Vaping indoors

LiftyLift · 29/01/2023 14:17

Last night I went out in a major UK City in to a couple of bars and then a club. In all of the venues, there were people all over the place vaping inside. Some discreetly, some absolutely not discreetly.

I haven’t witnessed this in London or my local town in the south, but I don’t go out out very often.

Is this a thing now? Do people think it’s acceptable?

We successfully banished smoking from indoors for the better, but it seems vaping could creep back in. I personally hate it and don’t think we know the full extent of the damage vaping passively can do.

Of the places I've been, it's been up to the discretion of the management, my local pub allows vaping indoors, but it only really happens on the busy Fri/Sat nights. My work place has it banned, with signs all over.

SliceOfCakeCupOfTea · 29/01/2023 14:24

Some places do allow it and others don't.

It's not exactly a 'thing'

tommika · 29/01/2023 14:27

Vaping indoors is legal, any venue can set their own rules

meegsmalone · 29/01/2023 14:27

YANBU. I sat next to a colleague in my office who was vaping beside me, she did ask me if I minded and I told her that I don’t. However, I don’t speak for everyone, and we should definitely respect all of those around us. Meaning it’s probably best to do it outside 😬

LiftyLift · 29/01/2023 14:29

As I’ve not come across it much and you can’t do it on public transport usually, I assumed it was banned indoors. Interesting that it isn’t!

OP posts:
GloriAAAH · 29/01/2023 14:31

I’ve seen kids doing it on public transport on the sly, like we can’t smell the stench of those things! Adults doing it openly at an airport hotel. A chef at a hotel sitting in a bar happily vaping away. Last year I was in Mexico & Thailand where it’s supposedly banned, but they were selling it everywhere in Mexico. Even Vapers from UK didn’t know it was banned, I enjoyed watching them panic when they found out. It’s like being choked with a bad smelling air freshener.

Rebel2023 · 29/01/2023 14:32

It's up to the venue
There's no identified health risks from passive vaping and there's been plenty of studies

Public Health England has stated that using e-cigarettes is about 95% less harmful to your health than smoking cigarettes. E-cigarettes aren’t completely risk free, but they carry a small fraction of the risk of cigarettes.
There is no evidence of harm to bystanders from exposure to secondhand e-cigarette vapour and any potential risks are likely to be extremely low.
LiftyLift · 29/01/2023 16:02

We don’t fully know the risks though, do we? Even if there wasn’t any risk, I know I don’t want to be smelling it and breathing it in.

There's risks with everything...we can't just ban life in case!

I guess it depends what you mean by fully
For me as an ex smoker and now vaper, it's enough that the NHS, cancer research and PHE support it, and that my doctor and dentist are over the moon
From the research that's been done you're probably at more risk waiting for a bus by a road with exhaust fumes than you are being in a room with someone vaping and nobody worried about waiting for a bus...

Thirtyandflailing · 29/01/2023 16:36

I vape however wouldn’t dream of doing it inside unless at a Shisha bar. I don’t even do it if I’m at a friend or relatives house as I think it’s rude. People should be more considerate as not everyone likes the smell.

GardeningGirlAgain · 29/01/2023 16:55

The smell?

Same could be said for scented candles, zoflora, reed diffusers, wax melts, perfume, cooking garlic

Inside shisa bars are illegal in the UK , authority's turn a blind eye but they are illegal.

Your colleague shouldn't be doing it at all and your workplace ought to ban it it isn't fair on others

I mean... do you drink coffee? Because nicotine is about as harmful to humans as caffeine is. The problem with cigarettes has never really been the nicotine, it's the hundred other chemicals that are carcinogenic. PP said 95% less harmful and that 5% is probably the nicotine, but we don't all shit ourselves over coffee and start trying to ban Costas because "THE RISKS!!"

Grumpybutfunny · 29/01/2023 17:18

It's not illegal and growing in popularity, to be fair the alcohol they are serving is more dangerous. A lot of chains have banned it (weatherspoons even makes them go on the smoking side which is think it wrong) but independents allow it. A lot of bouncers don't want the hassle so ignore it aswell, ours seems to enforce it when it's a family pub and give up after 8pm

It isn't wrong and recent research had found many vapes bought are illegal.

Do t subject others to your habit.

Againstmachine · 29/01/2023 17:59

What I meant was places are free to make their own rules.
Whether you disagree or not.

WithIcePlease · 29/01/2023 18:11

DD says that vaping in clubs is normal.
There are vapes and vapes though. The small disposable ones make little mist and the smell doesn't hang about. I think it's called sub ohming that produces a ton of mist and stronger smell.

Againstmachine · 29/01/2023 18:14

The small disposable ones are terrible for environment even worse as they include a battery.

Sending vapers to stand with smokers is wrong.

The vast majority of vapers are either ex-smokers or smokers who are trying to quit or cut down. From Public Health England's guidance for businesses on creating a vaping policy:

4. Support smokers to stop smoking and stay smokefree

E-cigarettes are used almost exclusively by smokers and ex-smokers and are now the most popular stop-smoking aid in England. To help smokers to stop smoking and stay smokefree, a more enabling approach to vaping may be appropriate to make it an easier choice than smoking. In particular, vapers should not be required to use the same space as smokers, as this could undermine their ability to quit and stay smokefree.

That's from the quick 5 point guide. The full guidance is worth reading if you want to understand the rationale behind not banning vaping in indoor spaces:

I don't want to be smelling and breathing in someone's nasty breath but that's clubs and bars for you.

Most pubs wouldn’t have wax melts, scented candles, reed diffusers etc.
Overly strong perfume is equally rank tbh and, whilst garlic can be awful to some people, you take your chances about smelling it if you go into a place that sells food. I personally don’t want to have to sit next to bubblegum scented vape!
