To be really pissed off about Nadhim Zahawi's tax affairs?

Am I the only one seething about this man? He is a disgrace to have avoided paying so much tax as an MP. And then he comes out and says he made a careless but not deliberate error and that's meant to wash? I could understand Joe Bloggs making an error when filling in their self assessment without an accountant (and then HMRC would incessantly hound and threaten them until error had been fixed and paid). But a multi millionaire saying this, is just plain insulting. He should be sacked with immediate affect and investigated immediately.

These double standards for those in government make me sick. We spend more time moaning about illegal immigrants being given bare minimum to live on, than these multi millionaires who are constantly trying to avoid tax. Counting down the days we can vote these morally void, charlatans out of power!

He's a Tory, that's what they do.

Actually I can think of another way this could be considered a "good news story" in that it's a story people could feel very happy to hear, at least it should make people very happy who...

don't like Tories
don't like NZ
don't like successful tax avoidance

It's even a "feel good" story if you can comfortably take delight in NZ's uncomfortable situation.

You really are determined to make this into a good news story.

Yes, good that Zahawi had been held to account, but the fact that this tax avoider was known to the authorities and yet was still allowed to be appointed Chancellor and thereby in charge of the tax authority that was investigating him is in no way good news.

Zahawi should not have been allowed to be in that position. A complicated offshore tax structure to deliberately avoid tax is not a mistake.

The only thing that would surprise me is if anyone's surprised

Through undeclared conflicts of interest, expenses scandals and appointments such as Vaccines Minister, Chancellor, Privy Counsellor and Party Chairman, he's always been very good at positioning himself where there are obvious behind-the-scenes opportunities to be had ... and more fool the selection committees for allowing him anywhere near them

He should resign now. Also who are the accounts responsible and how can they get away with ignoring professional standards like this? Dh used to work in personal tax for a big 4 and said no one he worked with there would ever have done this as it’s obvious HMRC would attribute the income to him if it were ever looked in to.

Would have thought this is against the Ministerial Code/Conduct in a Public Office?

No, I don't care. I also didn't care that some MPs drank wine with staff during Covid.
