Fuerteventura

Not an AIBU but posting for traffic.

I am considering booking Fuerteventura for April/May this year but am seeing some mixed reviews. On another thread someone mentions that it is "souless and tacky" - is this overall the case, or just in Corralejo?

We normally hire a car on holiday and we would like to explore the island. The beaches look stunning.

Any thoughts on Fuerteventura please? Would just be DH and I, half board, 10-14 nights, looking to relax and chill but with a few days out here and there.

I go for surfing, all over the canaries. If you're not into surfing or windsurfing or bar crawls there's not much to do. There's beaches, quite a bit of wind, some goats and lots of rocks.

Tenerife and gran canaria are better for non surf or drinking 🥴 people

I used to live there and regularly go back for holidays to see old friends that stayed. I loved in caleta de fuste (also now known as caleta) I think it’s a nice place to holiday with young children. There is always a breeze so it is not usually unbearably hot. If beach / pool holidays are your thing then it’s great. The hotels offer lots of entertainment. I would always suggest hiring a car if you want to explore. The sand dunes in corralejo are worth a visit (although there isn’t much to do there, the landscape is desolate but beautiful) Gran tarajal is worth a visit. Black sand beaches, more authentic and mostly Spanish speaking. Nice tapas restaurants. There is a zoo around 45 mins away, nice for a day out with little ones. There are only really a few bars in caleta - it’s not the place for partying and teens might be bored. But water sports are popular if that’s your thing. You can also get a boat from corralejo to lanzarote for the day.

The capital puerile rijo has some more authentic restaurants and lots of shops. The markets are good… I would suggest it only as a place for families wanting a safe and quiet holiday, and a place for complete escapism - you can have an entire stretch of the sand dunes to yourself😬

In caleta I would recommend the hotel Sara Elba golf

*now also known as costa caleta

I stayed in Caleta de Fuste last summer with DD for 2 weeks but we just like to potter so only left the resort twice
we tend to go for long walks in morning sunbathe swim relax all afternoon and go out to a different restaurant every night
prices were very good
DP doesn’t sunbathe and prefers travelling around so enjoys Lanzarote more as we hire a car and do day trips and get ferry to other islands - we stayed in costa Teguise as it’s quieter than some of the other resorts
I don’t mind Tenerife but again would choose a quieter resort

I love it. My favourite Canary Island. Have stayed in a few places and there have always been plenty of restaurants and bars.

There are some great places to visit all over the island from Chipmunk mountain to nudist beaches and nazi hideouts.

I love it. A lovely underdeveloped relaxed feel to it - you don’t get rows and rows of sun beds at the beach or people dressing to impress. Board shorts and flip flops kind of place. For most beaches you need a car.
there isn’t much sightseeing or shopping, and we don’t really need entertainment and bars, so cannot comment on that. We like going to the beaches in El Cotillo. Corralejo has the touristy part, but also the actual town.
if you like entertainment and bars, excursions and nightlife this probably isn’t the place for you.

We have been there a couple of times when we had 4 children under ten.i cant really remember a lot about it apart from a lot of nudists on the beautiful very quiet sandy beaches. It us very breezy though an easy to burn because of this.
