To think milk thistle is magic?

santaspeasants · 26/01/2023 10:58

I gave up nightly alcohol at the end of Dec.
I've had a bottle of wine on two occasions over two weekends since. So two in the month.
Started milk thistle and b vitamins and upped my water intake and feel like a new woman entirely.
So much energy , form so much better, feel a bit lighter and maybe a Bit flatter .
Could it be that milk thistle really is magic ?

hi Op interested to know what it does, not heard much about it before?

steff13 · 26/01/2023 10:59

I would think it's the b vitamins.

FfeminyddCymraeg · 26/01/2023 11:00

I take it but like my wine. I would say the lack of alcohol is probably the reason behind how you’re feeling, more than the milk thistle but take the wins regardless!

FourTeaFallOut · 26/01/2023 11:00

I think not drinking alcohol every night might be more magic than the milk thistle.

HappyHealthy23 · 26/01/2023 11:01

Giving up daily alcohol is fairly magic - ir at least has a very transformative effect on health. B vitamins also help a lot as mist heavy alcohol users are depleted in those. Not sure why you're attributing it to the milk thistle, tbh, but glad you're feeling so much better anyway.

SoupDragon · 26/01/2023 11:01

Don't you think that giving up drinking alcohol every day in conjunction with all the other things is more likely to be the reason rather than just "magic" milk thistle?

Thelnebriati · 26/01/2023 11:02

Alcohol depletes vitamin B, so it could also be that you stopped drinking and started supplementing.
The active ingredient in milk thistle are anti oxidants, I get those by eating the white pith on orange peel.

Ponoka7 · 26/01/2023 11:03

It's the lack of alcohol, water and vitamins, but mainly the alcohol. If you read threads about what people have found after cutting down on drinking, increased energy is the most common thing mentioned. Then patience. Hangovers aren't the only after effects of drinking.

Ponoka7 · 26/01/2023 11:04

Just to add it sounds like you are still in denial re excess alcohol consumption side effects.

Catspyjamas17 · 26/01/2023 11:25

It's definitely reducing alcohol which would have the main effect though vitamins can help. Drinking every night would make me feel rubbish. Keeping to the recommended limits though I notice no health difference from not drinking at all.

Milk thistle is amazing. There is a lot of fake milk thistle out there so I only use Jarrow brand. Whenever I read about people on here or their kids waking up at 2am I want to recommend it to them, but it's still considered too "woo".

ethermint · 26/01/2023 12:38

@Unicorn2022 does it prevent night waking?

PAFMO · 26/01/2023 12:43

Milk thistle will be helping your liver get back into shape, yes.
But it's not drinking plus the B vits giving you the energy.

NeverDropYourMooncup · 26/01/2023 12:45

Not knocking back the booze every night, sleeping properly, not being dehydrated or hungover, not having the extra calories and replacing the nutrients it was stealing from you is the magic, not the pill.

DesertRose64 · 26/01/2023 12:48

Op, it’s not even been 4 weeks let alone a month. Yet you’ve had two bottles of wine. It still seems quite a bit in a short space of time.

It's a huge effort for someone who was drink every single day. Don't diminish the achievement. It's not big or clever.

neither are you.

santaspeasants · 26/01/2023 12:56

Yes you're all probably correct but I feel
So
Much less swollen in my middle area.
For the pp who said that two bottles of wine in the month is a lot.... not in my world it wasn't . I could have put that away in one sitting several nights a week when my life fell apart, initially .
I used it completely as an escape, to bury everything but changed it all around last month so I'm happy with my little success.

It's not a small success. Look at how much better you are feeling and you made that happen. Keep taking the milk thistle but make sure you give yourself more credit.

As someone who has entirely given up alcohol, I'd imagine cutting the nightly drinks will have helped massively. It would have improved the quality of your sleep too, meaning you'll feel more refreshed.

Upping your water intake will also clear your mind as (and I might be wrong, I was literally taught this in school) it's something like 2% dehydration - 20% lack of concentration. It might not be exactly that but dehydration significantly reduces your concentration, thought clarity etc. By the time you feel thirsty it means you're already dehydrated, so by drinking more water you'll be warding off any symptoms of dehydration. Alcohol also dehydrates you so as you've cut your consumption significantly, you're improving your hydration with both barrels!

The vitamin B will be improving your energy levels on top of everything else.

I can't comment on the Milk Thistle but if I'm honest, I'd imagine the other work you're doing might be having the more noticeable impact on your health as I experienced the same "new woman" feeling after I completely cut my alcohol intake (I was drinking large amounts every night before that).

You should be really, really proud of yourself for cutting your alcohol consumption and making other changes to improve your lifestyle. The benefits you're feeling physically and mentally will be mirrored internally - your liver will be healing etc. You've done brilliantly and I'm glad you're able to reap the rewards of your new lifestyle.

stayathomegardener · 26/01/2023 13:46

@Unicorn2022 tell me more about night waking and milk thistle please.

stayathomegardener · 26/01/2023 13:47

Glad you feel so much better @santaspeasants I'm having a water filled dry January with added B vitamins and still feeling rubbish so maybe the milk thistle is magic.

vera99 · 26/01/2023 13:52

It looks like it has a very good effect on sleep. Want to try it now.

www.reddit.com/r/Supplements/comments/xd7xlr/milk_thistle_blew_my_rem_sleep_through_the_roof/

Liver and thyroid are 2 of the most important organs period. There may be a marked correlation between liver detoxification and improved sleep quality. If your liver is working overtime your body is stressed. If your body is stressed sleep suffers. If your liver "relaxes" because it's workload has eased it would be logical to assume your nervous system and body will relax allowing more resources to be directed elsewhere. There are other ways to detox your liver. My approach has been to use milk thistle for a short duration such as a month and then focus on other sustainable detoxification approaches such as a glass of water with sole and lemon upon waking(hydrogen tablets can also be added).

There are anecdotal data as well as clinical data suggesting long term use of milk thistle should be avoided.
