I've just found out I'm getting an unexpected £900😁
What would you do with it?
(Single, 2 grown up DC)

I'd buy a Louboutin Cabata

colouringindoors · 02/02/2023 00:07
  1. Long weekend away in Northumberland
  2. Something nice for the house/garden that me and the kids would enjoy
  3. Meal out
abittoofat · 02/02/2023 00:07

Oooh. Some nice ideas here. It’s a tax rebate so unexpected.
I have £7.5k in savings. Plus a mortgage. No other debts.
I don’t THINK I’d have to pay tax on it. (better check that though)
city break a nice idea. I could treat a friend to come with me.
Or shoes/boots.

I'd maybe save £100-£200, the rest if it was really just for me and not kids partner etc I'd go on a nice shopping spree, get some nice new things, some skin care, new expensive makeup I don't really buy now, go for a nice meal somewhere! Just act like I was a rich housewife for day 🤣 if you truely aren't expecting it and you haven't got something that desperately needs replacing then that's what I'd do, treat yourself and go have fun!

antipodeancanary · 02/02/2023 00:11

If I only had 7k in savings I'd save it. Id want at least six months salary in savings.

ItsAnOrgasmNotAFabergeEgg · 02/02/2023 00:53

I have a similar windfall coming and I’m using it to pay for semi permanent eyeliner and lip blush! I know it’s not the sensible choice, but the idea of waking up and looking half decent every morning feels like an investment in myself and will save me time every day trying to get my eyeliner even!

unsync · 02/02/2023 00:59

Pension, you get extra money that way.

TheObstinateHeadstrongGirl · 02/02/2023 01:11

Only on MN would someone refer to £7.5k in savings as “only” as if it was something to panic about 😂

Only??!

Quitelikeacatslife · 02/02/2023 07:00

Couple of lovely nights away and I adore my Dyson hairdryer, got it with birthday money as could never justify it before . Hopefully will have it for years and gives me a smile every time I use it .

follyfoot37 · 02/02/2023 07:00

Why not put it in chat then?

BarrelOfOtters · 02/02/2023 07:08

I’d buy something for the garden. Tree. In a huge pot, water feature, and put in an order for loads of bulbs for next year. Or a new shed. All these things would make me very happy.

Exactly what I was thinking 🙄

Outtasteamandluck · 02/02/2023 07:13

Debt / savings. Boring I know.

WinterFoxes · 02/02/2023 07:14

I'd give £100 each to DC. I'd put £500 in savings and spend £200 on a treat, probably theatre tickets or a weekend away or course I wanted to do.

What a load of patronising wank.

Saving £100 from a £900 windfall doesn’t make you likely to get to six figure savings. Unless you were always getting £900 windfalls.

God some people really take the fun out of life

The point I was trying to make is that it is easy to see any amount as 'not worth saving'.

Got £100? Have a meal out.
Got £1000? Weekend away.
£10k? Buy a newer car.

Saving money requires a change in attitude, so that surplus money is saved and not frittered.

I have friends on fairly decent wages that are always skint with credit card debt. Every spare tenner is spent, so they never even get to the stage where they've saved £100, let alone £1k, £10k, etc.

OP has clarified that she's got £7.5k in savings. I'd round that up to £8k and maybe treat myself with the other £300, but only if I already had something I'd been thinking of doing/getting. Otherwise, I'd save the lot.

Mabelface · 02/02/2023 07:28

Definitely a holiday! If you work hard, then you definitely should enjoy the fruits of your labour occasionally. Go get some sunshine, it's been a bloody long winter.

And no, you don't get taxed on a tax rebate as they're giving you back what you've overpaid.

Mincepieeyes22 · 02/02/2023 07:31

No tax on a tax rebate. i would save half spend half on a treat experience (whatever that means to you!)

For lots of people 7k in savings is six months wages.

Badgerandfox227 · 02/02/2023 07:34

Have a spa day and buy yourself a new top or bag, take the 2 DC out for dinner and then save the rest for a rainy day.

Yeah...I don't understand how that works either. If only I could just make money multiply 😄

Floofyduffypuddy · 02/02/2023 07:56

Op where are your savings?
Ifa bank I think I would use 100 or 200 to open up a stocks and shares ISA and invest into vanguard or black rock index fund.
Then if you do save regularly i would put it aside for some mini breaks throughout the year.

I'd also do the mini thread veins on my nose 👃

This.

If it were mine I'd get botox and my ears repierced with some really nice jewellery. Plus some clothes.

caringcarer · 02/02/2023 08:01

I've got all I need so would probably split between my kids.
