AIBU?
I'm creeped out and don't think I'll be able to sleep
Millana · 24/01/2023 23:32
This happened about 1hr ago and I'm still creeped out.
I put on my clean pjs and got into bed. I'm by myself tonight so all the lights were off etc. My hip started itching/feeling a bit scratchy so I adjusted my trousers to move the label that seemed to be bothering me. A few minutes later, it was bothering me again so I thought maybe a feather was sticking into my trousers so had a feel about.
Not a label. Not a feather. There was something MOVING in my trousers. I jumped out of bed as fast as I could and pulled my trousers down. I managed to get it out of my trousers. I think it was a GIANT moth. It flew (possibly jumped?) off before I could properly look but it was MASSIVE. Seriously, it look up most of my cupped hand.
I think it was a moth. I'm sort of guessing it was because it felt fluttery or shaky and furry in my hand.
This giant fluttery furry thing that was IN my pjs is now somewhere in my house.
I'm all itchy and unsettled. Insects don't normally bother me but now I'm all itchy and had a thought about more moths in my bed/pjs climbing up my nose while I sleep.
On top of that... I'm freaked out but also sad now that the moth (if that's what it was) is going to die because there is no way that escapade didn't damage it's wings.
I mean, what is a giant moth doing in my pjs in January?!
Shudder. Check your pjs over folks.
Am I being unreasonable?

Having an absolute horrific and, I understand, wholly irrational fear of butterflies, the idea of one being in my clothes would lead me to expire on the spot!

At the risk of staying the obvious, leave a light on (with a shade) in the corridor and leave your bedroom door open. Then you know it’s not in the bedroom.
Wings might be fine. Moths are surprisingly sturdy.
If it makes you feel any better, there is no real difference between moths and butterflies. Would you be as freaked out if there had been a butterfly in your T-shirt on a summers day?
My daughter got one caught in her hair, she about 10, totally freaked her out, and me, I thought she was being murdered. I had to write her a note for school to excuse her from the school trip to Butterfly World the following year.

I remember reading a short story about a moth that grew and covered someone's face while they slept.
PleaseCleanTheWholeToilet · 25/01/2023 00:38
I always always shake my clothes and pjs out before putting them on for this reason
I have a phobia of something crawling up my vagina
PleaseCleanTheWholeToilet · 25/01/2023 00:38
Did you hear about the woman who went to the dr after having pain in the vagina and he found a baby tortoise/ turtle

Mothman!! The urban legend of moth like man!
Yes! ''Beware the Mothman''
But I don't think he climbs inside people pyjamas.
I felt something sleek and furry in my bed just now..
It has sharp teeth and a cool nose.

That's a really strange phobia.. It's not like a woman's vagina is like a ready made tunnel. It has 'Gates'!
It's nothing like a fake one.

Pull yerself together woman! It’s a moth, not a tarantula! They don’t sting or bite or anything 🙄
PleaseCleanTheWholeToilet · 25/01/2023 01:15

AntiHop · 25/01/2023 01:17
It could be worse. I once woke up to find an insect in my ear.

I have a huge phobia of butterflies! No one in my life understands it.

It wasnt a moth.
I cannot tell a lie...it was me.
I was on a late, got lost on the way home and found some nice clean smelling pj;s and curled up. I am really sorry but I am home now and in my (not so nice smelling if I am honest) Oodie.
You are safe and I have put "Work to Home" in my favourite in my sat nav :)

Moths, particularly some of the larger ones, do like to crawl into dark spaces - many of that sort of moth spends much of its time hidden in the depths of hedges so we rarely see them out and about.
They can survive a significant amount of wing damage, moth collectors often find really battered ones with torn bits, scales missing so the wings look clear etc.
Some will be hanging on surviving past their time due to being trapped in a house, and some will be winter emerging or truly over-wintering moths. None can harm you, though big ones can flap about and bash you in the head and generally be useless terrifying bastards.

I once rode my bike to work and whilst getting changed I heard a buzzing. A bee had flown in through a gap in my helmet and got wedged in my hair .
Managed to shake it out, took it outside in a cup and it flew off. But I didn't half jump about shaking my head when I realised it was in my hair, panicked it was a wasp 🤣
TinyTeapots · 25/01/2023 05:04
Meh. Got bitten by a redback spider on the back of my knee once that had managed to get into a pair of leggings. Incredibly incredibly painful. But the moth would gross me out as they are kind of mushy and ick and furry and weird.

My cousin got eaten by one of these. Stay safe.

My dd told me there was a giant moth in the bathroom on the bath. DH went in, rescued it with a towel and put it outside. It was a pipistrelle bat which are protected. They are smaller than average. If the windows are open in spring/summer they do some in. That said, it is very early in the year for this but just my experience.
spiderlight · 25/01/2023 11:00
You have my sympathy. I found myself sharing my bed with a bee the size of my head last summer. It didn't sting me but DH had a hell of a time getting it out because it decided to fly into a really awkward gap at the top of a ceiling-height bookcase. He thought I was exaggerating about the size until it came out at his face 😂
NancyPickford · 25/01/2023 11:37
My ultimate fear - moths and butterflies scare the beejesus out of me. And if I found one like that in my house, let alone IN MY PYJAMAS then I think I would scream the place down. I'm not scared of mice, or rats, or snakes but the flying, fluttering creatures - I include daddy-long-legs (shudder) are my irrational phobias.
