To insure my lion? Photo

I've name changed
My grand dad got this lion a long long time ago. I am thirty and I used to sit on it when I was a child. When he died 15 years ago, I got this lion. It is a really loved and treasured trinket. He is made from ebony. My nanny always tells me that it is very valuable. She is now coming to the end of her life and I am feeling devastated about the end of those links we have 🥹🥹
I've got a few trinkets from her over the years and I suppose insurance would defeat the purpose because I couldn't replace it.

My husband said that these things are precious for so many reasons but that people often miss them off their insurance and then they are very sad when they can't get something to replace it, especially if it was expensive or rare to replace in the first place. He said this could be genuinely very valuable and best to insure? I am shy to ask the insurer as know nothing about these type of things. Insurance due for renewal and I want to add some purchases we have made in the last few months to it.

Thank you

No idea where I would get a replacement lion and if it would be replaceable..

*will not respond to comments that I'm being unreasonable to have such a funny lion 🦁 or that I tricked you here with something that sounds like a real pet

Can we see him lion down ?

SantaBakula · 27/01/2023 18:38

Aww he is great .
I agree with pp , take him to a auction house not a antique shop.
But much more importantly ask your nan to tell uou all about its history when and where it was bought . Any photos of your relatives sat on or playing with it.

I have a painting done by my gp, it's taken me 10 years off and on to gather nfo about it despite knowing when it was painted ( wrote on the back )
But i now know where it was painted and why. All i newd to do now is find somewhere very good to have it cleaned ☹️

Dont ket its history die with your nana.

I don't think insurance would really solve anything for you. You just sound upset about the loss of grandparents.

The lion has a lot of sentimental value. You can't really insure against that. If it gets lost or broken, that's kind of it really. Money or a replacement (if you could even get one) isn't really going to do any good, is it?

isthismylifenow · 27/01/2023 18:40

I'll just also add in that he isn't really replaceable in a sentimental sense, due to the history.

But it is replaceable, as they are quite often see around my parts (which happens to be where he is probably from). We can get a few friends for him, I have something similar although it's a crocodile. No one in them family has ever sat on croc though. He's caused a few injuries though. Not by chomping anyone, just that he has a bloody great tail which gets in the way a bit.

The elephant version of these are quite popular too. I think he should have an elephant friend.

magicthree · 27/01/2023 18:43

I just wanted to say that whether or not it turns out to be valuable I think it is lovely, and how wonderful that it holds so many memories for you.

Pics of the croc please! Though definitely not next to a spider if you are somewhere where they can kill you!

watcherintherye · 27/01/2023 18:44

maybe I should go and visit an antique shop. We do have a lot of them here in Margate

Whatever you do, don’t take it to an antique dealer to get it valued! (No offence, any antique dealers!) Take it to an auction house valuation day, where it will be valued by impartial experts.

I'll snap a pic (see what I did there) tomorrow.

He lives outside, and I dare say he's got a fair few spider friends, so I'll ask him to pose in the daylight.

Laiste · 27/01/2023 19:02

The mane thing is, just paws for a while, otherwise you'll get a roar deal Grin

Catnary · 27/01/2023 19:05

You need to cub your enthusiasm for buying insurance. Take pride in owning him though.

I thought I'd do a bit of Googling for antique ebony lion and found this beaut! 😉The product of the union between a hippo and a lion 😂

From my experience this is perfectly safe, they aren’t going to force you to sell. Antique dealing is usually not a very lucrative option, most do it because they enjoy dealing with nice things. You can preface the conversation by declaring that you don’t want to sell.

I’ve found having a conversation with someone is the best way of understanding something.

Auction houses don’t hold “free” valuations for no reason, they do it to get goods to sell. When you agree they take 20% seller premium and 20% off the buyer.

There have been amazing scandals with auction house as well as problems with dodgy dealers but there is no universal truth.

It’s a matter of being careful and doing your own research and the advice of any expert can help. Think of the process as like selling a house, car or anything valuable.

@ebonylion ohh no , how did you escape !
I have a big spider in my house fortunately I like spiders but one day I am sure I will come home from work and find him sat on the sofa with his eight feet up helping himself to my pringles

Dragonsandcats · 28/01/2023 13:11

really want to see a picture of the spider on the lion now!

MorrisZapp · 28/01/2023 13:14

Who doesn't love a lion thread? Tins of Tate and Lyle golden syrup feature a dead lion and flies, it's mental if you think about it. My other weird syrup fact is that Mr Tate and Mr Lyle never met each other. Mr Tate collected paintings though, hence his well known galleries.

Two sugars for me please 🦁

MistyRock · 29/01/2023 07:15

The syrup just says Lyle no Tate.

MistyRock · 29/01/2023 07:24

Ah, Tate and Lyle do the sugar and Lyle is just the syrup.

FeinCuroxiVooz · 29/01/2023 07:27

in the event of a devastating fire that destroyed all your possessions, you would have a lump sum of contents insurance and it would be entirely up to you whether to spend any of that on a replacement ebony lion, you just need to make sure you are happy with the total insurance limit.
it's trickier for circumstances where not everything is destroyed. if you end up having to list what was lost, you can't just assert that you had an ebony lion worth £20,000. you would need to have had it professionally valued. I have a necklace that is worth £500 ish and I have a valuation for insurance purposes which certifies this. obviously in the event if a total loss fire the certificate would be lost too but the valuers will have a record

dew141 · 29/01/2023 07:28

I was burgled at Christmas (and the bastards took my Christmas presents) and I wished I'd done what you're doing. The insurance company have been great but I had no proof of ownership for my inherited jewellery although they've accepted my claim.

As others have said, your insurance company won't value things for you. I have to specify my items over £2,000 although that doesn't mean it has to be professionally valued. As a minimum I wished I'd taken photos (with a tape measure next to larger items).

Plenty of people do insurance valuations although there's usually a small charge. Not really relevant in your case but you have to insure the replacement cost on a new for old policy. We've been caught out on my husband's watch as although we'd upped the valued amount, it was still a significant sum short.

I think your lion is very attractive so good to get it insured...

SantaBakula · 29/01/2023 14:11

Has @ebonylion been eaten by he/r lion spider ?
