Fuerteventura

Not an AIBU but posting for traffic.

I am considering booking Fuerteventura for April/May this year but am seeing some mixed reviews. On another thread someone mentions that it is "souless and tacky" - is this overall the case, or just in Corralejo?

We normally hire a car on holiday and we would like to explore the island. The beaches look stunning.

Any thoughts on Fuerteventura please? Would just be DH and I, half board, 10-14 nights, looking to relax and chill but with a few days out here and there.

People seem to go to completely escape everything, or go to drink. Unlike the likes of Tenerife, there doesn't seem to be an in-between. There's more picturesque places to go on a hiking or watersport based holiday.

SheilaFentiman · 01/02/2023 12:13

We loved it

GoodChat · 01/02/2023 12:17

It's perfect if you want a relaxing holiday where you do very little.

Hellzbellz25 · 01/02/2023 12:17

We went to corallejo last summer and we have booked again for July, my ten year old made a massive group of friends so we spent most of the time by the pool and loved it. It was nice for a walk out in the evenings too, we didn't hire a car but spoke to a family that did and they didn't think there was enough to drive out to, the water park is great and the zoo was amazing you can hand feed giraffes it was fantastic

Personally it's my favourite canary Island. First went when ds was a toddler to caleta de fuste which was very suited to young children (safe beach, plenty playparks dotted about). It also has a nice shopping centre with cinema.
Most recently went with ds now a teen to Corralejo. Stayed in a private apartment with 3 pools, bar, music etc. Had a lovely small shopping centre near us with great restaurants, beach and a waterpark 5 min walk away. We hired bikes and went exploring. I love the landscape, feels like you're on the moon or in the desert. There's also plenty golf and watersports if that's your thing.

It’s quite dull. As a PP said, all the unfinished construction sites give it quite a depressing feel. There are lots of nicer places to go on holiday.

I thought it had a more outdoorsy vibe than the other islands

We used to split our time 50/50 beach and exploring, either on foot or 4x4. It suited us but I can see why it might not be to everybody’s taste. I have considered going back but I’m worried overdevelopment would spoil my memories of the place as it was.

I wouldn’t worry about overdevelopment.

It’s windy with beautiful beaches and good for water sports. That’s about it. Wouldn’t return.

Went in April, nearly froze to death. Great hotel, too cold and windy to sunbathe. The bus mentioned in the brochure that went to the nearest town had been discontinued. It was a long walk, or take a taxi knowing that the drivers were exploiting the lack of options. We did a tour one day based around eating local produce, which was the highlight of our week. Maybe if you want kids entertainment and to stay at a hotel good for them it would be better. But it was really cold.

theescapeladder · 01/02/2023 13:48

IMO Corralejo is not much more then a long shopping strip. The beaches nearby are nice though.

Yes, the Fuerteventura resorts can be a bit boring, that's true. Our preferred antidote to this is renting a car so you're not tied down to one place. It's not a massive island so you can visit some hidden gems that way.

We stayed in El Cotillo, which was lovely and quiet, and then moved down south to Morro Jable, which we absolutely loved and we actually cannot wait to go back there. The beach just in front of town is one of my favourites anywhere ever. We've even seen a whale breaching on the horizon 🐳

We went in November and the weather was glorious, no wind. As I have heard, the wind is only an issue in July-September but not sure if that's true.

Oakbeam · 01/02/2023 13:57

It used to be that the north end of the island was almost exclusively Brits and the south almost exclusively Germans. It sounds like it is a bit more diverse now.

sparepantsandtoothbrush · 01/02/2023 14:05

Boring and windy!

Boring and windy!

Surely not as much as Cape Verde!

We went in Feb one year.

It was freezing and windy. The resort we stayed in had a tacky and dated feel. The beaches were ok but not beautiful in my opinion. I wouldn't return.

I just think that there are far nicer places to go on holiday.

KangarooKenny · 01/02/2023 16:27

It’s my favourite island. Costa Calma is my favourite resort, the beach is wonderful.

DogLover22 · 01/02/2023 16:28

I've been once and like others have said I found it pretty boring. Definitely wouldn't rush back.

figtrees · 01/02/2023 18:17

I have been and it is very very windy.

They have nudist beaches on parts of the island, I have some wonderful pictures of me and dh there! 😄

We did see some families walk unknowingly into the nudist beaches and then look absolutely mortified as they tried to drag their kids passed. Just a warning!

SecretPeston · 01/02/2023 16:18

Surely not as much as Cape Verde!

It’s not as windy as Cape Verde no. And there’s lots more to do out and about. It’s, also, not cold in April.

girlfriend44 · 01/02/2023 19:15

I've been to both resorts. Didn't rate Corralejo much. Preferred Caletta Del Fuste.

Prefer gran canaria and tenerife in general.

OnaBegonia · 01/02/2023 19:21

2 weeks is a long time, Lanzarote is definitely better, much more to travel about and see.

I wasn't a huge Lanzarote fan. I found it boring there

MajorCarolDanvers · 01/02/2023 20:03

Avoid Corralejo and it's great.

Ohwelldone · 01/02/2023 20:12

We went to corralejo every year as a child from around 5 until 16, a bit less into adulthood but as often as I can & I have family that moved over too.. We love it, it's definitely my happy place but that might be because it's familiar to me! I just took my two young children last year!
Definitely plenty of different bars & restaurants to visit in corralejo, if you're hiring a car there are some beautiful parts of the island to explore too.. It really depends on what you're looking for from a holiday.

1FootInTheRave · 01/02/2023 20:22

We went a few years ago in the Aug.

Windy. Very windy and cloud cover most mornings which made it feel cold.

It was okay but wouldn't go back.

I didn't particularly like lanzarote either.

girlfriend44 · 01/02/2023 22:06

Lcb123 · 01/02/2023 11:40

We did 1 week all inclusive, mostly stayed at the hotel. Wouldn't go back - didn't seem to be anything to do and the beach was off limit as the sea was so incredibly rough you weren't allowed to swim. I've heard much better things about Gran Canaria

Puerto Rico gran canaria has a lovely beach.

BarbaraofSeville · 01/02/2023 22:31

Surely people aren't really surprised about Fuerteventura being windy? That's literally the name.

It's the sort of place where you'll like it of you like watersports, outdoorsy sort of stuff or if you want to just relax in an AI hotel, otherwise perhaps not.
