Do you feel silly going for a walk by yourself without a dog?!

I love walking, quite like my own company, but I always feel silly going for a walk by myself! It would be much easier if I had a dog! Does anyone else feel like this or is it fine to go for a long walk by yourself?!

It is completely fine to go a walk on our own because you enjoy it! Good for the body and the mind.

I however do have 2 dogs and I feel guilty of I go a walk without them 😅

LizzieW1969 · 21/01/2023 13:51

I enjoy walking on my own, as it’s a break from our busy household (myself, DH and 2 DDs of 13 and 10). It would be a shame to miss out on that because of feeling self-conscious about not having a dog, when I don’t have one. Though 2 of my 3 cats followed me for part of my walk recently! 😂

FWIW, I think the vast majority of people don’t register whether people they don’t know are walking on their own or whether or not they have a dog. I’m certainly not bothered!

Why are people so awful?. One woman has expressed a concern that a number of others say they share share.

Why be so dismissive and condescending about it?. I'm sure you other things that bother you that OP would sail through, but even if than's not the case why put her down? Do you really need to express your superior ability to go for a walk so strongly? Does that make you feel good?

Not awful, just a difference of opinion (which is allowed). If OP saw me walking alone, maybe OP judges me and thinks it strange. That's ok.

If you ask on a public forum, you're going to get opinions - and some won't be the same as yours. Why is that so hard to understand?

But surely getting a dog so you don't feel silly walking alone is not a good reason? Get a dog because you want one, and can properly look after it - not because you want to go for a walk.

Agreed, hence why the key part of my sentence was ‘everyone that wants one..’ 😊

Maireas · 21/01/2023 14:55

@BCxx But you said in your earlier post that you look at people walking without dogs and wonder what has made them go out for a walk! I hope it's been answered for you, some of us enjoy walking, want the exercise and fresh air and don't like dogs.
If you do, great!

CharitySchmarity · 21/01/2023 15:22

Feel silly? I need to go for a walk by myself most days or I'd be climbing the walls! I'd love a dog, but when solitude is what I'm after, I'd rather not have a dog with me as they tend to attract people's interest.

Scoobydoobywho · 21/01/2023 15:24

I go for a walk sometimes with friends sometimes on my own. When on my own I wear my headphones and listen to music. Though I am careful not to start singing as that would get me funny looks.

Benjispruce4 · 21/01/2023 17:40

Ok so I was out late morning for an hour and a half with my dog. Lost count of the number of lone walkers without dogs.

Benjispruce4 · 21/01/2023 17:42

I should think with wfh being more popular and prevalent, lots of people just go out to stretch their legs

Coffeecreme · 21/01/2023 18:10

we visited BIL and introduced him, or went for a walk in the woods behind him, withour dog, he said he likes to walk there, and i commented people might give him strange looks
would you give a man strange looks for walking in the woods alone?
or are the woods a step too far for lonesome walking

Oakbeam · 21/01/2023 18:15

I often walk alone.

I have sometimes set out with a cat, but never returned with one.

Mimilamore · 21/01/2023 18:33

Not at all, nobody cares, I listen to saved up podcasts and in my own world anyway...

CeriB82 · 21/01/2023 18:53

What an odd thought.

im always out walking, most ofvthe time alone. I hike mountains alone. Much prefer it.

i walk with a friend at night through the quarries/countryside or a lower mountain.i have never thought of it being weird

I get more enjoyment going with the dog but I can keep up a better pace without him. He's a sniffing nightmare. I never feel silly. No one even looks twice.

I have this too. Love walking the dogs but they’re getting older and don’t want to
walk as far as I do, plus we have the constant stop and sniff. I take them for a quick walk then head out for miles by myself. Headphones and a good podcast and it can be my favourite time of day.

Yes but there is a lot of shaming of people on here - mental barriers, sad, ridiculous etc. It's not necessary.

Ikeasucks · 21/01/2023 19:30

Have a dog now but I’ve always gone on walks on my own - love it

No, I sometimes think it would be nice to have company. My choice would be feline not canine. Then I see dog walkers scooping the poop and feel glad o do t have a dog!

There's this old lady near me that walks with her cat! Not on a lead or anything, she just goes for a walk and the cat follows her. Actually I'm not sure if its actually her cat or not, she just told me it likes to walk with her.
