To cancel Tate membership over drag queen story time

I have a Tate membership and have thoroughly enjoyed using it so far, but today I noticed that they have a ‘drag queen story time’ event for children.

Not only do I not agree with children being exposed to any aspect of adult entertainment, but according to a twitter thread the drag queen in question - Aida H. Dee - has openly stated that they were friends with another drag queen who was convicted of raping a child, and has stated that he wears the rapists jewellery to these children’s events - I’m horrified. The Tate have apparently stood by their choice to have this individual doing the story time.

Bloody annoying - the Tate is on our school holiday list, but we’ve missed going because of train strikes in August and December.

I’ll be giving it a wide berth for now. Such a shame!

I voted Yabu. As you don’t need to ask anyone’s permission to cancel a subscription to anywhere, for any reason.
No need to make a production out of it, just cancel your subscription. The same as you could cancel your subscription to Netflix because you don’t like them paying H&M to badmouth the royal family.

People who compare drag to panto are either very shallow thinkers or they are deliberately missing the point.

Drag is hugely sexualised - there are plenty of drag queens who have explained at length why they do not think it's a suitable form of entertainment for children.

Why aren't more women angry that these men dress up as us?

They call us 'fish', they laugh at our bodies and our love for our children with names like Anna Bortion, Miss Carraige, Molestia Child.

There are even two famous queens who named themselves after murdered children ffs. Then there's the queen last year who made the 'hilarious' joke that children should 'open their minds... and open their legs' at the National Theatre.

Please can someone pro-drag explain why they think this is funny or 'inclusive'?

I expect I'll be waiting a long time.

I think cancelling subscriptions you won't use is probably financially savvy

Why would anyone tell the world they are wearing the jewellery of a child rapist to a children's storytime event ?

Exactly and be so proud to announce it.
It's almost like a signal to other child molesters......scummy bastards 😡

There’s a petition linked on the redux article. By a group called art not propaganda.

Even without the backstory, the performer's stage name makes them an inappropriate choice for this type of event.

Making a joke of neurodiversity may be fine, if rather dated and not that clever, comedy for adults but it shouldn't be modelled for children.

That's what I thought. The name is horrible.

Possibly better than Anna Bortion and Miss Carriage and some of the other names (but don't worry, everyone, drag queens celebrate women) but that's the best that can be said.
