've chosen to have the en-suite kept for guests. Like the idea we always have somewhere clean and ready in case someone needs to stay at short notice
