But can anyone explain to thicko me what apple TV is? DC13 wants to buy the device, but I have literally no idea what the point of it is, or how it relates to the apple TV app, or what apple TV plus is. We already have Netflix, Prime, and Disney plus.

Can DC watch Netflix on it? Are there loads of good programs that are only available on Apple? Do you actually need the device, or can you cast it to eg a Chromecast?

(I've tried googling, but the info requires a baseline of knowledge that I don't have).

Yanbu- I would be interested in answers too!!!

Me too!

I'm always happy to learn about this stuff as I have no clue!

Washaday · 24/01/2023 19:21

Is that the one with Ted Lasso on? I think we found it with our Roku stick.

poormanspombears · 24/01/2023 19:22

There is an Apple TV (astronomical amounts of money and still not sure of the point) or there is a streaming service called Apple TV that most smart tvs support which is like prime, Netflix etc.

derelicte · 24/01/2023 19:24

The device DC wants is about £70 new I think, but there's a second hand one for £28.

We have dumb TVs with Chromecasts.

DC has an apple phone btw, but the rest of us are all android.

You can get an Apple TV box thing (about 5 inches square) and on this you have your apple account and can watch everything you’ve bought on iTunes.

Then there’s Apple TV + the app which you subscribe to monthly/yearly which has Ted Lasso (among others) on it.

poormanspombears · 24/01/2023 19:27

Some top boxes might have Apple TV built into it but it might be worth seeing if you can get one with them all on and get rid of your chrome cast? Failing that, can you not download it onto chrome cast?

Now tv boxes might give you access to all of them?

derelicte · 24/01/2023 19:29

Christ alive... When did tellies get so complicated 🤣

Actually looks like the new apple tv boxes (£169) have the Apple TV + app on them already.

mumumumumumm · 24/01/2023 19:30

Hi, we use Apple TV, its basically a device that allows you to have all your streaming service apps in one place.

It supports Netflix, Prime TV, Disney+, Now TV, BBCiplayer etc.

It's comparable to say a Now Tv or Amazon Fire Stick but has the typical Apple user interface.

I particularly like that it can series link your favourite shows across the apps (except Netflix) so you can see when the next episode of something is available.

mumumumumumm · 24/01/2023 19:36

Apple TV+ is just another subscription based streaming service. It's had some good original shows on it but we tend to favour Disney+ these days so don't actually have a subscription. You don't have to have an Apple TV+ subscription to be able to use an Apple TV box.

derelicte · 24/01/2023 19:41

Okay, thanks all. I feel a bit better equipped now!

@mumumumumumm

The one DC is looking at is 3rd gen... I have a feeling that it may have less functionality than yours.

I don't know why you would be buying one of these things unless you have a very old TV. They are old technology. Do you not have Apps on your TV? Apple TV is on there.

Ahh that's as far as my knowledge gets me 🤣 DH tells me he thinks ours is a 2017 4k 1st Gen. How that compares to the one your DC is looking at, I don't know.

derelicte · 24/01/2023 20:02

Ah okay, that's interesting! Thanks again!

We've had one connected to our living room for years (partner is a gadget freak) and i still wouldn't know what it does 🤣
I do polish the box weekly though and the remote control is lovely and shiny 🤣

derelicte · 24/01/2023 20:21

@MyNameisMathilda yes, we have very basic TVs!

Apple TV has/had Mick Herron's Slow Horses on it. We watched both series then cancelled it each time. It's only about £5.99 a month.

Isn't that Apple TV+?

We have an Apple TV box and a newish TV.

It suits us because we each have our own log ons to it.

In that case it will allegedly turn your TV into a smart TV.

PriamFarrl · 24/01/2023 23:27

There are two different things.

Apple TV+ is a streaming service, like Netflix/Disney+. You subscribe to that.

An Apple TV is a device, like a set top box. I use one to watch all my TV on. You hook it up to the tv and you put apps on it. So I have iplayer, itv, Channel 4, UKTV Play, BritBox, Disney+, Netflix, Amazon Prime on mine. They all run on the Apple TV.

You don’t need AppleTV+ to get an Apple TV and you don’t need an AppleTV to get AppleTV+.
