To take my kids on a mini break on their ‘sick’ days

Had to pick 6yo DS up yesterday from school at 2pm because he’d had diarrhoea and hadn’t quite made it to the loo. They aren’t sure if it was something he ate at lunch (ie beef stew) or a bug but they have asked me to keep him off for 48 hours just in case. So the rest of the week!

Because it was close to the end of the school day I also picked up 9yo DD who had been complaining of belly ache all day, so they asked under the circumstances I keep her for off at least today, just in case.

thankfully I’m self employed so can be off with them.

Anyway, we’ve had no more diarrhoea and they are both absolutely fine! DD could be back tomorrow, but DS still has to stay off regardless.

It’s a boring 2 days with us just cooped up in the house. They have done all their homework, and tidied their rooms just this morning.

I’m thinking of taking them on a city break to a place that’s about an hour away, where there’s a shopping centre, hotel with a pool, arcades etc. I had been talking about a city break for a little while but we never seem to have a free weekend.

Would it be really cheeky to not send DD in tomorrow and spend their sick days on this city break? Or is that CF territory and teaching them a terrible lesson 🤣

Is beef intolerance a thing??

I never cook beef and they never order it when we’re out. I have no idea why beef gives me a gippy tummy, DS is quite sensitive to certain foods and drink.

Some of the rude comments on here is exactly the side of mumsnet I can’t stand 😞!!

It’s true that you can’t go in a pool if you’ve had diarrhoea. Although is one loose poo diarrhoea? No! Especially if there isn’t any other signs of sickness. Plus the OP has said her son went on to have a solid poo so it’s not diarrhoea. No need for so much rudeness on here.

if it was me I would send my daughter back to school and do something special with my son one on one !

Has he never had a burger before?? They are usually beef.

Maybe keep DD off tomorrow and do something fun. Could you get to the coast or other outdoor place where you won't spread germs?

Please please don't take them swimming. One episode of explosive poo can definitely be a tummy bug, you don't know it's not.

i was a childminder until recently and one upset stomach is not grounds to send home, obviously he needed home to get changed and DD sounds like she joined in. They don’t have d&v do what you like.

My DC’s school are super strict about suspected illnesses. I once had to argue that I did not need to pick DD up just because she had a rash 🙄

I'd take them away ... just no swimming.

This. Sounds fine except the pool. My 5yo was off for a couple of days last week due to a high fever (no other symptoms but school wanted 48 hour exclusion). So we did some fun days out. We did stay mostly outside though... farm park and big adventure playground, not soft play and swimming.

I'd plan the trip away to avoid germ-spreading activities and save the swimming for another time.

If you're convinced they aren't poorly or contagious then go for it, what's the harm realistically? Have a bit of fun with your family, life's too short!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 02/02/2023 11:48

You know the reason why schools require 48 hours is it’s impossible to tell if it was a bug or something else, and if it is a bug, it isn’t gone just because the D or V is no longer active.

So you can’t know that it isn’t contagious

Please don’t go to crowded places and especially not a swimming pool with potential bugs
