To take my kids on a mini break on their ‘sick’ days

Had to pick 6yo DS up yesterday from school at 2pm because he’d had diarrhoea and hadn’t quite made it to the loo. They aren’t sure if it was something he ate at lunch (ie beef stew) or a bug but they have asked me to keep him off for 48 hours just in case. So the rest of the week!

Because it was close to the end of the school day I also picked up 9yo DD who had been complaining of belly ache all day, so they asked under the circumstances I keep her for off at least today, just in case.

thankfully I’m self employed so can be off with them.

Anyway, we’ve had no more diarrhoea and they are both absolutely fine! DD could be back tomorrow, but DS still has to stay off regardless.

It’s a boring 2 days with us just cooped up in the house. They have done all their homework, and tidied their rooms just this morning.

I’m thinking of taking them on a city break to a place that’s about an hour away, where there’s a shopping centre, hotel with a pool, arcades etc. I had been talking about a city break for a little while but we never seem to have a free weekend.

Would it be really cheeky to not send DD in tomorrow and spend their sick days on this city break? Or is that CF territory and teaching them a terrible lesson 🤣

If your daughter is ok she should be going back to school. And your son can just be at home, being a bit bored is actually good for children.

ASimpleLobsterHat · 02/02/2023 09:54

So he's within the 48 hours and so not allowed back into school so as to try and minimise the risk of spreading illness and you are wondering whether you can take him to a busy place and spread it around there? Can't see any problem with that Confused

Myneighboursnorlax · 02/02/2023 09:54

Please don’t let your 6 year old in a swimming pool if he might have a bug www.cdc.gov/healthywater/swimming/swimmers/rwi/diarrheal-illness.html

VenusClapTrap · 02/02/2023 09:56

You shouldn’t do this, and you know it.

I don’t know. If they were at home due to non contagious illness, a long term condition, or for personal reasons I’d say go right for it! But the whole reason they ask for diarrhea to require 48 hours off is to minimise making others ill. So I don’t think I would. I think at this time of the year everyone is run down anyway and a restful weekend might not be the worst thing.

I am absolutely convinced it’s not a bug - he hasn’t been sick, no temperature, no more diarrhoea. Beef gives me the squits, I have to avoid it and never make it at home, I’m wondering if DS is the same.

YAB massively U to consider taking a child who's had D&V in the last 48 hours to a swimming pool! Good grief. Keep him home.

How so?

Absolutely take them out somewhere fun WHERE THEY WILL NOT PASS IT ON. They are still contagious that’s why they aren’t allowed back to school.

So walk in the fields? Absolutely! Wander around an emoty nature reserve? Sure!

City? Swimming pool? NO you will infect so many children of other people.

Maybe stay at home and revise some basic hygiene?

See above - they’re fine. No symptoms of a bug except the diarrhoea which has passed. We’ve had D&V plenty of times in the last, this is not one of those times!

Haven’t even got the energy to tell you why there’s a few brain cells missing. You probably wouldn’t understand anyway so on that note I’m out.

He's had diarrhoea. Sorry should I have said D OR V? It's exactly the same outcome.

caringcarer · 02/02/2023 10:03

You know full well you are being unreasonable but just want MN to validate you taking children on a jolly in school time when 1 child has been told to stay home after diarrhea at school. Avoid areas with other people. No one else wants your son's germs. If bored take him for a walk. Send your dd back to school. You may well get a few days you could take them for a city break if teachers strike.

Willyoujustbequiet · 02/02/2023 10:04

How selfish can you get to consider taking a child who has had diarrhoea to a pool!

Ive read some things on here over the years but christ almighty....

You have made up your mind already so why are you asking?

It's wrong but you are going to do it anyway so just do it

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 02/02/2023 10:05

I don’t mind being insulted but have the integrity to stick around and explain your insult

OP posts:
Plumbear2 · 02/02/2023 10:07

No. You carnt risk spreading the bug to others.

R0ckets · 02/02/2023 10:08

You don't know it's not D & V though do you? How would you feel if you go there and he started being sick, these things often start off slow and they seem better and then they ramp up again.

You would be wholly unreasonable and very selfish to take them somewhere where they could infect others.

Kanaloa · 02/02/2023 10:09

You can have one runny movement without it being D&V. Some foods irritate my stomach like that and my little boy is exactly the same. I’m not saying it’s a great idea to take him swimming and I probably wouldn’t just in case but one loose movement isn’t really D&V. Even at nurseries we only send a child home after 3 strikes - so they’d need to have three extremely loose nappies for us to consider it D&V and ask them to leave for 48 hours.
