Scream - 14 y/o DD

Would you let your DD watch Scream at friend's sleepover. She's nearly 15 (it is a 15+) but she isn't overly mature and gets scared easily! She hasn't watched any scary films before and so it's a tough one to know whether she should go and watch it or not.

She's desperate to go and I can't remember how scary it is (I was terrified in my 20s!). WWYD?

Scream is rated 18 though @ParkingPermitWoes

Been watching horror films since I was about 11! Always used to make my friends watch them at sleepovers 😂 it’s what you do when you’re teens! I still get excited watching a good horror and I’m 30 this year

Screen isn't a horror, it's parody, dark humour

I would have no problem with a 15 year watching it

Scream is a horror. A satirical one, yes.

I think if half the people on here actually rewatched Scream 1996 they'd be surprised. I'm not sure they aren't getting it muddled up with Scary Movie.

GorgeousLadyofWrestling · 23/01/2023 21:06

@CarolDunne of course it’s a horror!

Yes it’s also a homage on slasher movie tropes but it’s still a horror.

A girl is taunted by an unknown caller who disembowels her boyfriend in front of her, breaks into her house, slits her throat and hangs her.

Another girl killed in a garage door.

The principal is hung from the football goal (I think - it’s been a while!)

The WHOLE premise is a murderer stalking and scaring their victims over the phone. It is satirical at times but so much about is paying homage the slasher movie genre. It’s knowing and clever and very meta but it’s still a horror film.

Scream isn't that bad, makes you jump and the beginning is a bit scary when she first gets the call. Mine were about 12/13 when they watched it but they are really into horror films, I used to be at their age but not so much now. I wouldn't say no at 14, if it was an 18 then that's different.

PugInTheHouse · 23/01/2023 21:29

We watched it about 18 months ago, it's definitely not as scary as I thought it was, films have moved on a lot. Its very far fetched and comical.

Zanatdy · 23/01/2023 21:31

She’s 15. It’s a film, ie it’s not real. Didn’t you watch scary movies as a teen? Sure I was in primary still when I watched nightmare on Elm street. If my DD wanted to watch it (she’s almost 15) then she could. I doubt she would as she’s not into scary films but if she’s aware it’s pretty scary, but not true, then she can go for it. I don’t police everything she does

I have watched it fairly recently, and have seen it several times. I've only seen the absolute shit that is scary movie once. I know which film I'm talking about.

I watched it recently and laughed at loud. It's ridiculous. There are some really grim, gruesome films on Netflix. Scream isn't like that, it's satirical and very much American high school esq. if my teen was going to watch any horror at a sleepover it would be this one.
