Water rates

How much do you pay? Ours is around £90 per month, sometimes slightly more. Family of 4, one shower each per day. Ours is more expensive than most people we know, and United utilities estimate we use the same as a household of 9 people?! Surely this isn’t right?

2 adults and teenager, £41 pcm after the government rebate and soakaway discount; Southwest

Isis1981uk · 05/02/2023 19:41

£24.99 a month for two adults, two children. But we're on a meter so only paying for what we use.

Lastdanceagain · 05/02/2023 20:10

£45 for sewage and £49 for water, family of 5, anglia/Essex/Suffolk water.

Seems a huge amount compared to everyone else.

CountryLifeIsTwigsAndShit · 05/02/2023 20:11

£55 per month. Family of 4, but we are not on a water meter.

Geranium1984 · 05/02/2023 20:21

Currently pay £45 but just had a letter through the post to say it's going up to £75 because we are using over 10 bathtubs worth of water a day! Obviously this is ridiculous so I'm taking regular meter readings.
2 adults, a toddler and newborn. I'm lucky if I get a shower 😅

Roundabout78 · 05/02/2023 22:20

I said 1-2 loads. Most days one, occasionally two.
Towels from 4 people’s showers, school uniforms, sports kits. My work uniform needs washing after each shift. Bedding. I don’t think it’s excessive really.

Roundabout78 · 05/02/2023 22:22

Thanks for all the advice!
we don’t own a dishwasher and I’m probably not very economical (wash dishes continuously rather than one big load) I don’t think it equates to our water usage though.
also definitely don’t live in a posh house in a posh area 😁 housing association house in the north west.
going to explore the possibility of a leak.

You don’t think washing towels after one use is excessive?

DonnaDonna0 · 05/02/2023 22:26

Not on a meter and pay £53 a month. I think that is really high considering we’re not on a meter. Three bed, one bathroom.

My rates were about £25 in our previous home. I think yours is quite high for rates

We live in a flat, one of two; like a detached house split in two. (Never been a house though) Both flats paying £50+ We think they are charging both flats the rate for a detached big house with a few bathrooms which are all around us. Would like to challenge it but don’t want to go on a meter.

BarbaraofSeville · 06/02/2023 06:42

There is no logic to rates. We moved from one 2 bed house to another within the same postcode.

The second house cost 10% more than the selling price of the first, was only slightly bigger but did have a bit more outside space.

Our water bill on rates more than tripled.

Do you have a condenser tumble drier on regularly? They use water

You don't need a water supply for a condenser tumble dryer, as they collect moisture in a container within the machine. In fact you don't require a water supply for any of the tumble dryers

The water drains out - not goes in.

HAF1119 · 06/02/2023 07:10

£30 a month, 2 adults 1 pre school child

Though we don't use masses of water I share a bath with the little one daily (not a water thing, just while he's young) and I wash my hair in the bath then give it a quick 1 min shower off after so that probably helps. 1 washing machine use a day, DH showers daily once or twice 5 min max.. we don't do anything conscious to keep it low but it isn't too high

We are on a meter

stopringingme · 06/02/2023 07:14

£35 per month 2 adults 1 child

megletthesecond · 06/02/2023 07:16

3 of us £50 a month.
Daily showers, washing machine and dishwasher.

closingscore · 06/02/2023 07:22

Two adults, both shower daily, washing machine 2-3 x week, dishwasher most days, £17 a month.

Pinkocsb · 06/02/2023 07:30

£40 month. Devon. 2 people (2 single adults), 1 x 5 min shower a day each, washing machine probably 5 x week, dishwasher, no garden, no baths. Shedloads of wasted water from leaks down here.

Water rates depends on the ratable value of the house and the supplier, unless you know what those are how can you say whether a figure is high or low, thats not how it works

Like council tax it is what it is

autumnboys · 06/02/2023 07:40

£57 a month for a family of 5. Everyone showers every day, cannot get the teens to shower a bit quicker. We were about £75 a month for a while but have managed to cut back a bit. We’re on a meter.

notnowbernadette · 06/02/2023 07:42

I think you might want to investigate whether you have any leaks or things like toilets filling constantly

TellerTuesday · 06/02/2023 07:46

£75 per month for 10 months. It's the two 'free' months at the minute so I expect it will rise.

It's rated value, we're not on a meter.

Also with Yorkshire Water so I'm surprised at how cheap yours is @Spotsstripes

bigbluebus · 06/02/2023 07:56

£44 per month (on a meter) - 3 adults in house. That's with Severn Trent, who I think are one of the cheaper companies. We pay less than my mum paid from Dwr Cymru.

Spanielsarepainless · 06/02/2023 08:00

Last house on rates was £90 a month. Swapped to a meter and it went to £30. 2 adults.

PrincessConstance · 06/02/2023 08:15

Ours is £25 a month.
