To insure my lion? Photo

I've name changed
My grand dad got this lion a long long time ago. I am thirty and I used to sit on it when I was a child. When he died 15 years ago, I got this lion. It is a really loved and treasured trinket. He is made from ebony. My nanny always tells me that it is very valuable. She is now coming to the end of her life and I am feeling devastated about the end of those links we have 🥹🥹
I've got a few trinkets from her over the years and I suppose insurance would defeat the purpose because I couldn't replace it.

My husband said that these things are precious for so many reasons but that people often miss them off their insurance and then they are very sad when they can't get something to replace it, especially if it was expensive or rare to replace in the first place. He said this could be genuinely very valuable and best to insure? I am shy to ask the insurer as know nothing about these type of things. Insurance due for renewal and I want to add some purchases we have made in the last few months to it.

Thank you

No idea where I would get a replacement lion and if it would be replaceable..

*will not respond to comments that I'm being unreasonable to have such a funny lion 🦁 or that I tricked you here with something that sounds like a real pet

Also, it is a lovely lion. How big is it? It must be the angle but it only looks a couple of inches high in that pic!

Agreed. Was waiting for a OP to disclose that she's from a family of borrowers.

Most auction houses have valuation days. I did this with a few of my mums precious items. All free.

😆😆 I don't play golf and the garage has spiders in it!

Please put a standard size spider next to the lion and post another picture to give a sense of scale.

I think you realise yourself that insurance is not really the issue here.

You’d love that lion if it was worth 50p.

If you lost or broke it, you would not be comforted by the money and a replacement would not compensate for the loss of the original.

The answer is this- get the lion valued and if it is worth more than about £2000 (very, very unlikely), insure it because it is an asset that, at some point in the future (maybe very distant), someone in your family will want or need to turn into cash.

If it’s worth less than 2k any loss/damage would probably fall within your policy excess.

However the main thing you need to do is look after it (I also like the idea of documenting its history). You probably shouldn’t let kids sit on it any more.

PlaitBilledDuckyPuss · 27/01/2023 17:01

What is your lion called, OP?

TheFlis12345 · 27/01/2023 17:02

Nothing to contribute other than to say I love your Lion, he’s gorgeous!

I hope it's Roar-y

JamMakingWannaBe · 27/01/2023 17:03

I vote Cadbury creme egg for visual size comparison. Or a KitKat.

Catnary · 27/01/2023 17:03

Can you post a pic of it being ridden by a child, with the face obscured? The child’s face, that is.

This is right. I think OP that if anything happened to your lion, buying a replacement wouldn't work because that wouldn't be the same lion anymore or have the same links to your family. So if you insure it, do it for the reasons this poster gives.

There are some auctioneers who might come to your house to look at it. If i was worried about something happening to my lion I probably wouldn't want to be traipsing it around outside.

BarbaraWoodlouse · 27/01/2023 17:12

WTF is a “standard size” spider?! Now you’ll need a trigger warning on this thread OP for people who are scared of lions spiders.

LaurieFairyCake · 27/01/2023 17:12

I also love your 🦁

He's gorgeous

WestOfWestminster · 27/01/2023 17:13

Haha sorry my 'Specific' comment was a reply to the person who wanted you to put a golf ball next to it and take a photo!!

PegasusReturns · 27/01/2023 17:16

Absolutely dying at the posters claiming OPs lion is anything like th weird Etsy link.

OP it could be worth £100 or £10000 you need to get it valued.

HornungTheHelpful · 27/01/2023 17:20

He’s lovely. A few years back my parents took a violin made by a distant ancestor (turn of the 19th century) to be valued for insurance and while it was only worth about £3k, the valuers were excited because it was unusual - as very few about - but also because of the family connection. They told my parents quite a lot about it and the ancestor, who was a hobbyist maker but a “known” one. It was really nice to know and I bet knowing more about your lovely guy will only make you like him more, whatever his monetary value.

ShimmeringShirts · 27/01/2023 17:21

@PegasusReturns you may want to call for an ambulance then, or perhaps see a doc about some meds.

Helenahandkart · 27/01/2023 17:27

Definitely get a proper valuation. Just because there are similar ones that aren’t worth much doesn’t mean that yours isn’t valuable.

I have a silver pepper pot that’s worth £2000. There are loads of copies worth about £100, but mine is the real deal.

LilLilLi · 27/01/2023 17:37

Can you please place a real lion next to it for scale?

DisforDarkChocolate · 27/01/2023 17:37

He's a very handsome chap. Take lots of pictures and then get him valued.

jollygoose · 27/01/2023 17:37

The lion is gorgeous I can well believe it to be valuable. It appears to be a very tactile object please let us know the value if you find out.
