Doctors ignoring me for a year and now it's come to this

Laurawharton · 05/02/2023 03:46

Aibu to think I should go to a and e tomorrow (really don't want to as I know they are busy) or just face the fact that no one cares
Had a lump appear by my eye last Christmas. I thought it was a spot until it didn't move for 3 months so phoned the doctors who wouldn't see me face to face but told me that it would need to be off in a strict 6 month time scale if it's not gone by then. 6 months later I phoned to say it's still there and now larger. I had a different doctor who basically said 'and why are you telling us that go private it's cosmetic'. Phoned again to get a face to face as everyone was screaming cancer at me, finally got a face to face and told they don't know what it is but yeah go private to have it off or join a over 2 year waiting list.
Anyway about a month ago it grew big again so phoned them as I was concerned as it's so close to my eye and was starting to mess with my vision and give me headache and that side of my face kept going numb. They said they referred me but still heard nothing. Now it's the size of a golf ball red and angry closing up half my eye. Swollen both my eye lid and my under eye. Painful as hell I Carnt sleep don't want to eat, put it this way I was a size 16 now even size ten is a bit big on me. I Carnt sleep properly, people keep staring at me when I go out so I no longer want to leave the house. I saw the doctor again and all he said was he will send fresh pictures along to my referral.
I don't know what to do I'm scared I'm going to blind in one eye due to the pressure and I'm not sure how my face will now look after it's gone if they ever get round to it. How long can they leave me in this much pain.
Is it worth just going down a and e and seeing if they will do anything? my partner has already stopped me twice from taking matters into my own hands aka self removal. My thinking was if I mess up they will have to something, I know it's not the right thing to do but I'm so scared and in so much pain.

google NHS A&E eye clinics - all normal A&Es tell you they deal with eye issues but some then refer you to an NHS A&E eye clinic anyway so best to go straight there if feasible.
You seem to indicate you are in the north so I googled this
www.northmid.nhs.uk/eye-care
The eye casualty number is hone: 0208 887 3417/2274 (Eye Casualty emergency)
ring this - you should be able to ring 24/7 I guess (sorry my phone is flat or I would try the number) and even if they can't help you can ask them who to call in your local area.

Sorry my UK geography is not great! Maybe ring this one when they open at 9am

If you rock up at a&e they will wonder why you are there for a long-standing issue.
You need to state clearly, the new symptoms of numbness in your face & any other neurological type symptoms, mention them first, it then becomes an emergency.
Then relate the rest of the story, weight loss, Drs being utterly negligent etc etc.
Hope all goes well, I am pretty horrified at your treatment.

ittakes2 · 05/02/2023 06:15

It might be different to where you live - I think you might have to go to A&E if you want to go to day. If you can get to the Sandwell General hospital it seems to be better to go there I think as they have a direct link with eye A&E.
bmec.swbh.nhs.uk/services/a-and-e/

BMEC:
The Eye Emergency Department at BMEC provides an emergency service for adults and children with acute sight threatening eye diseases and eye injuries.
The Urgent Care Clinic provides a service for adult patients with less urgent eye conditions.
Patients are treated by doctors of all grades up to Consultant and by nurse practitioners.
Triage:
The department operates triage (a system where patients are treated in order of priority) and a senior ophthalmic trained nurse will decide on the correct priority.
Red – emergencies that need to be seen within a few hours
Amber – less urgent cases that can be seen within an appropriate time frame in the Urgent Care Clinic
Green – non urgent cases will be referred to their GP
Sandwell General Hospital:
There are two A&E sessions per week held at the Eye Clinic at Sandwell General Hospital:
Tuesday: 09.00 – 13.00
Friday: 13.30 – 17.30
Appointments for these sessions are arranged via the General A&E service at Sandwell General Hospital or by calling the Eye Clinic.
Out of hours patients should attend their local hospital’s Accident and Emergency Department.

