"My baby"

tocas · 22/01/2023 20:41

Genuinely not sure if I ABU or not. It makes me cringe when people call their children over the age of about 6 months "my baby". In my eyes they just don't necessarily seem like babies any more. I can sort of understand up until 12 months but definitely not after. I've come across people calling their child of nearly two year old "my baby".

Any child over 6 months isn't a baby Confused don't be daft.

I also think you are confusing 'A baby's with 'My baby' which isn't the same thing.

BeautifulDragon · 22/01/2023 21:50

'A baby' *

anothergrievingsister · 22/01/2023 21:51

I don’t have children.

My mother was mentally ill and I helped to bring up my much younger DB whom I loved ferociously. He recently died n a freak accident. There were just three of us at the crematorium, because my mother did not have the mental fortitude to face bringing his body home. I, generally an introvert who never referred to the guy this way in his lifetime, spent 45 minutes stroking his face and whispering ‘my baby’.

Your lack of imagination is shocking.

(We had a grand funeral with the cremains and there are many testaments from before and after my brother’s death to his extraordinary qualities, but if there had been none I would be no less proud of him or less mournful of his death)

Would you say to others in everyday conversation though? For example "I've got to go and pick my baby up from nursery"

Yes of course I would, what would I say instead?

WilsonMilson · 22/01/2023 21:55

Ridiculous. My ds is 17 and he’s still my baby!

Oopswediditagain2023 · 22/01/2023 21:56

I refer to my kids as "my babies" to them, ie when I cuddle them I go "ahh my little baby", but I wouldn't refer to them as "my baby" in conversations with other people

LottoLaura · 22/01/2023 21:56

YABU obviously

My mum still calls me her baby! And her mum does the same for her

ladycarlotta · 22/01/2023 21:59

I actually think it's pretty fair to refer to any age under about 18 months as a baby. They really are babies past one, and not quite toddlers. The baby room at a lot of nurseries goes to 18 months.
Personally I will continue to consider my almost four-year-old as my baby, and address her as such, for as long as I see fit. But I do know she's a kid really.

SlashBeef · 22/01/2023 22:01

Our youngest is nearly 3 and still called The Baby by everyone in our family. I imagine she'll take issue with it when she's 20 and still The Baby but thems the rules.

StopGrowingPlease · 22/01/2023 22:01

We call our 16 month old baby... he's just starting to work and isn't saying any words yet. He is a baby 🤷‍♀️

Xtraincome · 22/01/2023 22:01

I'm 36, now a mum, DM calls me her baby, both my DDs aged 5 and 8 are both my baby's. Term of endearment, OP.

So as not to drip feed I have not got any children hence why I think I may be BU.

You absolutely are being unreasonable!!

My 5 year old is still "my baby" though because he is! He's my youngest and will always be my baby!

sjxoxo · 22/01/2023 22:02

YABU. My baby is 1 & deffo still a baby!
i can see why someone calling their adult child their ‘baby’ is cringey but it is still technically ‘their baby’.. I think when you have a baby, the words ‘my baby’ almost take on another definition and it’s not about their age; it’s about the fact they’re ‘yours’. And that lasts all of life xx

Satsumaonaplate · 22/01/2023 22:02

Stay in your lane. When my children are adults they will still be my babies.

I'm guessing you are childless and simply don't understand the love and bond.

Parentandteacher · 22/01/2023 22:03

My baby is 6. I imagine at 16 Ill still be embarrassing them with it. YABU, it’s normal. My grandma used to call my mum her baby when my mum was in her 50s.

EezyOozy · 22/01/2023 22:04

I still call my 3 and 5 year olds “my baby”. They are my babies. They always will be 😍

gamerchick · 22/01/2023 22:04

My eldest is 27 and she's still my baby. As are all my kids. They'll always be my babies Grin

My DCs will be my babies til the day I die.
No matter what. That’s the point of mums

Galliano · 22/01/2023 22:08

I call my 21 year old DD my ‘baby’, primarily because she is younger than her 27 and 26 year old brothers who I call ‘the boys’, though, of course, they are all my babies. Thinking back to nursery days I think if I didn’t use their actual names I said I was collecting ‘the boys’ for the 3 years my sons were at nursery together and then said ‘my son’ for DS2 in his last year there and DD was always ‘my daughter’.

PurpleNebula84 · 22/01/2023 22:08

I'm 38 and my mum still calls me Baby Girl - I call my own DD who is nearly 6 Baby Girl too... She'll always be my baby, no matter how big and un-baby she is. I don't generally refer to her as "My baby" and "Baby Girl" is usually reserved for when it's just us.

I have 3 children and I know what you mean.
Most ‘normal’ 🤣 people would call them a baby until the child could walk fairly well. Then it’s a toddler. So up to around 18 months maybe.
Anyone still saying I need to pick my baby up from nursery when it’s 2 or 3 is just bonkers and falls into the category of ‘my child is 39 months’ etc.
No I don’t call my 13 year old my baby. She would die on the spot. She’s my teenager or daughter.

Hesma · 22/01/2023 22:09

My babies are 10 and 12

Plumbear2 · 22/01/2023 22:11

A 6 month old is still a tiny baby. I call my kids in their 20s and my teens my baby's, because they are my babies. My mum still calls me her baby. I still call my youngest my little one, he is 15. Get over it
