I've been poorly with the flu for about a week (tested in hospital so I know it's the flu). I was finally starting to feel slightly better everyday and then Thursday night I couldn't sleep as I had an awful headache. Woke up with it again yesterday and through the day it slowly developed in to a fever, chills, and awful pain around my face. Can't bite as my teeth are so sore, pain radiates right around my eye, through my ear and all down my jaw right to my neck.
I've tried paracetamol and it's not touching it. I've tried a nasal rinse even though my nose doesn't actually feel too badly blocked, one stuff came out but it didn't help. One side of my face is just throbbing so intensely and is hot to touch. I can't sleep and I feel right back to square one with the fever and chills!

From what I've read online there's no point contacting a medical professional as they won't give you anything for a sinus infection anyway. So has anyone had this and found something that helps relieve some of the pain pretty quickly? Not sure how much longer I can cope with the pain Sad

The two things that help me when mine are bad are a long soak in a hot bath (the steam seems to help clear the sinuses) and Boots own brand congestion relief tablets. Oh, and surgery - I only get it on one side now.

If your snot is green or yellow, your sinuses might be infected and you might benefit from antibiotics, so don't rule out getting an appointment if you can, even if it's over the phone.

Sailawaygirl · 27/01/2023 22:38

Hi. I have chronic sinus issues. My best tips are
Lots of fluids
Strangely sometime having a string coffee helps
Hot showers
Face massage
How water bottle or warm thing on face or head
Steam inhalation
Try as many different over counter remedies. The sprays dont works so well for me now. But olbus oil always seems to help

Also I have had antibiotics once for it and a few times gp has prescribed a steroid spray. It sounds like you have it quiet bad so if it doesn't get better in next few days it's worth talking to Dr's.

justdone3 · 27/01/2023 22:41

Thanks both, I will try and get in a hot bath now and see if the steam helps.

@LakieLady yes my snot changed to a very thick dark green type stuff last night just before the pain started to get so intense. I didn't realise they would give antibiotics so I'll try and get an appt if the pain is still so bad tomorrow.

ibuprofen usually works better for sinuses than paracetamol.

Hot damp flannel over your face too

justdone3 · 27/01/2023 22:47

@trythisforsize unfortunately I can't take ibuprofen due to having a current asthma flare up but I have got a hot flannel on my face at the moment so hopefully that will help!

When this happened to me it was a sinus infection and I needed antibiotics to clear it. A heated eye mask is really soothing, nicer than a hot flannel.

user1471547789 · 27/01/2023 22:53

I had this just after Christmas, I really feel for you, the headache was horrendous.

I was able to get antibiotics from the Dr in the end which shifted it, but managed a little relief from holding an ice pack over my eye, keeping the room dark and keeping my eye closed as much as possible. Steaming and congestion relief stuff helped a little too but really it was the antibiotics which did the job.

I hope you're feeling better soon.

QueSyrahSyrah · 27/01/2023 22:56

DH had this over Christmas (he get sinus issues often) and GP prescribed him antibiotics. If you have to wait for an appointment try Sinutab in the meantime, but be careful as you can only take them for 2 or 3 days in a row.

Hope you feel better soon, sinus pain is the worst x

20viona · 27/01/2023 22:57

I get sinus infections a fair bit and Iv found that the Sudafed congestion and headache tablets really work if you take them regularly.

Robinonaspade · 27/01/2023 22:57

Antibiotics, steaming and sterimar nasal congestion spray alongside strong ibuprofen (cuprofen I think they were called) helped. It took me two courses of antibiotics to get rid of mine though.

Hope you are feeling better soon.

justdone3 · 27/01/2023 23:00

Thanks everyone. I've just called 111 as the pain is so bad I can't lie down, they are getting a Gp to call within 2 hours (although I'm expecting it will probably be longer). Hoping they can give me some antibiotics as I think with the fever and the pain it's probably an infection

I have chronic sinusitis and have been referred to a consultant.
He recommended rinsing regularly with a Netipot using boiled water with a little salt and bicarbonate of soda and sinus massage.

I wish you much relief soon, it really is awful.

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 27/01/2023 23:02

You need to steam with a steam mug and olbas oil 3x a day for 6 weeks. Works a treat but you have to realise it's not a quick fix.

babynoname22 · 27/01/2023 23:07

I feel your pain in only just getting sort of over an awful sinus infection

My tips would be

  • rest
  • fluid
  • blue Sudafed tablets
  • ibuprofen 4/6 hourly
  • steam inhalation with crystal menthol tablets in

You have my sympathy it's awful

babynoname22 · 27/01/2023 23:08

Oh I've had 5 days of antibiotics and it hasn't really helped 😩

chronictonic · 27/01/2023 23:13

Himalayan Salt Pipe works for some people.
I think it's good for some Asthma sufferers too..

LittleStar22 · 27/01/2023 23:35

I echo what others have suggested… but instead of a hot flannel (which goes cold too quickly!) try a hot water bottle.
It can offer some relief.

justdone3 · 27/01/2023 23:45

Just to update I've just had a phone call with the DR. He wants me seen by a OOh Gp first thing in the morning but has asked if the pain isn't better in the next hour or so I need to go to a&e. He seemed concerned that the infection could be a complication of the other illnesses/medication I've been on for the past week. Hoping I can wait until the morning and they will hopefully give me some antibiotics

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/01/2023 11:44

How's things now?

Thanks for checking in. I saw the dr today and they've prescribed antibiotics and a steroid nasal spray. He said it could take up to 3 weeks for the pain to subside but I'm hoping it may be sooner than that! I've been alternating between a hot flannel and a cold compress on my face which does seem to help a little

MrsPelligrinoPetrichor · 28/01/2023 17:57

Oh you poor thing. Honestly, I really would get yourself a steam mug and start steaming alongside the flannels.

Jifmicroliquid · 28/01/2023 18:02

I had this not long ago and it was awful. Get some Sudafed max Sinus tablets, take them every 4 hours. Keep blowing your nose as much as possible to get the gunk out. The pain when I woke up in the mornings was indescribable. It felt like my skull was about to explode.

justdone3 · 28/01/2023 18:05

@Jifmicroliquid I've been taking them religiously today, they do seem to be helping with the pain but I definitely know when I'm due more as the pain becomes unbearable.

Who knew sinuses could cause so much trouble?!

OP posts:
needanivoftea · 28/01/2023 18:12

Try Sinutab, it's the only thing that touches my sinus headaches, Sudafed doesn't work for me. Hope you feel better soon

SatInMySpottyOnesie · 28/01/2023 18:30

I really do feel for you. I have chronic and very painful sinus issues regularly. The pain is ridiculous; I’ve been to the dentist and asked to have my teeth taken out before now it was that bad 🥺…(he didn’t - X ray showed what was causing the problem )

I have tried EVERYTHING 😩
Paramol - it is OTT but you have to ask the pharmacist for it; for pain

These methods to relieve pressure really help; I use them all the time:

I really hope you feel better soon - it’s miserable 🥺🤗
