To be really pissed off about Nadhim Zahawi's tax affairs?

Am I the only one seething about this man? He is a disgrace to have avoided paying so much tax as an MP. And then he comes out and says he made a careless but not deliberate error and that's meant to wash? I could understand Joe Bloggs making an error when filling in their self assessment without an accountant (and then HMRC would incessantly hound and threaten them until error had been fixed and paid). But a multi millionaire saying this, is just plain insulting. He should be sacked with immediate affect and investigated immediately.

These double standards for those in government make me sick. We spend more time moaning about illegal immigrants being given bare minimum to live on, than these multi millionaires who are constantly trying to avoid tax. Counting down the days we can vote these morally void, charlatans out of power!

And the fact that he was Chancellor of this country, in charge of the budget and balancing the books. It’s sickening. How could he sleep at night taking that job and waffling on about income tax etc knowing he’d done something dodgy? I don’t believe there was an honest mistake for even a second.

FatOaf · 22/01/2023 08:19

This is a man who claimed the cost of heating his stables on taxpayer-funded expenses. He has a history of "careless" mistakes that end up with our money in his pocket.

DowningStreetParty · 22/01/2023 08:25

i find it so depressing that in the olden days Tory sleaze and corruption would be a resigning matter once it became public.
How corrupt that these days the Tories just plough on regardless. Boris Johnson has lowered standards so outrageously and Rishi Sunak should be doing a clean up job but he’s turning a blind eye.
In tough economic times we as taxpayers are very vulnerable to corruption and nationally we cannot afford to tolerate it. It will encourage others to do the same.

scooterbee32 · 22/01/2023 08:29

@DowningStreetParty you're so right! These fuckers keep rewriting the rules and not being funny but if I owed £5k in taxes I'd probably
Be taken to court. Aside from the morality of it all, it's how they keep taking us all for mugs and keep on doing these awful things!

OP posts:
scooterbee32 · 22/01/2023 08:30

@FatOaf exactly! He should not be in government, end of!

OP posts:
scooterbee32 · 22/01/2023 08:30

@pjani nope, he's just spouting loads of bullshit because he got caught!

BananaBlue · 22/01/2023 08:32

As Chancellor he would have had influence/final say over tax rules, right?

why oh why did ppl vote for them. They are robbing the tax payer blind while folk get mad over £37 quid a week.

I even suspect most of the asylum hotels are just money siphoning to cronies.

Muffinsong · 22/01/2023 08:36

He lives just down the road from me. He’s a total sleeze. Pretty useless as a MP but seems to get voted in time and time again. He’s dodgy as, always has been always will be!!!

Muffinsong · 22/01/2023 08:38

Funnily enough we have two HUGE asylum hotels pop in the villages around us, I did wonder if he was getting kickback from them?!? It’s most odd placement, there is nothing here for them at all really, they all seem so lost! 😢

scooterbee32 · 22/01/2023 08:46

@BananaBlue everything in this country is a money syphoning exercise! From parts of the NHS to these asylum hotels. Our money is just being put back into the pockets of the extremely rich... that's why the country is so fucking broken! Because those 'running' the systems are doing it for money in their pockets and don't give a shit about the people!

OP posts:
BananaBlue · 22/01/2023 09:05

Agreed.

Yet the pop seems to be more worried about arrivals, scroungers etc.

The amount of noise over £30k earners going food bank is muted re Greensil, Mone, Zaharwi etc

We’ve lost so much.

purpledalmation · 22/01/2023 09:29

He needs to go. His defence.. whoops, I lost millions down the back of the sofa and forgot it.

VeggieSalsa · 22/01/2023 09:45

As a tax professional, it’s so frustrating that this story gets looked at the same as Sinak’s wife.

She was using legitimate tax law for its intended purpose. Zahawi was at best entering into a convoluted structure with a view to avoiding tax. It cannot possibly be a careless mistake as he took very deliberate steps to get into the structure, and I can’t believe he was not advised in doing so.

This is one of the few tax cases that hits the papers that legitimately warrants fury, but I honestly think we’ve all become a bit desensitised by all the unnecessarily sensationalised stories we hear.

VeggieSalsa · 22/01/2023 09:45

**Sunak

piedbeauty · 22/01/2023 09:46

Yup. Totally agree, op. He has accountants, financial advisors, etc. - there's no excuse for a massive 'mistake' fraud like that. He should be sacked immediately.

LlynTegid · 22/01/2023 09:49

This late payment, attempted evasion or whatever it was should be a matter for the courts. As happened with Ken Dodd.

Pending the court case the Tory whip should be suspended and Mr Zahawi not be a cabinet minister.

scooterbee32 · 22/01/2023 10:12

@VeggieSalsa thanks for commenting. If you're intelligent enough to be chancellor you should be able to file tax returns properly. Right, I'm pissed off enough and had my morning coffee I'm off to direct my anger at my Tory MP and see what bullshit excuse he writes back with this time!

OP posts:
KTheGrey · 22/01/2023 10:15

@scooterbee32 Spoilt for choice of what government criminality to be outraged over at the moment. I can't work out how it is possible for a decent electoral.system to result in our apparently picking rich cheats for the whole government.

Runnerduck34 · 22/01/2023 10:29

I agree ,he should resign.
Someone in his position and as an ex chancellor of the exchequer with access to professional accountancy advice should not be making "careless mistakes" on their tax return.
More than likely it was deliberate to avoid paying tax.
He should resign or after least have whip withdrawn pending an investigation.
It is depressing how low standards have sunk for MPs and how most people just accept it.

LaCerbiatta · 22/01/2023 10:35

But hey let's keep voting for them because Labour don't know what a woman is.....Stuff that will really have a significant impact to people's lives🙄

LadyWithLapdog · 22/01/2023 10:42

another corrupt and sleazy Tory in high post

scooterbee32 · 22/01/2023 11:05

@LaCerbiatta seriously this argument boils my piss! (Excuse the swearing today)! Especially when some privileged white Tory boy keeps bringing it up. If they were that fucking bothered about what a woman was they'd implement affordable childcare, sort the Family Court system out, make the streets safer for women, make companies fully disclose what staff are paid so we could see the unfairness of wages.

OP posts:
lljkk · 22/01/2023 11:23

How much tax has NZ avoided paying?

LadyWithLapdog · 22/01/2023 11:30

www.bbc.com/news/uk-politics-64360260.amp £4.8 million made of tax owed + 30% penalty. So several million ££ absentmindedly not paid. As if.

LadyWithLapdog · 22/01/2023 11:31

HMRC hounded me to pay back Child Benefit when I went over the income limit.
