How "house viewing ready" is your house?

At this precise moment, if you were/are going to have people coming to look at your house, how "ready" is your house?

I'm not planning on selling but mine is a disgrace. 😔

It's been slowly dawning on me that if we were to sell, we'd have to put a lot of work into it so why are we living with the mess and clutter and half decorated rooms etc? Why would we put all that effort in for other people but not us?

Now I need to put that into action and change it.

Very good perspective.
If it makes you feel any better.... ours is not house viewing ready!

GertrudePerkinsPaperyThing · 24/01/2023 16:15

It is not.

TokyoSushi · 24/01/2023 16:16

If DH & I worked really hard, I reckon it could be ready in about 3 hours

neverknowinglyunreasonable · 24/01/2023 16:16

It's 100% ready at all times but only if the buyers were planning to demolish and rebuild.

Hahahahahaaaaaa.

Hopefullyupwards · 24/01/2023 16:17

Good perspective OP. Not viewer ready at all here.

Caspianberg · 24/01/2023 16:19

It’s pretty good tbh. Mainly toys out in living room atm, and there’s wet outdoor clothing hanging up in hallway drying from snow.
The other rooms all good. So, 10 mins?

Whatsshecalled · 24/01/2023 16:20

Ummm, could be ready for tomorrow morning (annoyingly we had guests over the weekend and it was immaculate on Friday morning, I don't know why we can't keep it that way ever)

Handbagsandgladrags81 · 24/01/2023 16:20

Quite - it's more the garden that I'd be embarrassed about- not exactly a relaxing outdoor space at the moment

Inside I've just spent £40 on paint and £35 on some peel & stick paper to do the hallway. Not expensive and should take a weekend to get done. Are there small projects like that you could start with to smarten it up for yourself?

Beginningless · 24/01/2023 16:20

I don’t want my house to be viewer ready! When we sold our last house, it was shit living like that, keeping everything pristine and all the day to day crap that you need packed away.

mrshenny · 24/01/2023 16:22

Also mine is not viewer ready. It's 'lived in" 🫢

Idrinklotsofcoffee · 24/01/2023 16:22

About 1.5 hours of tidying and faffing.

YoComoManzanas · 24/01/2023 16:22

It's kind of ready with a full day's tidy and clean. But only because we have been house hunting for 2years now. Bit tired of it now but we live in a highly desirable postcode so the next step up the ladder is a big one unfortunately.

CrunchyCarrot · 24/01/2023 16:22

Not at all. If someone was to view right now they'd want a huge reduction in the price!

😅

That is what partially prompted my thoughts. Police had to break into a neighbours house (they were fine). It made me think about how embarrassed I would be if police had to break into my house (admittedly it would probably be fairly low down on the priorities in that situation!). Just things like a dining table filled with clutter, unwashed dishes, dirty kitchen floor, so much dust and so on.

When we sold our old house, it probably took about a week (5 full work days) to get everything sorted. Involved paint touch ups, general decorating and fixing of things that had broken, decluttering (old house had zero storage, so a lot had to go into storage in MIL's garage) and in one part of the house a whole new floor! It took a long time and cost about £1,000 as we'd let things get into such a state of disrepair in some areas.
Now we've moved, we try and keep on top of things as much as possible so do paint touch ups every few months, general maintenance for wear and tear as soon as we notice it. I'd say with a bit of a tidy and clean round, our current house would be ready to go on the market within 24 hours or less.

Ffsmakeitstop · 24/01/2023 16:25

DH is decorating our spare bedroom which I know is going to make me feel guilty about letting the rest of it go a lot a bit. It's all nicely decorated but could really do with spring cleaning and I just CBA. Before anyone starts he does do housework as well but he's had a stroke so is not as active as he used to be. The spare room is tiny and he can take it steady. I however have no excuse.

MrZogsSexWax · 24/01/2023 16:25

Mine needs about 5 mins to prep but only because I have had a roof leak and the builder came round this afternoon to look at it, inside and out. I knew he would have to go I to the bedrooms so everything is tickety boo.

The only bad thing about the house is the ceiling stain itself which appeared at the time of the Prince Harry Frostbite hiatus and the stain looks like a massive….. I can attach photos if you like.

Millana · 24/01/2023 16:27

That's before we even think about the half tiled bathroom, broken floor tiles in the hall or bare plaster and no skirting boards in our bedroom. Some of that has been like it for years. :(

Nimblesandbimbles · 24/01/2023 16:29

Ours isn’t too cluttered but it isn’t well maintained so lots of things coming off their hinges & marks/ scuffs on the walls. The ‘study’ is also a dumping ground. Probably the reason we don’t have people round that much!

TeenDivided · 24/01/2023 16:30

About 5% if the comments on the house reviewing threads are anything to go by. Would apparently need to redecorate throughout, new bathrooms and kitchen, remove all the pictures from the wall, get rid of about half our furniture, and gut DH's man cave to stage it as something different.
Not going to happen!

Rebel2023 · 24/01/2023 16:31

Would need about 90 mins

MatildaTheCat · 24/01/2023 16:31

I like to have the house in a good enough state that if we had half an hour’s notice we’d be ready for guests. However I wouldn’t want them opening any (all built in) cupboards.

I think your reasoning is really sound and it seems like maybe you are ready to make a good old list. In six months or so you might not be even thinking about wanting a nicer house.
