Facebook marketplace selling irks!

Bugbears when you're selling things on Facebook marketplace:

  1. When trying to arrange a time they'll collect, why do people say 'I can come after dinner' or 'I can come on my way to school pick up' - really annoys me because how am I supposed to know what time their dinner is - it's meaningless unless they actually say a time?!
  2. And when they come, why do so many of them not ring the doorbell but just knock really softly? It's not a video doorbell so shouldn't be because of fear of surveilance.

Oh, one funny one, I posted a small cupboard for sale, with dimensions, and a woman messaged me to ask if it would 'fit in a car'.

mamabear715 · 31/01/2023 18:47

I gave up. Anything below £50 value goes to charity. Just can't be doing with the awful people.

LindorDoubleChoc · 31/01/2023 18:51

I've bought quite a few things from FB and local groups and wouldn't dream of trying to haggle on the price! That's just tiresome. Just pay what the seller asked, don't patronise them with haggling. FB isn't the Istanbul souk.

Favouritefruits · 31/01/2023 18:52

We had someone come to collect an item and didn’t bring any money! When my DH asked for it they just said they didn’t bring any so my DH pointed them to a cash machine. People are so odd!

Not selling but buying. My latest bugbear is going on to look for second hand furniture and seeing a load of items listed as free. When you go in them they are retail sellers who are just not listing the prices - with hundreds of posts. It's so annoying as it's impossible to see the real second hand stuff for sale.

This!!! We’re looking for a second hand sofa bed and it’s cluttered with crap retail adverts saying either ‘free’ or ‘[ridiculously low price that isn’t real’]

I offered something for £25, buyer messaged asking my address. No discussion of price or reductions etc.

I took the item to the doorway and he held out a tenner and said, "Will you take ten for it?"

The effing cheek!

APurpleSquirrel · 31/01/2023 19:17

Ahhh so many irks!

Asking if an item is available; you respond; never hear from them again.

Listed an item for £5, they offer £4.

Listed a wardrobe with dimensions in both metric & imperial & photos. They arrive to collect in a MINI.

Listed a kids costume; asked if available; yes, when can you collect? Ah well, I'm waiting on Covid test results atm can I let you know in a few days? Ok - few days later, do you still want it? Oh no, my sister has bought one for me now.

Collection only item - can you deliver?

Collection only item - can I send a courier to collect & they'll pay you too? FUCK OFF!

Itsnotalternateuniverses · 31/01/2023 19:28

I sell quite a bit on MP. It does make me laugh when people try and knock the price down when they've arrived. I had one couple agree a price for a chest freezer and then try to get it reduced when they'd arrived. Their philosophy was that they should pay less because they had to travel. I told them no but as they wouldn't stop, I shut the door on them. They agreed to pay but when my partner was helping them load the item on to their car, they refused to pay the full amount. My partner then started dragging the item back into the house. They finally paid in full but were unhappy about it.

As there are so many scammers I now have a secret weapon..... I send them a picture of a cow licking itself. They leave the conversation very quickly. 😅

I also despise those who just reply with a number. Or those telling me that I won't get the price I want.

JRsTornadoOfLove · 31/01/2023 20:06

Just had the opposite problem!

Saw a chair I liked, been on Marketplace for 20 weeks for £30. I asked if it was still available "yes". Would you take £20? No answer all day. Then I looked again last night and all of a sudden it's "sold"- after 5 months of not selling 🙄. Seller didnt even deign to reply to me.

People are odd

To filter out the new sofas (my god so many) just filter to condition nearly new or used good.

Embelline · 31/01/2023 20:13

I read this as in 'irks for sale' and clicked on it to find out what the hell they were 😂I'm an idiot.

Oh my gosh. This will save my sanity!

I actually had one a few weeks back who was 'sending their courier' who didn't show, then got another message to say he was on the way, then an hour later the buyer was coming with the courier. I was very suspicious but it was actually genuine - and she was lovely - they'd been delayed by roadworks!

Offensiveapprently · 31/01/2023 20:32

I put on a sofa a few weeks ago with dimensions in feet and inches and someone asked me what that was in metres and centimetres. My reply was "really".Absolutely lacking in gumption altogether.

WhenDovesFly · 01/02/2023 05:15

If I’m selling a more expensive item I actually write in the description now “no couriers and no PayPal” and it seems to stop the scammers even trying.

Walkacrossthesand · 01/02/2023 05:37

I've sold a few bits on FBMP, I don't give my actual address (as opposed to postcode) until we have an agreed price, and time for pickup.
Most of the people I've sold/given to have been fine, once it's got to collection.

Why would you be silly enough to list the dimensions in feet and inches though? Metric has been the primary means of measurement since the 1970s so few people under 60 think in feet and inches.

WeAreTheHeroes · 01/02/2023 05:57

Agree with pps about things being listed as "free" by retail sellers when they aren't. Even worse are private sellers listing things as "free" then stating, "not free, make me an offer". Just say what you want for the bloody thing!

ReformedWaywardTeen · 01/02/2023 05:59

I hate Marketplace. Buying or selling. People are either rude, ignorant of the fact it's collection only, or demand things for far cheaper. Sellers tend to be as bad for ghosting too.

I'm under sixty and I still measure everything in feet, inches and pints.

slightly off topic but I’m mid 40s and think in feet and inches. Yes we did metric at school but at home everything was imperial so that’s what I was used to.

1ittlegreen · 01/02/2023 06:53

I only realised the other day that I created a few groups when I was looking for a bike for ds.

I had created groups with me and random people in just to ask a question about various bikes on offer. More to my dismay is the group doesn't have any reference to the item they are selling.

When you want to go back and see which item it was you were asking about there is no link at all so you have to scroll through the photos on mp to try and remember which item that person had listed.

I had to leave about 10 different groups I had created in the end.

ThePartyArtist · 01/02/2023 07:29

My biggest ick is when people put items in that are destined for the tip. Want my cracked table that’s covered in dirty and has wood worm that’s £100 please.

I do wonder if these people ever sell anything 🤣

Skyeheather · 01/02/2023 07:40

Tabitha1960 · 31/01/2023 18:41

One thing that irks me is people who turn up to collect the item, get to my front door and, instead of using the knocker or doorbell message me on Facebook.

I'm usually either busy on the computer but FB isn't open on my desktop, OR I am nowhere near the computer but in the kitchen or the loo.

They then walk away and message me saying they've visited to collect and I wasn't home.

This has happened three times now!

This has happened to me a few times too, and I've had two people message me from the car to say that they're here and I've had to go out and deliver the item to them in the car.

The first time somebody asked if they could collect after the school run I assumed they meant after the 3.00 pm pick up - they meant after the 9.00 am drop off, I wasn't at home at 9.15 am and they were not pleased!

I had one man come to collect a big bag of kids clothes his wife had sent him to collect and he insisted on inspecting every single item on the doorstep before paying.