East or West Midlands? Leicester has a eye casualty dept. www.leicestershospitals.nhs.uk/aboutus/departments-services/ophthalmology/eye-casualty-department/

CrazyCorgi · 05/02/2023 06:23

Is there an Eye Hospital in your area of the country? You need to go to an Eye Hospial A&E, not a regular one. There’s one in Bristol but I don’t know where else. This sounds serious so I’d go asap and get someone suitable qualified to look. BTW an ophthalmology A&E probably won’t be open 24 hours.

MinnieMountain · 05/02/2023 06:23

@holierthanthou73 OP is a SAHM, so I wasn’t assuming. And I’m well aware not everyone drives, I don’t myself. The majority do though.

daretodenim · 05/02/2023 06:23

I think if you're in a level of pain where you can't talk properly and your vision is impacted you shouldn't be waiting to go to the GP. At this point, it doesn't matter the cause of the pain (I mean that it's been building up gradually, rather than just come in suddenly). It's too high a level to be ok.

In most cases waiting a day to get to the GP isn't a problem, but actually this is potentially serious (hopefully not though) and you need medical attention. Your GP hasn't been helpful, you've no guarantee of an appointment on Monday and as with many things that are left untreated, it's become more serious. Nobody here can actually say that it's not an emergency either. Please get yourself to one of the A&Es asap. It will not be a fun day of waiting but you need to be seen.

I really hope it turns out to be "just" cosmetic - and you get at least some decent painkillers.

dottycat123 · 05/02/2023 06:24

It sounds like the GP who actually saw it thinks it is a cyst rather than anything more sinester. Cysts can become infected and grow causing new problems. I would go to an A&E , preferably an eye one as your vision has become affected which significantly changes things and should be considered an emergency.

Wtfhusband23 · 05/02/2023 06:24

This is shocking! Where abouts are you?

queenatom · 05/02/2023 06:40

Definitely second the recommendations to go to a specialist eye hospital A&E for this if at all possible. I've had an eye emergency before involving sudden vision loss and its absolutely the best place to be. I think the chances of them taking you seriously there are much higher.

Pickledprune · 05/02/2023 06:48

Sending massive hugs OP please go to A&E and emphasize the new symptoms aswell huge hugs xxx

Hups · 05/02/2023 06:50

As others have said, get yourself to A+E, even if you don't have an eye clinic.
You can't afford to mess about when it comes to eyes and sight.
Hope all goes well for you.

ScruffGin · 05/02/2023 07:06

QMC in Nottingham have an eye casualty as well

Iizzyb · 05/02/2023 07:27

I got referred straight from the optician to the hospital eye clinic once. However with your overall history I think I would try a&e today. Failing that, optician tomorrow but please make sure they know all symptoms including weight loss xx

CornishTiger · 05/02/2023 07:28

Definitely a&e. Your GP has been shocking.

WuTangGran · 05/02/2023 07:31

Get a taxi and go now.

Gawpygertie · 05/02/2023 07:31

My adult ds had a chalazion a few years ago and ended up going privately as it was uncomfortable and embarrassing.
Although it was a quick minor procedure it cost about £350 I think. The initial consultation was extra.

Toddlerteaplease · 05/02/2023 07:34

Nottingham also has Eye casulty.

user1471530109 · 05/02/2023 07:36

OP, if you're Birmingham, go to City Hospital, Dudley Rd. The eye A&E is there. Get a taxi or get a friend to take you/drop you off.

tulips27 · 05/02/2023 07:37

So sorry to hear this OP. As others have said, you need to get to an eye hospital today. Emphasise your unexplained weight loss when you're there. Ditch the doctor who isn't listening to you and change to another one.

lifeinthehills · 05/02/2023 07:40

That's terrible treatment. Yes, I'd go to A and E and tell them every single symptom. I hope they help you to resolve this.

mycatsanutter · 05/02/2023 07:48

This is awful , really hope A&E get you sorted or at least the ball rolling , good luck

LakieLady · 05/02/2023 07:53

Please go to A&E. I really hope it's nothing sinister, but it needs checking out.

Userblue · 05/02/2023 07:58

It would be easier to advise if you have a picture of the lump (obviously not your face just lump!)
