To think that Lidl/Aldi are no cheaper than Sainsbury's etc now?

I know with the cost of living crisis food costs have shot up dramatically, but I am really starting to see no difference between the 'budget' supermarkets and the higher end ones. I could literally get a weeks shop for just £35 (only me) a few years ago at Lidl, now it's easily £65pw, and that's with top up shops. I've gone back to Sainsbury's now as their fresh stuff and meat is much better.

I suppose it all depends on what you and your family eat but I used to do asda online and it was around £90 pw but over the last year was tending to be around £120. Switched to lidls a few months ago and I'm around 70-80 pw

We shopped at Lidl's and Aldi, as both we closer to us than Tesco. Both still seem to be cheaper although not so by as much as hitherto. We have noticed that their perishable goods (fruit, veg, milk, eggs, etc.) now have very short shelf lives, which has led us to go to Tesco for them. A branch of Morrisons opened up some years ago, which was quite competitive but it closed before the Pandemic.

Lots of the bigger names have long term contracts with their farmers. Aldi and Lidl have a small core but buy the remainder on the open market. The price on the open market is sky high now so they're suffering. 3 years ago the open market was low and they were winning.

pointythings · 24/01/2023 16:50

I find Sainsbury's very very expensive. I usually do Aldi and then pick up the things they don't have at Tesco or Asda. No midweek shop. Cat food is from Pets at Home because my cats are fussy.

BlackCatTabbyCat · 24/01/2023 17:07

I agree. I've always been a fan of Aldi and have done my shopping there for years. I could get loads for about £30/£40. I was in getting my shopping last week and the prices had shot up so much. I decided there and then that from now on I will do an online Tesco shop. They price match a lot of Aldi stuff so I'm spending around the same. It's also a lot less stressful as recently my local Aldi has been a nightmare it's so busy it takes forever to find a parking space then when you get one there's never any trolleys or baskets so have to hang around waiting on one. Then you get to the check out and they never have bags. Add 2 children to the mix and I always leave the shop a flustered mess Blush.

Rebel2023 · 24/01/2023 17:14

I still find Aldi cheaper
My shop used to be £40 in Sainsburys, then it crept to £60 ish
Now I spend £65 in Aldi BUT get loads more and often the nicer stuff like berries, mango etc
So more food and nicer

Hawkins001 · 24/01/2023 17:19

It depends on the items , e.g. Veg seems similar across the shops, it's a mix really

OnlyFoolsnMothers · 24/01/2023 17:22

No way- sainsburys is extortionate. sainsburys food is Ocado prices at aldi standard

danni0509 · 24/01/2023 17:30

I’ve gone to lidl after using Tesco for years, started about 6 weeks ago, spent £76 this week, trolley nearly full.

Im sad and put it all in my Tesco app and it came to £94 for the same sort of stuff.

Only thing I can’t get from lidl is my ds nappies as they don’t cater for older kids in nappies (9 year old with disabilities) Tesco do so I go there for them once a month.

Lidl plus app is ok, once a month I get 10% off a shop, a £2 voucher and a free bakery item and free Lidl item.

Sainsbury’s I find really expensive (for the stuff I usually buy) if I ever nip in I always say I’m not going back.

OhmygodDont · 24/01/2023 17:30

See I can’t do a full shop in lidl even when we go self catering on holiday always end up in Morrisons doing another £60.

I went into aldi the other day £1.25 peppers sainsburys wonky £1 as a beat aldi price. I noticed that one because I refused to buy the aldi ones knowing I could get them cheaper plus some nice prawns around the corner. Plus I got 1 point for the £1 and then because I’d purchased peppers before I’d got a 10 point coupon for peppers.

Oblomov22 · 24/01/2023 17:33

I read article this week that Aldi and Lidl had dropped. But basically it showed you need to shop in all places because eggs, cheese, apples etc were cheaper in different supermarkets. You'd need to go to all 6 to get the best deals!

stepMummY1 · 24/01/2023 17:35

So much price matching now at Sainsbo plus you have to compare like with like and by that I mean brands. Of course a tin of some European stuff will be cheaper than a branded one from Sainsbo. I like my food and don't want inferior products. I tried kebabs once from one of them - it was like sawdust, full of fillers.

pointythings · 24/01/2023 18:48

@stepMummY1 I often find that the 'European stuff' is tastier and better than the branded stuff that is popular with shoppers - but then I'm not British.

Helen901 · 24/01/2023 18:51

Im mostly shopping in Sainsburys/Tesco now but had to pop into a morrisons earlier. Shocked at their prices £5.25 for 18 hula hoops 🫣

To think that Lidl/Aldi are no cheaper than Sainsbury's etc now?
YouJustDoYou · 24/01/2023 18:52

I find Aldi is the cheapest, Lidl next cheapest etc. Still cheaper than Sainsbos.

Womencanlift · 24/01/2023 19:04

Aldi prices have definitely shot up, even in the last few weeks. And I used to always get a few 30% things if I went first thing on a Sunday. Not seen any mark downs for months, and that is going at different times

I had to go to Sainsbury’s at the weekend to pick up an Argos package and grabbed a few bits while I was in there. Not good value for money at all

I have started going to a different Aldi branch that is food only so I can resist the temptation of the middle aisle. Only problem is the food only ones have a bakery (so much nicer than Lidl’s) so now facing the temptation of chocolate twist pastries instead!!!

Justmuddlingalong · 24/01/2023 19:13

Today I visited home bargains, Sainsburys, Iceland, the butchers and the bakers. I had time and enjoyed the walk, but I no longer just use one shop for what I need. I've no car so visit the shops a few times a week rather than doing a big shop with top ups.

FredaDrainedHerCocoaCup · 24/01/2023 19:25

Never thought I would ever shop at M&S but last year I found so many things much cheaper and better quality so I do a part shop in there. Net of avocados £2 massive bunch of beetroot 65p. My local one does bags of overripe bananas 25p.
I've nearly stopped shopping at lidl now because their prices have shot up so much.

M&S is the cheapest place I have found bread. Just a basic loaf (bit like Warburtons Toastie) is something like 70p. Similar elsewhere is definitely over £1

GlassBunion · 24/01/2023 20:53

Aldi/Lidl are discount supermarkets and operate on lower profit and cost margins. They can't afford to absorb higher prices like other supermarkets so their prices 'appear' to have gone up more so than the others.

ViscountessBridgerton · 24/01/2023 20:55

Our Sainsbury's shop was averaging £120 a week (online shop). Since switching to Aldi we spend approx £80. I know it is largely because we've been forced away from buying certainly branded things (lurpak, pepsi etc) but it's working I guess. Also not paying delivery fee.

ArseInTheCoOpWindow · 24/01/2023 21:01

I stopped going to Lidl. I wasted too much money on their nice ice creams and pain au chocolates. I didn’t find them much cheaper than Sainsbury apart from cleaning stuff and ice cream of course!

Now l just go to Sains and buy less ice cream

trampoline123 · 24/01/2023 21:14

I've definitely noticed that meat is more expensive in Lidl and Aldi lately, but I do think overall it's still cheaper than the other supermarkets.

Darhon · 24/01/2023 21:17

Aldi was so expensive last time I shopped there that I put the same basket into Ocado - picking cheaper options at Ocado - and it was definitely 25-30% more at Ocado.

jetadore · 24/01/2023 23:49

These threads are meaningless as everyone’s shopping baskets are different! Purely anecdotal evidence is meaningless! In like for like comparisons Aldi consistently comes out cheaper than Sainsbury’s.
