Water rates

How much do you pay? Ours is around £90 per month, sometimes slightly more. Family of 4, one shower each per day. Ours is more expensive than most people we know, and United utilities estimate we use the same as a household of 9 people?! Surely this isn’t right?

£41 a month based on 4 adults at home. Hoping this might go down a bit since DTs went to uni! Northumbrian water.

Whatnow321 · 06/02/2023 08:22

It was 10 years ago but when we moved into our house we were paying £95 a month which seemed way too much for just at that time 2 of us.

It took us lots of back and forth with the water company to sort the issue as they weren’t really interested. First identifying there was some kind of leakage by monitoring readings when we were away and then working out where the leak was. It turned out there was a leak between the meter and our property.

Took over a year to sort which was painful but our bill then reduced to £25 and the water company refunded us close to £1k for the difference we’d been paying.

id say monitoring your meter readings when away is key to help you understand if there is a leak. Then if there is finding where it is. You’ll be responsible for any leak on your property.

How?

They don't. I've made a mistake. I was thinking of the old sort that had cold water cooling the steam (like a distillery).

LakieLady · 07/02/2023 07:44

I've just found out that our water supplier is the 3rd most expensive in the country. They're also the one that had a record fine for letting untreated sewage into watercourses a year or so ago, and had loads of areas without water at all for days at a time in the summer, so they're useless as well as expensive. I wouldn't begrudge it so much if they were actually investing some of that money in infrastructure.

Water companies ranked by price

I think I need to move. We have the 4th highest council tax in the country, too, and the county council, which is the biggest chunk of it, is likely to put their charge up by 4.99% from April. I daresay the other two councils will do the same.

Really? Wow I've only had 4 people tell me so, luckily you came along too!

MRex · 07/02/2023 08:02

£46/month for 2 adults and 1 child. We have a piping issue though, where cold water travels an unnecessary 3m to the boiler and hot water then has 3m back again before it can go upstairs. When we get a new boiler, it will be moving to a more sensible spot. Trying to work out costs and what we are going to do though, as we'd prefer something greener than gas (ground source heat pump possibly, or solar and heat mats with electric), but costing out our options is not made remotely easy with precisely zero companies doing this. I'd pay just for someone to tell me the costed options with pris/cons and some companies for each.

Mines roughly about 21-23 a month, 6 people, wet room, no bath, dishwasher twice a day, all shower every day, usually 2 wash loads a day plus hot tub with water that's changer every 8 weeks. On a meter aswell

WalkAwaySugarbear · 07/02/2023 10:54

£42pm, family of 4, daily (quick) showers. We are on a meter here and we are paying less than we did in our previous home without a meter, (£51pm). So I guess our usage is quite low for the house size.

Hesma · 08/02/2023 19:45

@JudgeRudy well don’t make stupid statements if you don’t want correcting lol 😉

Correction I don't have an issue with, as you will see from my 3 previous comments. It's people jumping in before they've read the post that irks a bit

Hellyeahbaby · 01/06/2023 19:56

£21 a month, we only have showers, 2 wash loads a day, dishwasher once, and huge hot tub that we change water every 2 months

Do you have a condenser tumble drier on regularly? They use water

No they don’t.

Bromptotoo · 01/06/2023 20:59

As already mentioned check if there's a leak. Make sure all taps are off and allow tanks/cisterns time to fill. Is the meter still showing a flow?

Does it stop if you shut the main stop cock?

No experience with United Utilities but Anglian Water will send somebody out to help you check stuff. They also used to have free 'bits and bobs' like shower timers, things to reduce the capacity of toilet cisterns and diffusers to reduce tap flow if it's running to wash hands etc.

Do UU have a reduced tariff for large families or low incomes?

AuntieMarys · 01/06/2023 21:08

2 of us, £35 a month.
Daily showers ( twice a day at the moment), daily dishwasher 4 wash loads a week.

welshdee · 01/06/2023 21:11

£86 A MONTH.
No meter

shivawn · 01/06/2023 21:13

£0, I live in Ireland and we don't have water charges. £90 a month is a big bill to get!

No they don't... I have a condenser and it's not even attached to the water, and I believe none are. It just collects the water from the clothes instead of being vented out.

They work it out on the rateable value of your property, or whatever the value was back in the 70s or whenever it was they stopped doing water rates in newly built houses and everyone automatically went on to a meter.

Also depends on what your water provider charges, rates differ.

So if your rates are high, you either live in an expensive area for water, or a valuable house, or both.

Mine is £460 a year BTW, 3 bed terraced house.

Or you live in an area where water charges are high.

I was talking to a friend last week who moved house 2 years ago to a similar sized (3 bed) house in a different part of the country. Same number of people living there (2). Same lifestyle. Both houses on a meter, and they are paying slightly over twice what they were paying in the old house, in this new county.

Hellno45 · 01/06/2023 21:37

We use £52. We are 2 adults and 2 kids under 5. I do at least 2 wash loads a day. 1 dishwasher. The kids bath every other day. Me and DH shower everyday.

Check your taps. Do you have any drip? Check outside tap as well. If you can assess the water meter turn all the taps off and see if it's still using water. Wondered if you might have a leak somewhere.

My water was £35 but is now costing £52. Everything has gone up. Although, I'm not sure how they can justify water increase.

Mynotsoperfectlittlefamily · 01/06/2023 21:56

17 pm family of 5, washing machine on most days and a shower or bath every day.

outofthebleu · 01/06/2023 22:11

Is it possible you might have a leak somewhere?
