I also had really severe heartburnand indigestion in both my pregnancies. I couldn't even drink a glass of water. Dd1 and dd2 came out needing their first haircut so I think there's truth in that old saying ...

@Mumtobabyhavoc - thank you ! Congrats to you too! At this stage it's very much horrendous sick feeling as well!

It got worse with each pregnancy for me. First I got by on gaviscon and milk (though I've since heard milk makes it worse), second I got by with Ranitidine, which I don't think you can buy OTC anymore, and the third I had to get Omeprazole from the doctor, which was a godsend. I wish I knew about that as an option the first time.

Pantoprazol not recommended in pregnancy. Omeprazole is fine.

Thanks. Just read up on it. Will chat with obgyn at next appt in case I need it. Didn't look into it last time as reflux was just so severe I would've taken anything.

sanityisamyth · 01/02/2023 23:20

Are you in uk? BNF is British so if you're abroad the guidance might be different.

Snugglemonkey · 01/02/2023 23:20

Yes, I was really struggling to eat at all, but omeoprazole sorted it.

Manorbier · 01/02/2023 23:24

@sanityisamyth - yes I'm in UK

I had it bad towards the end of my pregnancy, but I also had hyperemesis. Sleeping sort of propped up helped with my heartburn. I basically put two pillows in a V shape behind me so they sort of propped up my upper body a little.

BurningBenches · 01/02/2023 23:32

I had with all 5. From first trimester til birth.
1-3 I tried gaviscon, Rennie etc. Didnt touch the sides. Didn't matter what I ate or if I ate at all, by pregnancy 3 I was vomiting multiple times daily with the reflux until birth.

Then with DC4 I read on here about omeprazole, so begged GP for it. Total game changer and so got it from very early on with DC5 too.

Every single one has been bald til two though.

CuntyMcBollocks · 01/02/2023 23:50

Ah bloody hell! The heartburn!! Mine was CONSTANT for my whole pregnancy and was so bad that I couldn't even breathe properly. The only thing that worked for me was renitidine tablets. Not sure if that's rhe correct spelling.

Hups · 02/02/2023 00:00

I had it with my pregnancies, I found ice cold milk killed it.
I still suffer heartburn now if I eat something with a high fat content, such as pastry or biscuits, but again a drink of ice cold milk kills it.
The alkaline in the milk neutralises the acidity.

I had awful heartburn to the point I couldn't even keep food down. Gaviscon didn't even touch it. Was prescribed omperazol and it was an absolute godsend.

Ladylalaboo1 · 02/02/2023 00:10

Yep, had it with all 3 really really bad. With my first it was especially bad and my 3rd as I also suffered with hypremesis so I got prescribed omeprazole - honestly as pp have said - life changing it literally disappeared overnight. Ask your go for a prescription especially if you are having symptoms this early - only going to get worse/ continue!

Quizzed · 02/02/2023 00:13

Yes it was horrendous I never suffered with it before pregnancy or after but nothing helped the burning until I gave birth.

NotABeliever · 02/02/2023 00:14

I had severe acid reflux from the first trimester and GP put me on Omeprazole until the end of the pregnancy. It worked!

NomiMacaroni · 02/02/2023 00:57

Yes, ended up sleeping in a chair for months. The worst symptom for me.

BridieConvert · 02/02/2023 01:22

Oh yeah I was swigging gaviscon from the bottle!

mackthepony · 02/02/2023 01:43

Yeah I had it too

Between that, carpal tunnel and GD it was a right laff

SpringtimeCherries · 02/02/2023 01:44

Yes, I used to drink half a glass of milk before bed and that helped!

Topseyt123 · 02/02/2023 01:55

I had terrible heartburn throughout each of my three pregnancies and it seemed to get a bit worse with each one too.

I lived on Gaviscon. My GP prescribed it for me as prescriptions were free in pregnancy and I took to swigging it straight from the bottle.

At the end of my third pregnancy, when I was facing an emergency caesarean, I was given ranitidine tablets to control it while I was a) laid out on the operating table and b) still immobile from an epidural.

Rainbowshit · 02/02/2023 01:58

Oh god yes. I very nearly got my DH to call an ambulance once as I seriously thought I was having a heart attack

Get those big bottles of gaviscon on prescription and glug them.

Rustyhandlebars · 02/02/2023 02:05

Drank gaviscon from the bottle . Last three pregnancies of four were awful. Apparently old wives take is baby will have lots of hair. My last three babies had thick black hair!
