Not sure if it is entirely the right thread but I’ve started making hats by hand to try make some money - I’m a stay at home mum of 2, can’t afford childcare to go to work but can’t afford to not work. So I’m a bit stuck (DP works) and there is no one else I have to watch the kids.

My friend told me she would never pay £15 for a hat but it costs me £5 in materials and 3 hours roughly to make so it’s £3.33 ish an hour. I really don’t want less than that as working for £2 an hour is stupidly low.

I’ve attatched images of the hats so if I could get everyone’s opinions I’ll lower the price or keep as they are!

YANBU - the prices are okay
YABU - the prices are too expensive

Oh , are they loom knit? That changes a lot. So the OP can’t make baby blankets or mittens or the other things people have said? Just hats, or maybe scarves? I’m not sure how loom machines work.

They look like they're loom knit to me from the pictures. But the op would be best placed to say if they are.

Unfortunately OP hasn't returned to her thread for a couple of days. Possibly because Mumsnet removed her link advertising her product, or maybe because PP's have realised that describing these hats as 'hand made' is misleading.

Technically made by hand, but it's a loom that does the knitting, not skilled hand knitting with needles. Loom knits produce beanies with a gathered top because it just knits one long tube which you gather at each and push one end into the other. which gives a lovely thick double-walled hat, but a proper hand-knitted beanie would be graduated towards the top as you decrease the stitches.

Op evidently joined the forum with the purpose of advertising/promoting her business, the username was '__studios' ffs 🤣🤣 it couldn't have been much more obvious!!

Please link us to your ebay/depop/etsy online shop. I would be more than happy to pay that for a handmade hat! For a handmade hat in natural materials that price is actually undervalued! I am exceptionally concerned about the materials used for my clothes and where they're made. There are people that care and would love to buy these hats, myself included, just need to advertise yourself accordingly. Even instagram. Dont let the MN get you down. 15£ would be reasonable for a handmade in UK acrylic hat. It's a steal at 15£ for wool x

They did. Think mumsnet removed it

I paid £18 for my handmade hat.

So, clearly I would. Lots of people do.

I would aim to make them a little bit more imteresting with a bobble on top and more interesting wool etc.

People who buy handmade know to pay a little more.

I wouldn't buy a hat from primark.

My slippers are handmade and bought off Etsy. Buyers like me are out here and we like paying a little more for that little bit extra.
