Teacher's strike

ilkleymoorbartat · 25/01/2023 12:13

Am prepared to be flamed for this and told IABU, so just wanted to gage others opinions.

Have 3 kids 8, 5 & 10 months. School teachers on strike next week on Wednesday and we have an inset day on the Monday.

I'm seriously considering taking kids out of school on the Tuesday to have a little break somewhere.

The last year has been horrible, and it seems like a good chance to get a cheap break with little disruption.

Is this a completely terrible idea?

YANBU, they can't take action against you for not sending your kids to school one day and claim they can't teach them the next because of a strike.

Stupid having the inset day on the Monday and strike on Wednesday, why not just move the inset day to Wednesday and be done with it? That way the kids don't lose any schooling and the teachers are just wasting their extra day off (I know technically an inset day isn't meant to be a day off, but for most teachers it is in reality).

Fuckingfuckssake · 25/01/2023 14:18

I'd be all over it, hotels will be cheap too if you get it booked quick, YHA have a January sale on, 25% off rooms till the end of March.

Fuck who?
Who's going to lose out here? Certainly not the teachers.

Haha knew someone would jump up at that. But only people going to moan would be school, so yeah fuck em.

Lavendergreen34 · 25/01/2023 14:23

I would just do it! And tell the school the truth.

Ours have said they advise finding alternative care but nothing is set in stone - I'm thinking of doing same on 15/16 March and also taking DS out for the Friday 17

Same!!

Do it!!

My DD’s school is closed on Wed 1st too, but we’ve had an email notifying us of the next 3 strike days. 2 of them are together- - Wed & Thurs, so we’re ringing in on the Friday so we can have a long break together. Also Mother’s Day weekend.

Yeah do it. I don't think the school is in a position to pretend they care about attendance.

Our school is open for the children of parents who work for the emergency services, their children are more deserving of education than mine. During lockdown the same children had normal lessons with their usual teachers, mine filled in a worksheet and watched TV while I tried to work.

Those key workers weren't able to work from home. You were. Schools had to draw the line somewhere and it's ridiculous to say that meant they didn't care about attendance.

ofwarren · 25/01/2023 14:24

Only 2 classes closed in our school, and they aren't my DCs classes.
Gutted 🤣
I was looking forward to a few days off.

ilovesooty · 25/01/2023 14:27

ilkleymoorbartat · 25/01/2023 12:48

The main issue is what to say to the school I guess. No chance the kids won't say we've not had a little break.

Just be honest. It will be marked unauthorised but it doesn't matter for a day. I think taking them out is fine but lying isn't.

That's so ridiculous I hardly know where to start with it.

BustaGrind · 25/01/2023 14:33

Yeah do it. Tell the truth.

Hi school, John and Liz won't be in on Tuesday as we're away for a few days. They'll be back Thursday.

Why not educate yourself about these matters before making a fool of yourself on a mainstream website.

KalvinPhillipsBoots · 25/01/2023 14:42

Do it and they can shove their fines as well.

Are people really this thick?

BlackFriday · 25/01/2023 14:49

Yep.

BetiYeti · 25/01/2023 14:49

YANBU OP. Enjoy the break.

nonamehere · 25/01/2023 14:50

'the teachers are just wasting their extra day off (I know technically an inset day isn't meant to be a day off, but for most teachers it is in reality'

You are joking?

I'm an ex-teacher; any INSET days I've attended have been 9-4 back to back training sessions and/or meetings. The bonus was an uninterrupted half hour for lunch, which didn't happen on ordinary teaching days.

OhmygodDont · 25/01/2023 14:52

Go for it. It’s only 1 day off so meh.

Im still awaiting news from all three schools.

Frosty1000 · 25/01/2023 14:55

I don't know how a school can know if they're closing yet? I thought striking teachers didn't need to declare until the morning of the strike and if ta is available then they'll have cover. Maybe I've misinterpreted it.

BlackFriday · 25/01/2023 14:55

@nonamehere Don't rise to it. It's not worth it.

BlackFriday · 25/01/2023 14:56

@Frosty1000 TAs are not meant to be covering, no.

ilkleymoorbartat · 25/01/2023 15:00

As an aside, I completely support the strikes.

OP posts:
Choconut · 25/01/2023 15:17

At 14 and 16 I'd say no, at 8 and 5 I'd do it without a second thought.

Ohgoodyanotherone · 25/01/2023 15:37

ilkleymoorbartat · 25/01/2023 13:49

For those saying they'd do it, what would you say to school / kids. I don't want to lie.

You're taking them on an educational residential trip.

I don't think TAs are covering. Also that won't apply to secondary schools that don't have TAs, and therefore are more likely to close.

ilkleymoorbartat · 25/01/2023 15:44

😂 @Ohgoodyanotherone I was going to get them to write a diary each day if went tbf .
