I asked Chatgpt to write a post for Mumsnet that would get lots of comments.

I want to stress that this is not meant to be a confrontational or divisive post, but rather a forum for open and respectful discussion. oooh that will get people's backs up, a lot of people don't like being policed like that

@noblegiraffe yes the machine has been programmed to only ever be helpful and polite. I asked it to write a rude and unhelpful reply to a post and it told me off and said it would never be rude and unhelpful and that also I shouldn't be. Which I thought was quite rude and unhelpful tbh.

@asblindasabat it is artificial intelligence. It was trained using a lot of publicly available data and it also learns on an ongoing basis. But it is very vague on anything that happened from about mid 2021.

It can remember stuff you've told it in the same chat but not if you start a new chat.

I always thank it and it says "You're welcome. I'm really pleased you like the post."

What I like best is it takes feedback. I asked it to write something and it did, then I said could you write that with a bit more of an enthusiastic tone and also avoid stating obvious points and make sure you cover this topic and it did it.

I asked it how it works but it didn't tell me much!

The AI wrote reasonable one off posts but couldn't maintain a consistent position over an evolving thread.

So as you can see it's just like a real activist 😂

You know you can refine it- ask it to make it chatty or funny

You can't ask it to include swearing, it say no. Which is disappointing.

So it's basically a smart, bowdlerising plagiarism engine?

No, the point is that it is not plagiarism. It writes its own stuff based on key words etc. So if you use plagiarism checkers there won't be a match. It doesn't make it original thought, though.

Sounds really boring. Who wants to read about recipes.

I mean it's a bit weird addressing everyone as 'mums' and the bit about sharing secrets. But aside from that it is the type of post that gets lots of comments.

That sounds like something a Primary school DC would write when instructed to use lots of exciting adjectives in their work!
