To be completely demoralised by hot cross buns?

Been shopping earlier this week and noticed hot cross buns/mini eggs/crème eggs at the end of an aisle as a display in Morrisons, instantly made be furious, then again today in Tesco shelf's of hot cross buns in the bakery.

Give us a break please, I haven't even been paid since 20th December and still have until the 28th to be paid again. I'm absolutely skint from Christmas. Used £100 of savings to put the heating on with £280 already expected to come out of my pay for electric. And these greedy bastard have already started with the Easter shit. Its not even the end of January and all ready the Easter prep is starting.

It's exhausting. I'm so low right now, so broke with so many house problems adding up. Seeing those hot cross buns has sent me west. It's just relentless right now. And Tesco was freezing. Freezing. The poor workers were freezing why? It's a billion pound company and they've turned their heating off?? Because the greedy greedy bastards don't want any losses even at the detriment of their staff. Honestly feels like end of days in the UK right now.

AIBU? Or is seeing Easter stuff in January an absolute screw you to the average struggling Brit.

Do some people REALLY not think ahead/plan/prep/use their loaf! 😑 I am constantly facepalming at people like that.

Clearly yes. I don't think it's unreasonable to go to Tesco the day before shrove Tuesday or even on the day and be able to buy a lemon. Or an Easter egg the day before Easter, not when they've been around since Jan.

What's going on with the inflation on them anyway? I'm sure they used to be 1 or 2 for a penny?

😀

HolyZarquonsSingingSeals · 22/01/2023 05:40

I always find seasonal crap on the shelves vaguely irritating, but nobody has to buy it.

madeyemoody · 21/01/2023 23:07

I had no idea hot cross buns were all year. I go to the same shop every week and never seen them? Don't know about Tesco I've never been in that particular shop but the Morrisons is my local and never noticed them except for Easter.

I know crème eggs are common same as mini eggs but there was a display, an effort had been made to group them together.

I'm probably reaching for things to justify my anger at the state of living right now. Like I said it just feels relentless...

Just walk past them and roll your eyes if you must.

dinosaurcookie · 22/01/2023 05:59

Yes, I can imagine it is irritating if you've just got through the expense of Christmas and you feel that another expensive 'holiday' is on its way already. It is not unusual for the supermarkets to do this but I see why you feel anxious/angry about it. Hope things get better Op and payday is in sight! 💐

Athenen0ctua · 22/01/2023 06:29

Hot cross buns are about a quid a pack and you can buy less of something else you would have eaten instead. An Easter egg is about £3 a child and they will still be there after January and February paydays.

Ifailed · 22/01/2023 07:43

Personally I’m fuming, fuming I tell ya, that my local Asda has ice cream on sale IN WINTER! It’s -3 degrees. I don’t want to buy ice cream, so no one else should be allowed to either.

Hear, Hear! I walked down an aisle in my local Sainsbury's and they were selling nappies, my two boys are 29 & 31, I don't need nappies any more!

PortiasBiscuit · 22/01/2023 07:46

Easter really doesn’t need to be expensive surely? Daffodils at a pound a bunch and three Cadbury eggs for a fiver?
Hardly on a scale with Christmas.

🎶 Give ‘em to your daughters
Give ‘em to your sons
One a penny two a penny
Hot cross buns 🎶

No idea why people are being clueless shit heads on this thread,

Agreed, it’s a sport for some people I guess.

MissyB1 · 22/01/2023 07:52

OP I get it. We are only just getting over the Christmas spending and the shops immediately want to remind us to start spending for Easter. Fine if you have bottomless pockets.

CafeCremeMerci · 22/01/2023 08:06

I do think it spoils the 'season' when it just goes from one 'event' straight to the next & there's no 'normal' in between.

I get the retailers are businesses just trying to make money, which in turn pays for staff etc.

@madeyemoody I'm glad you've calmed down! I'm sorry things are tight and this feels like more/extended pressure. But now you've seen the lighter side, this years tesco extra fruit HCB are really really nice, much better than previously.

LittleLantern123 · 22/01/2023 08:09

I totally get it OP, big companies like Tesco etc are based on squeezing every last penny of profit out of their customers (they hope you'll buy Easter eggs now, eat them and buy more)
When things are tight on a personal level you really feel it and a trip to the supermarket can be overwhelmingly depressing - every aisle becomes 'here's what you could have had' and extras like Easter treats can be a kick in the stomach.
I wish we could go back to the days of little greengrocers, butchers and a milkman etc, I know it won't happen and I'm living in fantasy land but sadly profit always trumps people now.

Exactly, it's nothing like Christmas!

Squamata · 22/01/2023 08:16

They have shelves earmarked for seasonal promotions. After Christmas they might have some clearance Christmas stuff on them, new year health stuff, veganuary etc. Then valentine's and Easter is the next thing on the marketing calendar so they put that stuff out. Then on to summer BBQs etc.

Easter eggs have a really long shelf life so they can go out early. They wouldn't put hcbs out if no one bought them.

I can understand it's a difficult financial time but really they're just finding stuff to put on their shelves.

Eranzer · 22/01/2023 08:17

I had no idea hot cross buns were an Easter thing! We have them all year round.

I think you're being a bit rose tinted there. Smaller shops basically require someone (women) to stay home and shop regularly in small amounts, they're incompatible with women working.

Plus plenty of smaller shops in smaller places knew their customers had no alternative and did price gouging. That's why the co op started!

So the cross on top doesn't remind you of the crucifixion, every time you're about to bite into those juicy raisins?

Squamata · 22/01/2023 08:20

I sometimes imagine if Jesus came back and you had to explain hot cross buns to him

whatisforteamum · 22/01/2023 08:26

Ooh you just cheered me up.
Warm toasty spicy hot cross buns. Also know Easter and spring are a hop skip and a jump away is great.
Sorry you are fed up though.

yousmellnice · 22/01/2023 08:28

It helps people spread the cost so no I'm not mad at it. I might buy the kids easter eggs early this year after my next pay check.

Why do you think they have a cross on them?

StickofVeg · 22/01/2023 08:34

Shops only give shelf space to what sells. Why blame the shop?

PetitPorpoise · 22/01/2023 08:34

This is not new.

I worked in Woolworths as a teenager in the 00s and every year, we'd close up on Christmas eve, take all the Christmas stuff down and put the first delivery of Mini Eggs and Creme Eggs out in the places where the Selection Boxes had been.

CecilyP · 22/01/2023 08:35

CallieQ · 22/01/2023 01:14

They do it every year

They do it every day! The only day there’s no hot cross buns is if other shoppers have cleared the shelves. If money’s tight, supermarkets often have hot cross buns in the reduced items which is fine as you’re going to toast them anyway!
