To use Chatgpt to make me popular on Mumsnet

I asked Chatgpt to write a post for Mumsnet that would get lots of comments.

This is what it said!!!!

See images.

YABU - the post chatgpt suggested is not a great post and even is quite moronic and patronising
YANBU - let us indeed all discuss meals at length

I want to stress that this is not meant to be a confrontational or divisive post, but rather a forum for open and respectful discussion. oooh that will get people's backs up, a lot of people don't like being policed like that

Meltedcheeses · 21/01/2023 18:53

@noblegiraffe yes the machine has been programmed to only ever be helpful and polite. I asked it to write a rude and unhelpful reply to a post and it told me off and said it would never be rude and unhelpful and that also I shouldn't be. Which I thought was quite rude and unhelpful tbh.

@asblindasabat it is artificial intelligence. It was trained using a lot of publicly available data and it also learns on an ongoing basis. But it is very vague on anything that happened from about mid 2021.

It can remember stuff you've told it in the same chat but not if you start a new chat.

I always thank it and it says "You're welcome. I'm really pleased you like the post."

What I like best is it takes feedback. I asked it to write something and it did, then I said could you write that with a bit more of an enthusiastic tone and also avoid stating obvious points and make sure you cover this topic and it did it.

I asked it how it works but it didn't tell me much!

Chatgpt.

Have you posted this before I seem to remember it from somewhere. 😁😁

Surely if you actually want a lot of responses, you just post on the Feminist board that you think Nicola Sturgeon has it dead right and you don’t understand why everyone disagrees with her on self-ID. Then sit back with the popcorn…

It's already been done.

The AI wrote reasonable one off posts but couldn't maintain a consistent position over an evolving thread.

So as you can see it's just like a real activist 😂

I think it just tends to write things that are quite... boring. I thought the same when I prompted it to write other things previously. I just tried asking it for a Mumsnet post and it came up with:.

Help needed with toddler's picky eating habits

Hi all,

I hope you're all keeping well. I'm currently at my wit's end with my toddler's fussy eating habits. He's always been a bit choosy but recently it's gotten worse and I'm struggling to know what to do.

He only wants to eat a small selection of foods and refuses to try anything new. I've tried offering the same meal multiple times, offering a variety of healthy options, and even hiding veggies in his food, but nothing seems to be working.

I'm worried about his nutrition and I don't want to turn meal times into a battle. Has anyone else gone through this? If so, any tips or advice would be greatly appreciated.

Thanks in advance.

Which is perfectly comprehensible and plausible, but just really bland.

You know you can refine it- ask it to make it chatty or funny

noblegiraffe · 21/01/2023 19:31

You can't ask it to include swearing, it say no. Which is disappointing.

Oh god yes, that would be carnage Grin

So it's basically a smart, bowdlerising plagiarism engine?

No, the point is that it is not plagiarism. It writes its own stuff based on key words etc. So if you use plagiarism checkers there won't be a match. It doesn't make it original thought, though.

Viviennemary · 21/01/2023 20:44

Sounds really boring. Who wants to read about recipes.

these are a good mix of responses other posters have used from the application

I asked it to write me an exciting post and got this:

Title: "The Adventure of a Lifetime: Exploring the Mysterious Gem Island!"

Post: Hi Mumsnetters! I had to share an incredible experience my family and I recently had. We embarked on a thrilling adventure to the mysterious Gem Island, and it was absolutely mind-blowing!

Imagine setting foot on an uncharted island, surrounded by shimmering turquoise waters and lush tropical forests. Our journey began with a heart-pounding speedboat ride, bouncing over waves as we held on tight with excitement and anticipation.

As we arrived at the island, we were greeted by a local guide who led us on a mesmerizing trek through dense jungle. The air was filled with the symphony of exotic birds and the vibrant hues of flowers we'd never seen before. Our kids were wide-eyed with wonder!

But that was just the beginning. Our guide then took us to a hidden cave system, illuminated only by the glow of our headlamps. We felt like real-life explorers, marveling at the stunning stalagmites and stalactites adorning the cavern walls. It was truly breathtaking!

As if that wasn't enough, we discovered a secret waterfall hidden deep within the forest. We couldn't resist the temptation to take a dip in the crystal-clear waters, surrounded by an atmosphere of pure tranquility. It felt like we were living in a dream!

To top off our adventure, we were treated to a traditional feast prepared by the island's locals. We indulged in mouthwatering delicacies that awakened our taste buds to a whole new world of flavors.

In the end, our journey to Gem Island was more than just an adventure; it was a bonding experience that created memories to last a lifetime. Our family felt a sense of unity and wonder, connecting with nature in ways we never thought possible.

So if you're looking for an extraordinary escapade, I highly recommend exploring the hidden gems of our world. You never know what wonders await!

Let me know if you have any questions and happy adventuring, fellow Mumsnetters!

I don't think the responses would be great if I posted that pile of rubbish!

I mean it's a bit weird addressing everyone as 'mums' and the bit about sharing secrets. But aside from that it is the type of post that gets lots of comments.

That sounds like something a Primary school DC would write when instructed to use lots of exciting adjectives in their work!

noblegiraffe · 21/01/2023 16:52

This one would definitely kick off

"Hey Mumsnetters,

I'm currently pregnant with my first child and my partner and I are trying to decide on a name. We've narrowed it down to three options: Tom, Henry, and Balonz.

Which name do you think would be the best fit for our baby? Do you have any experiences with any of these names? Are there any pros or cons you can think of? Would love to hear your thoughts and opinions!

Thanks in advance!

[Your name]"

That's hilarious!

This is what it's given me:

"Family Dilemma: DH's Food Obsession, Well-Meaning MIL, and DC's Behavior – Need Your Wisdom!"

Hi, Mumsnetters,

Hope you're all well! I've got a family situation that's a tad overwhelming, and I'd really appreciate your insights.

First, my DH has a big appetite, and it's starting to worry me. To add to the mix, my dear mother-in-law (MIL), who's a gem, lives with us and may be spoiling our DC just a bit too much. The result? DC's behavior is a rollercoaster, and I suspect MIL's indulgence might be fueling DH's cravings.

If you've dealt with a similar situation, where a well-meaning relative complicates family dynamics, please share your experiences and advice. I'm all ears and seeking harmony.

Also, if you've navigated the challenges of DC's behavior due to overindulgence, your tips would be invaluable. I'm just trying to keep the peace here.

I'm so thankful for your support and the wonderful Mumsnet community! 😊

There was a thread just the other day condemning people who start sentences with 'As a mother' - so that's an instant fail on the popularity front! Imagine the offence this would cause - what about the childless women with busy lives and an appetite?! They can be busy too.
