AIBU to buy some La Mer

lionelewis · 04/02/2023 21:44

Does anyone buy La Mer? Did anyone buy it pre COL?

I have use La Mer skin care on and off for the last 30 odd years. I recently had a facial at one of their stands and the results were amazing!

I just can't justify the cost. Especially if one was to get the full skin regime. You'd be looking at 2000 pounds for a 3 months supply

I use it. I tried a sample pot after having skin issues for a few years and trying all sorts. I told myself I’d never pay that much as it couldn’t possibly make a difference and was one of those people who thought it was overpriced cheap cream. The difference overnight was very noticeable. Even my partner commented (not having been told I’d put it on). I started using it regularly. Over the years, I’ve tried lots of different creams but nothing has ever come close (cheaper and more expensive brands). Everyone’s skin is different though so it won’t suit everyone. I don’t use the full range though (just the face cleanser, cream and the concentrate now and again).

This is how I feel. It works better for me than anything I've tried (yet!)

Ponds dry skin cream is great - I find Nivea too heavy for my skin - I would pay much more than £10 for a moisturiser-

doadeer · 04/02/2023 22:46

I've used La mer in advent calendars it's vastly inferior to my La Roche Posay moisturiser. I absolutely don't get the hype at all. Soooo many better brands around now.

Aldi Caviar is meant to be a dupe for La Prairie (so I heard)
Astral is meant to be the La Mer equivalent (again so I heard).

I wonder if La Mer just buy fancy pots and scoop Astral into them under the cover of darkness and sell them to idiots for hundreds of pounds a jar? Women’s insecurity - a multi million dollar industry!

Not tried those but yes, insecurity makes big money. I used to teach marketing and once took students to an expensive cosmetic co...staff explained how appx 80% of product price is spent on the jar, box, ads, models to promote it, stands in dept stores etc etc so thats 20% of price for the product !

MeinKraft · 04/02/2023 22:50

I found it exactly like the nivea in the blue tub 🤷🏻‍♀️

MissMarpleofstmarymead · 04/02/2023 22:50

To be honest I do find nivea very heavy and in the morning my skin looks like its had heavy cream on. If that makes sense.

Saying that I do get a lot of compliments on my skin and how young I look for my age.

Martinisarebetterdirty · 04/02/2023 22:56

I had La mer years ago, it was too heavy for my (mid 20s at the time) skin (bought post laser treatment), however my mum loved it. You do have to sort of push it in to your skin, not just slap it on like a normal moisturiser. I might try again now I’m older, currently loving Sturm rich cream, but for a cheaper version I did like Aveeno oat.

Aldi caviar day or night cream is basically the same thing but substantially cheaper.

The Aldi one is apparently a dupe of La Prairie, not La Mer. It has different ingredients.

halfgirlhalfturnip · 04/02/2023 22:59

Have used both la mer and Nivea soft and prefer Nivea *1000

I live in hope that I’ll find a cheaper equivalent, but I’m still searching! I tried the Nivea and it was awful for me. You do have to warm the La Mer between your fingers quite a lot though. I can see how some people would find it too thick if they don’t do that.

milkyaqua · 04/02/2023 23:08

Nivea in the blue tin is very similar in texture to La Mer and as annoying to use. Part of the cult of La Mer is the way it needs to be applied, warmed and then patted on at length - and part of the reason it provides results is that attention to application, essentially accupressure and facial massage and lymph stimulation, which gives the skin a glow. You could apply the heavy textured blue tin Nivea in the same way...

TinySaltLick · 04/02/2023 23:08

It is a masterclass in marketing and price enduced placebo. Over and over again in blind and dermatological tests it fails to demonstrate better performance than other products, but because of the cost and terror of aging it continues to exploit people around the world

It is nothing but magic beans, don't fall for it and fritter your money as others have done

NeverDropYourMooncup · 04/02/2023 23:12

I mostly use bog standard emollient ointment with a flannel and my skin is the best it's ever been - being diagnosed with Psoriasis saved me thousands, as I discovered the tub of goop for under a tenner worked for removing eye makeup, as a barrier, for washing, anti chafing, everything except the worst flares when I use a 10% urea product and steroids in extremis.

I would feel very fancy with a two grand skincare regime, but as long as I don't think about the packaging and focus on the results, I'll stick with what definitely works.

Beth262 · 04/02/2023 23:12

Another vote here for Aldi's caviar! Been using it for a few months now and at £7 a jar is well worth it.

BrokenBonesStixStones · 04/02/2023 23:14

Try the inkey list - very reasonable

Weleda skin food - AMAZING dupe - very, very similar ingredients (or near enough the same so I told)

Every beautician who's given me a facial has swore by Nivea but the men's stuff(?) I just used Nivea soft in the past.

SuffolkUnicorn · 04/02/2023 23:22

Estée Lauder

KenAdams · 04/02/2023 23:27

This lady is really good, I usually check her Insta page - m.youtube.com/watch?v=RuvgvW7B9Ao

That said, I LOVE my Tatcha night cream, it feels fabulous overnight.

knobblyribs · 04/02/2023 23:33

I ordered a cleanser from the website and got 2 free samples, one was a 3.5ml pot of it and honestly, it was incredible. My skin was plump and felt so nice. I ended up ordering a small pot as a treat but just couldn't afford to continue buying it at the rate I used it! If you can afford it then go for it! X

Whosaysyoucanthaveitall · 04/02/2023 23:34

I use it, I like the soft cream version best. Honestly it’s excellent, anytime I’m feeling stingy and go to a cheaper product it shows. I use the moisturiser and eye cream daily. I get enough samples for the serums & concentrates that I don’t need to buy them. A little goes a really long way - I probably buy a new pot every 5 months.
I’m in my 40s and have a lot less wrinkles/age lines than my friends.

Nosejobent · 04/02/2023 23:34

I have no idea if this is true but a friend once mentioned that she thinks that the samples of good creams are extra potent to get you to buy the full size product!

knobblyribs · 04/02/2023 23:40

I've been using Lumene Nordic C sleeping cream through the winter at night and Kiehls ultra facial cream which are kinder to the budget and really good! Also the alpha H day cream! So glowy!

Actually, that’s true. I use the eye cream too but always get them as free gifts when I buy the cream. I’ve also had lots of other samples and free gifts.

EasterIssland · 04/02/2023 23:51

I’ve got some. I’m finding it nice tho difficult to melt if I’ve got serum. Would I buy it afain? Only if i had a discount wouldn’t pay full price.

tara66 · 04/02/2023 23:54

Erno Laszlo anyone? Used by Marilyn Monroe and Jackie Kennedy. Jackie loved it apparently.
