To be completely demoralised by hot cross buns?

Been shopping earlier this week and noticed hot cross buns/mini eggs/crème eggs at the end of an aisle as a display in Morrisons, instantly made be furious, then again today in Tesco shelf's of hot cross buns in the bakery.

Give us a break please, I haven't even been paid since 20th December and still have until the 28th to be paid again. I'm absolutely skint from Christmas. Used £100 of savings to put the heating on with £280 already expected to come out of my pay for electric. And these greedy bastard have already started with the Easter shit. Its not even the end of January and all ready the Easter prep is starting.

It's exhausting. I'm so low right now, so broke with so many house problems adding up. Seeing those hot cross buns has sent me west. It's just relentless right now. And Tesco was freezing. Freezing. The poor workers were freezing why? It's a billion pound company and they've turned their heating off?? Because the greedy greedy bastards don't want any losses even at the detriment of their staff. Honestly feels like end of days in the UK right now.

AIBU? Or is seeing Easter stuff in January an absolute screw you to the average struggling Brit.

YABU I have quite a few eggs to buy. Chocolate prices have gone up and we do a lot of Easter baking so buy gradually. Have you seen the price of mini eggs now.

Easter always goes out from Boxing Day.

DonnaBanana · 21/01/2023 23:26

What feels relentless? The fact there are special days and celebrations spaced around the year? The fact there are tasty looking products for sale in a supermarket? You’re not being forced by anyone to buy these things till you’re paid.

I don't know what the OP meant exactly but personally I find it relentless that retailers have this whole Christmas/Valentines/Easter/Spring/Summer/School Year/Halloween/Bonfire Night/Christmas (and whatever I've missed out) retail thing where they try and sell as much shite to us as they can. I understand why they do it but it's still relentless and shite.

Pixiedust1234 · 21/01/2023 23:40

I'm late to the thread but I buy hot cross buns all year round as I prefer them to teacakes. I go to asda, sainsburys, tesco, aldi or co-op so quite a few retailers do them.

Agree with you about the large easter eggs though. I am assuming they are last years stock with use by dates before Easter, same as the Christmas mince pies.

TheBigWangTheory · 21/01/2023 23:49

I don't get your point. Hot cross buns in the shops impacts you and your finances how?
Seriously, not following here at all.

BethDuttonsTwin · 21/01/2023 23:56

I like seeing seasonal products come into the shops. Gives some structure to the day to day dreariness that months like January and February can be.

Msgrieves · 22/01/2023 00:01

For me they have spoiled it all, its just a fucking relentless treadmill, so I just can't be arsed. Sorry kids (they are older).

Msgrieves · 22/01/2023 00:03

No idea why people are being clueless shit heads on this thread,

No idea why people are being clueless shit heads on this thread,

What the fuck are you talking about? OP is making no sense, and neither are you.

So there are hot cross buns or mini eggs in the shop in Jan. If you don't want them, you don't buy them. They don't make the slightest difference to your life. What are you whining about?

Sisiwawa · 22/01/2023 00:15

I was in a massive Sainsburys, with loads of clothes, house stuff etc, it was also FREEZING! I knew they've turned the heating off to save a few quid, how do they expect customers to browse when it felt almost as cold as outside?!

Whadda · 22/01/2023 00:15

I love HCBs. Last bought a pack two weeks before Christmas, along with some Christmas decorations.

I don’t understand your ire, OP. While I emphasise with you, or anyone, finding life a financial struggle at the moment, nobody is forcing you to buy HCBs, or Lindt bunnies, or Easter eggs, or bunches of tulips.

Supermarkets usually sell expensive champagne year-round. Are you furious about that too?

midsomermurderess · 22/01/2023 00:18

You already have enough on your plate before worrying about hot cross buns and Easter eggs. Each day has enough trouble of its own and all that.

TheOrigRights · 22/01/2023 00:19

The basic normal ones are now available all year round, but now they have brought out the chocolate/apple/cheese etc

CHEESE? Boak.
I am a HCB purist and we only eat them on Good Friday. It's a treat to have once a year.
I didn't know you could get them all year round and have only noticed them in the last couple of weeks as they are more heavily marketed from Jan until Good Friday/Easter.
I don't feel any pressure to buy them, I just walk on and buy what I want.

pigsinoodies · 22/01/2023 00:22

To be fair, despite my comments about the relentless seasonal retail thing, I was a bit pissed off about the local shops not having mince pies when I fancied them. There seemed to be very low stocks and 'only' from start of December until maybe a day or so before Christmas. I've always scoffed (!) at mince pies in October or February but actually buying them on Jan 2nd shouldn't be impossible like it was this year.

midsomermurderess · 22/01/2023 00:22

Why bring this up now?

midsomermurderess · 22/01/2023 00:22

Sorry, wrong thread.

TheOrigRights · 22/01/2023 00:22

What IS annoying is when you can't get a lemon a couple of days before Shrove Tuesday, or a pumpkin a few days before Halloween etc because they've all sold out.

No pumpkins on the 28th Oct but aisles full of Xmas stuff.

YellowAndGreenToBeSeen · 22/01/2023 00:25

Whilst I hear you OP, you can exercise a ‘no ta’ choice….

It’s been decades since I’ve eaten a HCB or an Easter Egg. I genuinely couldn’t tell you how many - 20 or 30 years.

Just because they are there, doesn’t mean you have to buy them.

Todaynotalways · 22/01/2023 00:28

@madeyemoody I hear you Madey, Easter is another signifyer of another expense on the horizon. I understand.

I don't feel like that, personally. I see them as a sign of the end of stupid cold winter... But I totally get why it feels stressful, esp if you haven't been paid since before the last big expense.

Aposterhasnoname · 22/01/2023 00:29

Personally I’m fuming, fuming I tell ya, that my local Asda has ice cream on sale IN WINTER! It’s -3 degrees. I don’t want to buy ice cream, so no one else should be allowed to either.

Kitkatcatflap · 22/01/2023 00:35

Calm down love - no one is strong arming you to buy hot cross buns. Don't worry they'll be re-stocked. A good many haven't been paid since December we're all a bit 'broke n bunless'

HeavenIsAHalfpipe · 22/01/2023 00:54

YABU. As some others have said seeing the Spring and Easter stuff in is a lovely reminder that these dark dank freezing fog, slushy, moody days will be over soon.

Now what annoys me is people who complain they can't get any Easter Eggs the day before Easter Sunday, and act all faux shocked when people suggest it MAY have been a good idea to have bought them a few weeks ago. Confused And that it MAY have been a good idea to have bought pumpkins in early to mid October and not waited til the 28th! Confused And it MAY have been a good idea to have bought a jif lemon some weeks ago and put it in the cupboard (or bought a real one a week before Pancake day.) Confused

Do some people REALLY not think ahead/plan/prep/use their loaf! 😑 I am constantly facepalming at people like that. ^

They do it every year
