Do you feel silly going for a walk by yourself without a dog?!

I love walking, quite like my own company, but I always feel silly going for a walk by myself! It would be much easier if I had a dog! Does anyone else feel like this or is it fine to go for a long walk by yourself?!

This is crazy. I can't believe anyone would think like this. Why would walking only be something you do with a dog??!

I know!

I love solo walks in the countryside or park. I used to as a child too and remember a couple of school friends being amazed that I used to go for walks on my own. I am astonished that this is a question though!

QuertyGirl · 21/01/2023 11:43

None of you ever walk to the shop? To the park? School? Anywhere?

We're living in WallE

blueskylie · 21/01/2023 11:43

My mind is blown that there's people who think it's strange for people who don't have dogs to go for a walk. Never occurred to me.

I don't have a dog and I walk a lot.

girlfriend44 · 21/01/2023 11:43

Yabu to even ask this question.

OllytheCollie · 21/01/2023 11:44

As someone who has recently spent the best part of two years training a collie not to be an asshole believe me you can feel pretty stupid with a dog on a walk

MintJulia · 21/01/2023 11:45

Absolutely not.

I alternate running days and walking days. Makes me feel great, clears my head, means I have contact with my dog-walking neighbours, uses up calories, gives me an appetite. 😊

It's going somewhere without a car

ShakespearesBlister · 21/01/2023 11:48

I got a bus out to the countryside Monday then walked for 11 miles. Not a dog in sight.

blueskylie · 21/01/2023 11:56

@QuertyGirl exactly. How do these people think non dog owners get from place to place?

WetBandits · 21/01/2023 11:57

Not silly, but I do prefer the company of my dog or another person!

2bazookas · 21/01/2023 12:01

After 40+ years of dog ownership we have none now, and I agree that going for a dogless walk still doesn't feel right. To the extent that we now walk dogs regularly for a dog rescue charity and for any friends whose dog we can borrow ... just missed that companionship and interaction so much.

ZED55JAX0 · 21/01/2023 12:04

Yes I do! But I don’t know why! as others have said how do you know if someone is going on a leisurely walk as opposed to going somewhere or meeting someone!
I have dogs and feel much more at ease and normal walking them! But on my own I can walk faster and more easily as no sniffing/stopping poo picking etc

RobinaCherry · 21/01/2023 12:04

My neighbour has 3 dogs which she walks twice a day. She says I'm always welcome to join them. I'd rather go on my own tbh, so I do. The dogs are a nuisance as they stop and sniff every 2 mins and then there's the stopping to pick up poo.

So no. Walking alone is my preference.

SpongeBob2022 · 21/01/2023 12:05

I really love a walk on my own. I mostly use the time to listen to a podcast. Not sure why I should feel silly.

leithreas · 21/01/2023 12:07

I have dogs so don't really 'go for a walk' alone but do walk to get places alone. Where I walk the dogs usually is literally a round route to nowhere, no one walking there is doing it to get anywhere but the vast majority of people I see are lone walkers without dogs. I never think anything of it, it's a totally normal pursuit.

kwetu · 21/01/2023 12:18

Take a camera!

mogsrus · 21/01/2023 12:20

Nope. Often go for an hour or so, love it, just me & thoughts.

ThePoshUns · 21/01/2023 12:21

No. I love walking alone with a podcast. Find it very relaxing.

I get more enjoyment going with the dog but I can keep up a better pace without him. He's a sniffing nightmare. I never feel silly. No one even looks twice.

I have a sniffy dog too, can walk more briskly when I leave her at home.

ClemDanFango · 21/01/2023 12:23

Literally no one gives a fuck what other people are doing in their day to day lives. Unless you’re a serial killer.

Toddlerteaplease · 21/01/2023 12:57

No, I sometimes think it would be nice to have company. My choice would be feline not canine. Then I see dog walkers scooping the poop and feel glad o do t have a dog!

Lelophants · 21/01/2023 12:57

I’ve never had a dog and I love walks! Never occurred to me to be weird

flabbygoldfish · 21/01/2023 13:20

Walking without a dog, or dogs nearby, can mean to get to see more wildlife as they have not been scared off.

If you are that unsure or silly just take a camera, no one will think you are weird then.

helloelsie · 21/01/2023 13:39

No. Lots of people walk alone in. The woods where I live. Try to care less what others think and just do it

oversized · 21/01/2023 13:42

walk 5 miles daily as a mode of transport. weekends, i walk 3/4 miles both days for exercise and a change of scene - around park and local residential areas. no dog. walking anywhere by yourself is normal. it's never crossed my mind that it's odd that i do nor do i think that if i see other walkers alone.
