Facebook marketplace selling irks!

ThePartyArtist · 31/01/2023 12:28

Bugbears when you're selling things on Facebook marketplace:

  1. When trying to arrange a time they'll collect, why do people say 'I can come after dinner' or 'I can come on my way to school pick up' - really annoys me because how am I supposed to know what time their dinner is - it's meaningless unless they actually say a time?!
  2. And when they come, why do so many of them not ring the doorbell but just knock really softly? It's not a video doorbell so shouldn't be because of fear of surveilance.

I get what you're saying but for 1 I'd respond and say see you at 6 as we're usually finished dinner by then and for 2, maybe they're being respectful if they think a child is asleep or something.

One that gets me is people not marking things as sold.

Whatsshecalled · 31/01/2023 12:38

Slightly separate topic BUT, Facebook marketplace browser irks why do so many people not put dimensions of furniture....or put it in feet/inches (Im 46, metric was well and truely established by the time I was at primary school, how many people actually still use inches....actually quite alot it seems but I'm stilll annoyed by it)

Cigarettesaftersex1 · 31/01/2023 12:42

I listed a few things on there last week, never used it before, and I've had a few messages that say XXX has created a group and it has the item I'm selling shown but then I get no messages from the person. Happened about 5 times now

WhenDovesFly · 31/01/2023 12:52

I’ve had the groups thing a couple of times and then they usually send a separate message to the group.

Hate when you get “Is this still available?” And you say yes and then….nothing more!

Same!

Or, if you've got something on for, say, £30, you get a message that literally just says:

"20"

I deliberately choose to only converse with people that message in full sentences!

This drives me nuts. It's like you moved to Italy 60 years ago but still insist on saying 'hello how are you' to everyone, loudly and slowly.

Lastqueenofscotland2 · 31/01/2023 13:30

It’s the collection only from XXX and then the inevitable first comment being “can you deliver to somewhere a ten hour round trip away”

ShoesIBoughtYouAsAPresent · 31/01/2023 13:31

Totally agree about the quiet door knockers. Even delivery people do that at our house when there is a bell right there. And since they are knocking on the door of an external porch it's impossible to hear the knock from inside.

Agree on the feet/inches thing too (some estate agents do this too). It's not the 1950s.

The most annoying thing I see on our local page though are the obvious stolen/fake branded clothes items, always with a story about why they aren't needed (eg "bought wrong size") - well why wouldn't you return them then 🤔

Whammyyammy · 31/01/2023 13:32

Hate selling on MP. My husband sold immediately of his motorbikes a few years back. Sent more pictures on request to a potential buyer, they agreed a reduced price, and a date.
Seller drives 259 miles, inspects the bike, is happy, then offers £500 less than the already reduced agreed price.
Husband just said never mind and wheeled it back into the garage and came in the house.

They knocked, we ignored, they then messaged agreeing to pay what was agreed, he just said no thanks as he doesn't deal with time wasters. They sat there for an hour, then left.
It was the cocky dad trying to show his son how to barter, it was son who wanted the bike (rare one). A lesson was taught that day

DCINightingale · 31/01/2023 13:33

Yup asking for delivery on a collection only item. Especially when it's something you're giving away for free "can you deliver it tomorrow to me 20 miles away" err fuck off.

Whammyyammy · 31/01/2023 13:40

Read on here a while back, where the poster didn't offer things for free. They put items on for a small amount, say £5 or £10, and when the buyer turned up she just let them have it for free..

It got rid of all the CF that expected delivery etc

That seems a bit shitty...it's a pretty common thing to try and ask for a bit more off; you just say no, it's the agreed price or no sale.

iratepirate · 31/01/2023 13:47

Frankly I’m amazed that any of you have ever had people turn up. I’ve found nothing but time wasters on marketplace.

Really? Surely the conversation before arranging collection is the time to negotiate. If someone is coming to collect something to me the deal is agreed before they arrive, I don't want them making it awkward trying to negotiate more. They're just wasting my time and making me uncomfortable putting me on the spot.

Bit shitty on their part. Price was agreed beforehand and many photos and details sent. My husband turned many other buyers away after the agreed sale.
To then turn and cockily try and get £500 off!!!
He chanced his arm and lost a very rare desirable motorbike.

I just wouldn't be offended by someone asking to have X off - you just say no, surely?

Negotiating is just an expected, common part of sales, especially vehicles - it certainly wouldn't put my nose out of joint. But we're all different!

LindorDoubleChoc · 31/01/2023 17:32

We sold a child's bike for a really low price - I think it was £10. The buyer came to look at it one day and said he liked it and would come back with the money the next day. He did come back and handed the money over - he said he could only find £9.60 cash (it was something like that) and was that OK? twat.

Agreed, but they had already done the bartering and AGREED a REDUCTION in price via text/email

It's a Facebook thing. You don't see that the person filled a form in. Option to put an offer

Knickerthief1 · 31/01/2023 18:16

Not selling but buying. My latest bugbear is going on to look for second hand furniture and seeing a load of items listed as free. When you go in them they are retail sellers who are just not listing the prices - with hundreds of posts. It's so annoying as it's impossible to see the real second hand stuff for sale.

That happens automatically when you click to send a message on marketplace, so even if you press by accident it creates the group.

Similarly with "is this still available?"
It's a Facebook automated response suggestion.

I’d just start responding with nonsense numbers.

Them: 20
You: 37.23
Them:20
You: 41 2/3s

Tabitha1960 · 31/01/2023 18:41

One thing that irks me is people who turn up to collect the item, get to my front door and, instead of using the knocker or doorbell message me on Facebook.

I'm usually either busy on the computer but FB isn't open on my desktop, OR I am nowhere near the computer but in the kitchen or the loo.

They then walk away and message me saying they've visited to collect and I wasn't home.

This has happened three times now!
