To think that Lidl/Aldi are no cheaper than Sainsbury's etc now?

I know with the cost of living crisis food costs have shot up dramatically, but I am really starting to see no difference between the 'budget' supermarkets and the higher end ones. I could literally get a weeks shop for just £35 (only me) a few years ago at Lidl, now it's easily £65pw, and that's with top up shops. I've gone back to Sainsbury's now as their fresh stuff and meat is much better.

All shopping has increased considerably, wherever you shop.
When I first moved from Sainsbury to Aldi 20 odd years ago I saved more than 1/3 of what I had been spending in Sainsburys. Where I live, I use Sainsbury's car park for the High Street, so occasionally pop in for a couple of items whilst there, and I still think "HOW much?" for things that I buy regularly in Aldi for considerable less.

I read last week that the latest 'Which' survey put their Aldi basket as the cheapest once again comparing items like for like.

Aldi is cheaper for coffee and crisps (which are getting more and more expensive. Though probably best avoided anyway. )

I’ve gone to lidl after using Tesco for years, started about 6 weeks ago, spent £76 this week, trolley nearly full.

Im sad and put it all in my Tesco app and it came to £94 for the same sort of stuff.

Only thing I can’t get from lidl is my ds nappies as they don’t cater for older kids in nappies (9 year old with disabilities) Tesco do so I go there for them once a month.

Lidl plus app is ok, once a month I get 10% off a shop, a £2 voucher and a free bakery item and free Lidl item.

Sainsbury’s I find really expensive (for the stuff I usually buy) if I ever nip in I always say I’m not going back.

Shop around for the nappies as Morrisons and sainsburys often have them on offer

I spent 250 in Lidl thinking it was cheaper and stocked up....going back to Tesco on line so I can control myself and not buy useless tat

I do think Lidl is still cheaper on a lot of things and I always spend £250 a month and then kick the next month off with a big shop to use my 10% off voucher. I always spend more in Morrisons and Sainsbury's, but like pp said more choice sometimes leads to more spending. Also Lidl is most local to us so petrol savings too

DoNutSweatTheSmallStuff · 25/01/2023 18:25

Aldi definitely works out cheaper for us.
Quicker shop too as less options & smaller places (and super fast cashiers!).
So saves time & money!

Yes prices at Aldi have gone up. But no doubt they have also gone up at Sainsbury’s. So no it will still be more expensive there.

Ive always viewed, and experienced prices at, Sainsbury’s as basically Tesco but add on 5-10%. Very rarely have I ever seen products cheaper there. Even when products are on promotion, the promotion is not as good as what Tesco offer when the same product is on offer.
