Teacher's strike

ilkleymoorbartat · 25/01/2023 12:13

Am prepared to be flamed for this and told IABU, so just wanted to gage others opinions.

Have 3 kids 8, 5 & 10 months. School teachers on strike next week on Wednesday and we have an inset day on the Monday.

I'm seriously considering taking kids out of school on the Tuesday to have a little break somewhere.

The last year has been horrible, and it seems like a good chance to get a cheap break with little disruption.

Is this a completely terrible idea?

I don’t know how strict your kids school is, but obviously if your kids go back to school and say they’ve been on holiday you could get fined, with both parents getting a fine and two kids I probably wouldn’t risk it. But my daughter has been off sick a lot so they are on our backs anyways.

Nimbostratus100 · 25/01/2023 12:18

well, isnt there a rail strike too? The roads will be chocka

Forestwalks · 25/01/2023 12:18

I would. I have been thinking the same if the strike goes ahead in March on the 15/16th and our school has to close.

yousmellnice · 25/01/2023 12:19

Might as well. Call it a strike.

IDontCareMatthew · 25/01/2023 12:19

A mon-wed break in the U.K. in January?

Enjoy!

You can still have a little trip away.. we’ve done weekends in London, York and other cities with kids during the cold weather. They love going to a hotel for a couple of nights and having some activities/day trips books and meals out in restaurants. Would be even cheaper to book hotels in weektime!

cadburyegg · 25/01/2023 12:26

Sounds like a really good idea tbh

CatOnTheChair · 25/01/2023 12:27

Are the 8 and 5 year olds both off?
Not all year groups are affected, so if you haven't been told yet by school, I'd wait.

Personally, I wouldn't pull them out for the Tuesday, but I know I take a tougher stance on school attendance than many.

ilkleymoorbartat · 25/01/2023 12:28

Yeah both off.

Colourinsidethelines · 25/01/2023 12:28

I would for one day. Just check the school is definitely shut on Wednesday. One day makes little difference if they don’t usually have time off. And I say this as an ex teacher!

ilkleymoorbartat · 25/01/2023 12:30

We are pretty strict on attendance too tbh. My husband is leas willing to do it than I am.

OP posts:
TurtleTriplets · 25/01/2023 12:32

you only get fined for 10 sessions (5 full days) so one day would not result in a fine.

I would do it. Friday afternoon to Wednesday is a nice break.

Dragonsandcats · 25/01/2023 12:33

sounds a lovely idea to me.

Coasterfan · 25/01/2023 12:33

Oh lucky you, definitely do it!

ichundich · 25/01/2023 12:42

I'd do it if I were you.

ilkleymoorbartat · 25/01/2023 12:44

Oh interesting! Was gearing up for everyone to shout at me and say it was an awful idea!

OP posts:
Clarabellawilliamson · 25/01/2023 12:45

Another vote for do it!

NaturalBlondeYeahRight · 25/01/2023 12:45

In school this morning they told us that the government have advised schools to stay open regardless on strike days. Not all classes will be affected anyway.

LadyHarmby · 25/01/2023 12:46

I’m very anti kids missing school but I think this is fine, given their ages and you can have a good long break, Fri-Wed.

Oysterbabe · 25/01/2023 12:46

Yeah do it. I don't think the school is in a position to pretend they care about attendance.

Our school is open for the children of parents who work for the emergency services, their children are more deserving of education than mine. During lockdown the same children had normal lessons with their usual teachers, mine filled in a worksheet and watched TV while I tried to work.

edwinbear · 25/01/2023 12:47

At 8 & 5, I would too. And I'm also usually pretty strict on attendance. Surely, they will just have that awful cold/virus thing going about? Too good an opportunity to miss!

edwinbear · 25/01/2023 12:47

This too.

ilkleymoorbartat · 25/01/2023 12:48

The main issue is what to say to the school I guess. No chance the kids won't say we've not had a little break.

Well ours, which never closes for anything, sent us all an email this morning saying no classes will be open. Don't think the Government's advice counts for much these days.

DinnerThyme · 25/01/2023 12:49

I’m a former teacher and married to a teacher. If the school is actually closed on the Wednesday then I’d go for it, but if it’s not then I wouldn’t. Has it been confirmed that the school is closed?
