To feel utterly green with jealousy when I see Mums at the gates for Pre-school looking gorgeous

I work at a Prep school and DD is 14m. Every morning I see two Women (friends) looking immaculate in their teeny velour tracksuits, great hair, manicured nails, 10m olds perched on a slim hipbone kissing their 3 y olds goodbye. They are like the supercool Moms and all the the other Mums kind of hover around them.
I used to be a very attractive young Woman, when I see them I feel like "how the buggery can you look so good with 2 kids I can't find time to put a comb through my hair". Maybe I need some treatments...

This is a silly thread I know.
I will go now.

HA! I do not looked groomed, I look passable

I do not have a shower in the morning when I do the school run as I end up shouting and getting annoyed

I have one in peace when I have got rid of them both

mcnoodle · 06/02/2008 10:25

Velour tracksuit is horribly J-Lo circa 1999.

Quick swizz of tinted moisturiser/touche eclat/mascara/cream blush/scrape hair into fashionably scruffy pony tail/DON'T wear black.

Sod em and their swishy manes - they sound dullety dull dull dull

nailpolish · 06/02/2008 10:26

oh i couldnt be arsed getting dressed to go out then undressed again for shower

Oliveoil · 06/02/2008 10:26

I can if it means I don't get interrupted with I NEED A POO MUMMY or DD1 HAS PINCHED MY TOAST WAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAAH

(off to do some work now, joy)

Shower and hair wash night before.

Do not sweat in bed - this is critical to plan

I think CWE should go out and buy a gorgeous colourful top to swish around in tomorrow am.

Buda · 06/02/2008 10:30

OrmIrian - yes! But not just yet unfortunately.

MP - Taunton-ish. DH was brought up in Somerset and it is the only place in the UK and can see himself living. He went to school in Taunton so we would like DS to do the same. Plan is either in 2 years or 5 years depending on some changes in the office here over the next few months. Haven't told DH but I am hoping for the 2 yr plan.

mcnoodle · 06/02/2008 10:30

Very few of us English types can wera black well. Is horribly draining and aging.

Colour perks up your whole face IMO

Sitting here, wearing black cardi/black trousers, feeling drab.

mcnoodle · 06/02/2008 10:32

Well white is not black - unless you are a toddler

I rest my case

OrmIrian · 06/02/2008 10:34

Well I suspect we'll still be here in 2 years time. So see you then! I like it here anyway!

I rarely wear make-up and my children's clothes are ancient and shabby and certainly not designer-ish. I guess I just feel that clothes have always been a big part of my life and just because I no longer have a job, doesn't mean I have to change my public identity. The advent of ebay also means that I can still dress as well as I used to but for probably 1/6th of what I used to spend at Net a Porter.

mcnoodle · 06/02/2008 10:45

CWE - I think you need to go talk to these paragons of gorgeousness

You need to shatter this illusion that they are all fabulous and interesting

You could feign interest in/knowledge of all things velour

CrushWithEyeliner · 06/02/2008 10:47

I know that's what DH said - "They sound pretty awful to me and they won't be anywhere near as intelligent as you, talk to them next time"..
Is that a compliment in there somewhere

anyway i don't want their brains - just their HAIR

I agree with mp. I have lived in West Dorset, and would regularly shop in Yeovil. I thought it was bad until I moved here...

The women here are split into 2 camps - the unwashed, unkempt, chain smoking hard-faced mothers with big gold earrings and polyester trackies (they can be either v skinny or obese), and the botoxed, bleached blonde, high maintenance manicured nouveaux riches. Common as muck, but putting on a good show of fabulousity.

There are very little in-between ( a camp I seem to fall into). The children at DD2s nursery have names like Riley-Jakk (I kid you not) and Harley. So however hard their mums look like they're trying, I am not going to be envying them, even though it is as much as I can do to be clean and brushed in the morning.

mcnoodle · 06/02/2008 10:50

I do think something happens after you have kids.

I used to be quite instinctively stylish, could wear most things and make them my own.

This has changed for some reason I don't understand. I have to force myself to try on things that are out of my comfort zone. It is harder to find things I really love. It helps to take a friend. My sister is still young, hip and child-free. She is brutally honest. I always come out of the shop with something lovely if I take her.

TheHonEnid · 06/02/2008 10:54

LOL @ come to somerset

I have to say velour trackies and immaculate hair not the Done Thing in Dorset

TheHonEnid · 06/02/2008 10:56

Buda you lived near me

UnquietDad · 06/02/2008 10:58

All those mums who come to school looking gorgeous I say:

Keep It Up

Especially those who wear skirts and FM Boots.

It's worth getting up for.

TheHonEnid · 06/02/2008 10:59

there is a mum at our school who is so pretty, immaculate hair, make up, gorgeous dresses, high heels

guess what

she is a lovely sweet person too!

some people just do it effortlessly and I love it, even if I am looking particurlarly daggy, she brightens my morning
