to keep dirty laundry in the bathroom

DH wants the basket in the bathroom, as that's where he takes his clothes off primarily. However the bathroom is tiny and I keep tripping over it. He thinks laundry doesn't belong in the bedroom and is better in the bathroom.

Is HE being unreasonable? Please vote so I can show him the poll results lol.

Are you sure there is no space for it on the landing? Or a spare bedroom/box room? A fair compromise would be to acknowledge your objection to the bathroom is just as valid as his objection to the bedroom and carry the dirty clothes from the bathroom to the hamper after a shower.

If there isn’t, then it reminds me of the butter wars. My DH strongly objects to butter in the fridge, I strongly object to butter on the counter. Every ten years we switch the butter from fridge to counter and back again. He got to go first as he is 8yrs older and I’m likely to have it my way for at least ten years after he goes.

Sorry, I don't mean to be rude but omg is this your biggest problem?

No of course not, but who wants to hear about crippling debt or a dead cat at this time of the night?

@CanStopWillStop I know I shouldn't have but I literally laughed out loud at that comment! Sorry for your cat. And your debt. x

For anyone who's invested, this is the laundry basket in question. It's a bit of a beast, hence why it can't go many places without getting in the way.

Laundry baskets in everyone’s room . Think the bathroom is quite unhygienic.

Yes, you did mean to be rude, hopefully you enjoyed the OP’s response….

…and you don’t actually have the first clue how discussion forums work, do you…….?

Yes that’s a beast alright. Would downsizing be an option?

pizzaHeart · 27/01/2023 01:03

I’m with your DH - landing or bathroom but never bedroom. We have small bathroom and small basket, overflow goes into the pile on the landing. I know it’s not ideal, my only solution is to wash often, it suits me well as there is no space for drying either so little and often is the way.

ANUsernamgh · 27/01/2023 01:07

Bathroom is the one place a laundry basket shouldn't be in my opinion. Far too humid. If clothes don't smell when they go into a laundry basket they'll soon start to if they're kept somewhere so humid.

I've always kept mine in my bedroom, never had an issue with smells, but if you do just get one with a lid and keep it closed (also don't put anything straight into the laundry bin damp, hang it somewhere to dry first)

afty · 27/01/2023 01:10

Ours is in the bedroom, our bathroom is too small for the basket.

If your DH is insistent on having a laundry container in the bathroom, could you get one of those drawstring laundry bags and hang it on a hook on the back of the door? Saves you tripping over it!

LadyJ2023 · 27/01/2023 01:13

Bathroom no matter how small. Ours is tiny but hey we make do. Bedroom nooooo way

LadyJ2023 · 27/01/2023 01:14

Crikey have you a large family. I have 6 and no basket that big jeepers creepers you need to down size lol

saltinesandcoffeecups · 27/01/2023 01:18

You are both over complicating this…. Get a small basket for the bathroom and when it’s full empty it into the larger one or wash it.

But as you asked for a vote vs. logic…laundry basket in the place where you strip down. So it sounds like that is in the bathroom.

Tinkerbyebye · 27/01/2023 01:27

Mines on the landing

swissrollisntswiss · 27/01/2023 01:38

Get a smaller one? We just have a slim one in the bathroom but then our washing machine is too. We used to have a larger one in the bedroom too but it was also in the way so moved to just the small one. It motivates us to keep on top of the laundry too

Theoldwoman · 27/01/2023 02:33

We keep ours in the bathroom as that’s where we all get undressed to take a shower before bed or in the morning.

Theoldwoman · 27/01/2023 02:35

Oh and I empty ours each morning when I do a wash.

I think the exact opposite. Unhygienic to keep dirty clothes in bedrooms.
Even my young adult kids have never had baskets in their rooms and in turn, have never had dirty clothes in there.

ricepuddin · 27/01/2023 04:30

It's a beast alright! Smaller hanging one for the bathroom? They do small hanging laundry bags (as opposed to baskets) too. Those take up even less space

MRex · 27/01/2023 06:22

Smaller one for the bathroom so that it fits the space, then migrate down to the machine and keep your beast down there for the colour way not going on / overflow.

Bathroom is better to keep sweaty smells out of the bedroom. It shouldn't be a wet room or your house will get damp as the wet creeps out, open a window or use an extractor to get rid of steam within 5 min while you dry off. (Also how long are you keeping clothes in the basket for them to start smelling from being wet? Just wash the damn clothes already!)

FabFitFifties · 27/01/2023 06:46

Bathroom is normal for me. Ours is small though, and we wash about 4-5 times a week. Why do you need such a monster basket?

Nannyfannybanny · 27/01/2023 06:56

Bathroom, because surely that's where you undress. No room in our bedroom. We don't have a landing... open plan bungalow. Just the 2 of us now. I bought a lovely original Lloyd loom, corner one. Fan goes on with bath or shower, the clothes don't get damn or smell.

demotedreally · 27/01/2023 07:00

Great thread! My thoughts are

  1. You need a much smaller basket
  2. Bathrooms shouldn't be perpetually steamy, open a window People!
  3. Sorry about your cat
