Would you wear this? What with on top? Is it ok for an outdoor restaurant/bar, sells pizza and bubbly etc?

Plenty of people dress up full on in London, think it depends on age and venue

I'd only expect full on glam at some west end clubs / venues, the kind you might see slebs falling out of in the gossip pages. Or when you get to the outer suburbs like Loughton / South Woodford.

Yes! I once travelled from London for a friends birthday lunch in Reading in a chain Tex-Mex place. They refused to let me in as I was wearing jeans (with heeled boots and a nice top and blazer). No argument would derail the 'bouncer' (at 1pm on a Saturday?!) so I had to go and have lunch alone in Pret until friend and party were finished.

I'm in Liverpool and almost nobody I know socially (across quite a few varied social groups) dresses up to go out for meal and drinks anymore! Much to my sadness haha

The first time I went to see an opera I’d just read that all the cool people dress down for the opera, so went in my usual jeans. My sister told me “dressing down for the opera means leaving your tiara at home”. Oops!

"The opera" covers a wide range. Glyndebourne and the stalls or corporate boxes at the ROH you'd probably dress up. Satyagraha at the ENO you'd dress in whatever you happened to be wearing and that would signify that you're "a serious music lover" who is above such fripperies. I've definitely worn jeans in the gods at the ENO many times and not felt out of place.

I've noticed that in small towns people get really dressed up just to go for a drink or a meal, whereas in cities the look js much more casual with jeans and trainers.

Glyndebourne, ROH and ENO isn’t ‘a wide range’!Grin

People will be probably be watching operas in abandoned buildings, car parks, train stations and other non-traditional spaces during this year - and there definitely won’t be a dress code!

(Yes, I know - irrelevant to thread.)

True, but from context the poster was talking about a conventional theatrical "going to the opera" and even that narrower definition covers a wide sartorial range.

These stupid bumpkins outside London.

MuddlerInLaw · 05/02/2023 16:17

With their ‘silly’ overdressed customs!

I wear leggings/jeans and trainers daily, so wasn’t sure if wearing them on a night out was lacking effort a bit
By whose standards? Who is going to be judging you for "lacking effort"? If it's strangers at the next table then ignore them, if it's people you are out with then they aren't being good friends if they care more about your footwear than your company.

Aye cos Londoners famously all dress like tramps.

Yep, grew up in London and have to say I would not think twice about what I was wearing for a beer and pizza night with friends. Also have lived in Paris and Berlin and the same would go there. Must be a city thing!! I don’t dress like a tramp though (although not sure who would decide on this!), just would come from work or home to the pizza place, certainly wouldn’t be giving it a lot of thought!!
