Scream - 14 y/o DD

Would you let your DD watch Scream at friend's sleepover. She's nearly 15 (it is a 15+) but she isn't overly mature and gets scared easily! She hasn't watched any scary films before and so it's a tough one to know whether she should go and watch it or not.

She's desperate to go and I can't remember how scary it is (I was terrified in my 20s!). WWYD?

That's all the fun of being a teenager, scary movies at sleepovers.

Yeah. In my day it was Halloween, Alien and Nightmare on Elm Street.

courgettigreensadwater · 23/01/2023 11:27

It doesn't make much difference but I presume we're talking about the 2022 release? There's five of them I think. Or are you talking about the original 90's one. As PP said it's satire and quite comical in places it's so 'bad'. She'll be fine.

JorisBonson · 23/01/2023 11:27

I remember sneaking to see the cinema to see the original one and it was fine. She can stop watching if she finds it that bad.

monicagellerbing · 23/01/2023 11:28

@BessMarvin traumatised? Unclench for goodness sake

Dotjones · 23/01/2023 11:29

Depends where you are, ratings are different by country (I've copied this from BBFC and can't be arsed to go through putting line feeds in, it's alphabetical):

Argentina:16 Australia:MA15+ Austria:16 Brazil:16 Brazil:14 (1999, TV rating) Bulgaria:D Canada:18A (Alberta/British Columbia) Canada:18A (Canadian Home Video rating) Canada:R (Manitoba) Canada:18 (Nova Scotia) Canada:R (original rating, Ontario) Canada:16+ (original rating, Quebec) Canada:18+ (TV rating, Quebec) Canada:18A (2020, re-rating, Ontario) Canada:13+ (2008, re-rating, Quebec) Chile:18 Czechia:15 Denmark:15 Egypt:Not Rated (self-applied) Finland:K-16 France:16 (original rating) France:12 (re-rating) Germany:16 (2011, re-rating, uncut) Germany:16 (1997-2011, cut, video version) Germany:18 (original rating, 1996-2011) Greece:K-17 Hong Kong:IIB Hungary:18 Iceland:16 India:A India:UA (TV) Indonesia:17+ Ireland:18 Israel:16 Italy:VM14 Japan:PG-12 (director's cut) Malaysia:18 Mexico:B Netherlands:16 Netherlands:12 (tv rating) New Zealand:R16 Nigeria:15 Norway:18 (director's cut) Norway:15 (original rating) Philippines:R-18 Poland:16 (self-applied) Portugal:M/16 Romania:I.C.-14 Russia:18+ Russia:16+ (edited TV version) Saudi Arabia:R12 Singapore:M18 Singapore:PG (cut) South Africa:16 South Korea:(Banned) (original rating) South Korea:15 (2011, re-rating) South Korea:18 (1998, re-rating) Spain:18 Sweden:15 Sweden:18 (director's cut) Switzerland:16 (canton of Geneva) Switzerland:16 (canton of Vaud) Taiwan:unrated Taiwan:unrated (self-applied) Turkey:18+ (self-applied) United Kingdom:18 United States:TV-MA (DLSV) United States:R (certificate #34995) United States:TV-14 (edited TV version) United States:TV-MA (tv rating) United Arab Emirates:18+ (self-applied) Vietnam:C18

Some places ban it, others let 13yo watch it. It depends where you are as to how mature your child is.

Calphurnia88 · 23/01/2023 11:29

Watching films you aren't quite old enough for is teenage right of passage.

This, within reason. I watched The Exorcist at my friends holiday home when I was 13yo - would not recommend that, but Scream is more jumpy than anything else. Tell her to cover her eyes if she feels scared, I still do that in my 30s 🙃

RaiseTheStakesAndMakeTheLastWordDuckhead · 23/01/2023 11:33

I don’t think it’s that bad, but you know your DD best. Not sure you can really tell an almost-15 year old that she can’t watch a 15 film at her friend’s house though.

DrMarciaFieldstone · 23/01/2023 11:35

Yes, it’s not realistic scary, it’s semi-comedy, but DC isn’t sensitive.

I must have been about this age when we all sneaked into the cinema to see these films (showing my age).

Flev · 23/01/2023 11:37

If she's easily scared, please be careful!

I watched it at uni (peer pressure to go along) and I still get images from it flashing into my brain when I'm a bit on edge (eg walking home late at night). I've learned that whilst I might cope OK at the time I'm building up potential issues for the future - so I choose to steer clear of all horror films.

Londono · 23/01/2023 11:39

I think young people these days (and yes I hear myself sounding old too) are far more exposed to scary and scarier things than we were. The Harry Potters would have scared me as a child and my kids weren't fazed. I watched Scream with DD, 13, and I told her who died in advance during the scary scenes (she asked) to take some of the suspense away for her but she loved it anyway and like others say, it is actually quite a funny film.

BernadetteRostankowskiWolowitz · 23/01/2023 11:39

Yes I would. Its about the age we all watched it in my friendship group.

Greatly · 23/01/2023 11:40

I love horror but my dd16 doesn't and would hate it.

RosieConner · 23/01/2023 11:40

I certainly wouldn't have any problems with it. The IMDb have a detailed "Parent's Guide" for the film if that helps. www.imdb.com/title/tt0117571/parentalguide

budgiegirl · 23/01/2023 11:42

It depends what things usually scare her. It's nothing to do with her age at this point, but whether scary things will leave a lasting negative impression on her.

If she's never watched a scary film before, but you say she gets scared easily, what it is that generally scares her? Do these things cause her nightmares, upset, or other lasting effects? Or does she jump at things, but then get over it quickly? It's these sort of things that I would talk to her about before she watches a scary film.

Minfilia · 23/01/2023 11:43

Wasnt scream an 18 when it first came out?

but yes, I’d let her - if she doesn’t like it, lesson learned 🤣 teenagers need natural consequences sometimes!

SleeplessInEngland · 23/01/2023 11:43

"Horror" movies only rated 15 are usually for jump scares rather than for being outright disturbing.

Well plus side I'm not horribly rude.

I don't know how exactly to phrase it. But yes I regret having ever seen it.

Since some people are all "she'll 100 percent definitely totally be fine with it", it's worth noting that actually surprise surprise, everyone isn't exactly the same.

BessMarvin · 23/01/2023 11:48

I should also learn how to name change properly but there you go.

Greatly · 23/01/2023 11:49

No. Hereditary was a 15! 'Strong threat'

PinkSyCo · 23/01/2023 11:50

Sounds like a really fun sleepover for a soon to be 15 year old. Let the kid go.

Blort · 23/01/2023 11:50

Flameshame · 23/01/2023 10:39

Yes, come on everyone. Best part of being a teenager was watching horror movies and getting shit scared with your friends. Plus Scream is ‘fun’ horror, it’s not like torture porn.

Completely agree. It's also much less scary with your friends.

Blort · 23/01/2023 11:53

I also really like the website Common Sense Media to check whether a film is appropriate .

Look at the parents say and kids say ratings on each movie. It's normally a year or 2 older than mine can cope with.

afrikat · 23/01/2023 11:54

I was watching Cannibal Holocaust by 14 so maybe not the right person to respond, but I would say Scream is pretty brutal. Better off with something like Halloween

OnTheRunWithMannyMontana · 23/01/2023 11:54

They are all different but my DD is a year younger, about to turn 14, and I don't think she would be able to watch it.

I tried to get her to watch the sixth sense with me the other day and she was resolute it would be too scary so scream would be a no from her.
