to keep dirty laundry in the bathroom

DH wants the basket in the bathroom, as that's where he takes his clothes off primarily. However the bathroom is tiny and I keep tripping over it. He thinks laundry doesn't belong in the bedroom and is better in the bathroom.

Is HE being unreasonable? Please vote so I can show him the poll results lol.

Bathroom here too, it makes more sense as that's where clothes are more likely to be removed.

Although you lost any merit to your argument when you complained your bathroom was tiny and yet that is your laundry basket?! Grin The basket is tne problem, it is excessively big and any normal sized basket would likely fit with ease in your not at all tiny bathroom.

Orcubed · 27/01/2023 07:05

Ours is in the bathroom as that’s where we get undressed and also where our washing machine is. Teenagers used to have them in their rooms so I could go in and grab it to put a wash on but they prefer to use the floor so I now take the “put it in the bathroom or it doesn’t get washed” approach

whataboutsecondbreakfast · 27/01/2023 07:11

Dirty clothes in the bedroom is a bit gross - they smell even if they're not filthy.

Ours lives in the cupboard under the stairs!
No room in the bathroom or the upstairs hallway.

yikesanotherbooboo · 27/01/2023 07:34

We have always kept the laundry basket on the landing so that everyone can use it and I can access it to get a load out when I wish. Adult DS who lives with us and has a dirty job that generates a lot of washing has one in his bedroom now rather than using the carpet as a repository for dirty clothes.

NewUserName2023 · 27/01/2023 07:40

Hang one of those big reusable supermarket bags on the back of the bathroom door. No floorspace needed. Carry it downstairs when ful, or daily. Job sorted.

SmileWithADimple · 27/01/2023 07:44

Loving the 10 year cycle for the butter @Onnabugeisha. This is definitely your solution OP.

PS Our laundry basket is in the bathroom

BogRollBOGOF · 27/01/2023 07:55

I'd rather have it in the bedroom than the bathroom due to the higher humidity in the bathroom.

Any particularly muddy/ noxious sports gear is removed by the washing machine for fast tracked action.

MooFroo · 27/01/2023 07:57

Landing or we put it in the bath in bags - we have separate shower so don’t use the bath much

TheNoodlesIncident · 27/01/2023 07:58

Do you actually need your laundry basket to be that big? Perhaps you could downsize it for a corner one that fits your bathroom if there's only the two of you?

We have two baskets for dirty laundry, one in DS's bedroom and one in DH's and mine. We get dressed and undressed in our rooms mostly so this works for us, plus our clothes are worn and sometimes a tad muddy from walks but they're not offensive to the nose (wondering how it is unhygienic to have dirty clothes in a bedroom? a) They are in a closed basket and b) we haven't been wading through sewers...)

To my mind "unhygienic" is not washing your hands before food prep or not washing them after using the loo. I wouldn't class keeping used garments in a container in a bedroom to be the same.

Hatcat · 27/01/2023 08:22

Another learning curve in MN world. Why is it unhygienic in either place? Unless you work in a hospital or virus research lab why does it matter?

Everyone has a laundry basket or bag in their bedrooms here. They get undressed in their rooms. Clothes that have another wear in them go on a chair. I think if the basket was in the bathroom they would put everything in for a wash rather than carry it back to their rooms for another wear.

KangarooKenny · 27/01/2023 08:23

Not in the bedroom.

FuzzyPuffling · 27/01/2023 08:29

That's not a laundry basket... it's a whole extra room.

Get two smaller ones, one for the bathroom, one for the bedroom.

Aprilx · 27/01/2023 08:32

I don’t have a view on bedroom or bathroom, I would just want it where there is room and it is somewhat unobtrusive.

CanStopWillStop · 27/01/2023 00:42

For anyone who's invested, this is the laundry basket in question. It's a bit of a beast, hence why it can't go many places without getting in the way.

OMG well sourcing a smaller laundry basket will surely half solve the problem.

Whataretheodds · 27/01/2023 08:39

Dirty clothes in the bedroom is a bit gross - they smell even if they're not filthy.

How dirty are these clothes?! Or how long are you storing them for?!

Backtoreality1 · 27/01/2023 08:40

Put it next to the washing machine. Drop the clothes outside the bedroom door when you go to bed and then carry them down in the morning.

Nannyfannybanny · 27/01/2023 08:47

Was wondering why folk were talking about smells and damp, now I've seen the laundry hampers! I have 2 Lloyd loom ones, they have hinged lids, got them from e bay for pennies, painted them, and new covering on the cushion. My 4 kids, when they were at home,wet/muddy stuff went straight into the washing machine.

Januarysickandtired · 27/01/2023 09:07

Bathroom for me. I wouldn't want the smells of dirty washing in the bedroom.

WeightoftheWorld · 26/01/2023 23:29

Do you only have one? We have loads of different ones...6 in total in fact. But I was thinking about this the other day actually and I think we could cut this down to 5 or even 4. But then they'd probably be even mofe overflowing than some of them regularly are already... 3 are in our bedroom, 1 in DC1's bedroom, 2 in the spare bedroom. Our bathroom is a tiny box so there's physically no space for even one in there. My DP's have theirs in their utility room on top of the washing machine which is great. If only we had a utility room!

6! Does everyone have their own?

Coxspurplepippin · 27/01/2023 09:09

Bathroom, but there's enough room.

Redbushteaforme · 27/01/2023 09:42

I would normally say that it should be in the bathroom but as this one has a lid, I wouldn't mind having it in the bedroom if necessary, Re getting a smaller one, I have two laundry sorting baskets like this (both in bathrooms) and would hate to have to get rid of them. It is great to have the laundry ready sorted and not to have to do too much delving through manky washing to divide things up for white or dark loads.

WeightoftheWorld · 27/01/2023 09:47

Bagatella · 27/01/2023 09:09

6! Does everyone have their own?

Sort of! Kids have one each of their own, but only for things that can be tumble dried, which is most of their stuff. One for towels and bedding. One for DH's scrubs. Then one for me and DH's stuff that can go in the dryer. Then one for everybody's stuff that can't go in the dryer. 6! But I could mix all the dryer-able stuff into one really.

jtaeapa · 27/01/2023 09:52

If he wants the laundry in the bathroom, he needs to either:

-wall mount / door mount so it isn’t a tripping hazard

-get a smaller basket

-use the floor to make a pile in a corner so there’s no tripping hazard.

-think how he could make it work some other way
