To be terrified by the rapid progression of Artificial Intelligence?

These children in the 2 attached photos are not real, an AI was asked to generate an image of what Lisa and Maggie Simpson would have looked like had The Simpson’s been a live action 90s sitcom rather than a cartoon. Those children do not exist, an AI has generated those faces within a few seconds based on a prompt of a few words. The quality of the image is even just the right amount of distorted to look like the images have come from a 90s live action sitcom. It seems so real…and yet it’s not. Like a window into an alternate dimension or something.

I find it incredibly unsettling.

😕

What makes it even bloody creepier is that a few months ago this AI software was producing images like this one (attached below) yet within such a short space of time it’s progressed to creating indistinguishable fake faces.

It's scary honestly. Some of the AI stuff on tiktok is mind blowing. Saw a clip recently where an AI mocked up what selfies would have looked like in historical eras - vikings, cavemen etc.

I was stunned.

This website has been around for years . I think it's fascinating

You keep refreshing the page for new faces.

The historical selfies. Cartoon style but batshit to think ai was able to accurately depict environment etc.

The scary part for me is how it’s come out of nowhere. The way progression of AI has seemed to reach an exponential growth point very recently. With the images and that ChatGPT software which is writing academic essays and passing with flying colours, also come out of nowhere.

What freaked me out about these fake Simpson children is that I saw the baby and had a typical reaction that I have when seeing a cute baby, that “Aw, she’s lovely” thought and then I realised she isn’t real and literally doesn’t exist and I can’t get my head around that.

That’s true that website has been around ages but AI being able to create specific hyper realistic photos from a specifc prompt is new. The prompt for the pictures in my OP was “The Simpson’s as a Live Action 90s Sitcom” and those images were whipped up.

There was also one which someone fed all Adeles music into an AI who then wrote their own Adele song. It sounds like her. It could be her song.

That’s given me chills in the worst way. At this rate soon entire photo-realistic TV shows (so indistinguishable from an actual filmed show with a cast of actors) will probably be AI produced. Music artists will be forgotten about in a midst of AI produced music with their style stealing their thunder. It’s terrifying.

You need to get out more OP & ignore this shit. I don't give it a 2nd thought.

Oh go away. It’s a discussion forum and I want to discuss something I find interesting. I’ve got a full-time job and my own business, don’t worry about me.

Are we only allowed threads on here that are worthy of your specific thought? Shall we run all new threads past you?

Reddoubledecker · 29/01/2023 01:56

It’s not the fact it AI can create that that scares me as much as what some people will use the technology for.

That’s one thing that bothers me about MN…seems like only very vanilla basic topics are permitted. Threads like this are dismissed as pointless claptrap yet 1000 threads about “What’s your Chinese takeaway order?” are permitted.

I wonder if we’ll ever get to a point where you can enter your name as an AI prompt and see what it comes out with, you’d have to have at least some public presence though surely.

I assume you’re talking about deepfake porn? If you are evil and want to do that to somebody all you need is a picture of them grabbed from Facebook. Already ruining lives. Horrid.

Hate it too.

We had a presentation at work recently from a team that is working on AI and screens in stores with artifical product ambassadors that will interact with customers.

This is including cameras in the store that watch you interact with product displays and scan your facial expressions to see how you react to them then the AI thing will interact with you.

Horrible. What is wrong with employing real people who are passionate about products! I would activitely avoid a store with this technology.

oakleaffy · 29/01/2023 02:07

There is something very creepy about the toddler on the left's face.
Something really not ''Right'' about the expression, more so than the one on the right.
The horse 'A.I' created ones are really off the scale weird.

God it’s horrible. I was in the Vodafone shop earlier upgrading my contract, I was in there a while due to technical issues with my phone but the staff were great and friendly and chatty. I can’t imagine just talking to a screen.

Agreed. I’ve had kids etc myself, see a lot of babies in my life and naturally coo whenever I see a baby, it’s just an instinct for me as quite a maternal personality. Even a baby on the telly will catch my attention as cute. This baby, I thought “Ah, adorable” initially almost from instinct then the more I looked the more unsettling it became.

On the other hand, there is an AI initiative running at the moment that checks mammograms for tumours. Early results indicate it is significantly better at spotting very early stage breast cancer than an experienced radiographer.

Given the shortage currently in skilled radiographers, I'd say that's a pretty useful bit of science.

They did an experiment with AI recently - self learning. Not surprisingly it was racist and sexist. Crap in crap out...
