Pinching stuff from hotel rooms/villas

Januaryisjustaweirdmonth · 19/01/2023 21:22

Do you do it? Is it acceptable, is it illegal? I actually have no idea.
Would you take bath soaps/bubbles etc, loo rolls, towels, a robe?
Just curious really
I’ve always taken the little bottles/soaps with me when I’ve left somewhere I’ve stayed and thought nothing of it.
Do people take more though and is that illegal actually?

No hotel hairdryer has been as good as the one I have at home, and depending on the trip even if I know there's one there I'll take my own if I have room in my luggage.

You're really posh @Sparklingbrook . I usually just take my favourite coffee. It's instant but it is Nescafe Alta Rica.

@Dummycrusher my opinion is very important. I think it is very sad if you think yours is irrelevant but still felt compelled to treat us to it. That's why I suggested you lacked imagination.

That is a non-sequitur. Stop trying so hard.

Rhaych2003 · 22/01/2023 20:00

Don’t be a tea leaf! Karma may come round and bite you on the back side one day, stealing is stealing

I never have to try too hard @Dummycrusher.

ExasperatedbyJanuary · 22/01/2023 20:27

@Dummycrusher is yet to explain why she is so against people consuming the consumables that are included in the price of the room. Maybe someone needs to try harder?!

@woodhill apart from the towelling slippers my husband loves the propelling pencils with the rubber on the end from the Hotel Majestic, Barcelona, that we stay in quite a bit. They still do them.

Good on him, you can never have too much stationery😀

RockingMyFiftiesNot · 22/01/2023 20:39

Anything that you could have reasonably used up during your stay you are permitted to take away I think (mini toiletries, biscuits) as you have paid for those.
Large bottles of toiletries is taking the mickey and definitely not bathrobes. I'd consider that theft, as you've paid for the use of them not to purchase them. I

One time we stayed in a hotel which had slippers en route to a self catering place I'd forgotten to pack my slippers and knew the apartment wasn't carpeted. I asked at reception if I could buy the slippers and they said just take them as they aren't washed & reused. Unlike the robes.

Pedallleur · 22/01/2023 20:40

Got to love that people have the money to stay in a hotel and decide to be petty thieves. The small toiletries and the biscuits are there to be used but robes etc are not. If you go in M&S cafe do you take the sugar, salt, cutlery etc. I know people do but I can afford some sugar or a towel.

Cult Pens or eBay has plenty. Do we need notepads saying Hotel name etc

KimberleyClark · 22/01/2023 20:49

I did once stay in a horrible place with a hairdryer attached to the wall and a plastic hose thing. I managed to melt the hose the first time I used it. I have very thick hair which takes a while to dry.

KimberleyClark · 22/01/2023 20:52

Also stayed in places where there were large bottles of Balmain and Temple Spa toiletries. Didn’t take them though I would have liked to.

namechangetheworld · 22/01/2023 20:54

Blossomtoes · 22/01/2023 16:32

I’ve seen it and it disgusts me.

Disgusts you? Get a grip 😂

Sparklingbrook · 22/01/2023 20:56

I've known hairdryers attached to the wall in gyms but not a hotel.

TheKeatingFive · 22/01/2023 20:57

Some hotels have hairdryers attached to the wall in the bathroom. I hate drying my hair in there!

Newlifestartingatlast · 22/01/2023 20:59

I used to spend about 30% of my nights in hotels each year with work. I Ve always taken things that are complimentary- mini toiletries, sewing packs, shaving packs etc . I’ve used them for guests at home or when kids used to go away as I always took my own toiletries. I retired 5 years ago and still hav last few left . I’ve taken complimentary food/drinks where I’ve not used or removed in morning into a drawer so I get full compliant of refills each day, 🤷🏼‍♀️. Ive taken onto plane on way ho,e as snacks or used to take, say teabags, to countries that don’t supply tea bags in rooms (Spain etc) . I also took slippers as these are thrown away by hotels if opened and I’ve used them myself as travel slippers or in relatives houses I go to often etc. I’ve even got some here for some regular visitors.

but no never towels, wraps etc . These are not complimentary and it is theft.

I do have a first class airplane blanket though - I put it into my bag at a transfer as I was so cold and had quite a long layover and dozed with it over me in the lounge. I then forgot I’d put it back n my bag and came home with it.

Penguinsaregreat · 22/01/2023 21:00

Most hairdryers I’ve seen have been in a drawer or wardrobe.
It annoys me when there are not enough coat hangers so stealing them!

Penguinsaregreat · 22/01/2023 21:00

Stop stealing

Sparklingbrook · 22/01/2023 20:56

It’s very common- but most.y ones in bathrooms

limitedperiodonly · 22/01/2023 21:02

I've never stayed in a hotel where hairdryer isn't screwed to the wall.

Some of you must stay in some really fancy places

Sparklingbrook · 22/01/2023 21:05

Using a hairdryer attached to the wall in a hotel bathroom would not work for me, glad I’ve not seen it. 😄

Longdarkcloud · 22/01/2023 21:05

I’ve taken only the stuff that is regularly renewed and which ought to be disposed of when the room is prepared for a new guest. Eg hand soaps, disposable shoe cleaner, shower cap. Anything else is in my opinion strictly off limits and stealing.

Dummycrusher · 22/01/2023 21:08

ExasperatedbyJanuary · 22/01/2023 20:27

I have already explained it a few times upthread. I'm not against it, I simply don't understand why anyone can be bothered when the stuff is very often shite quality and comes in fiddly little amounts. The environmental impact isn't exactly appealing either.

Newlifestartingatlast · 22/01/2023 21:12

I never use toiletries from large opened containers no matter how posh they are. THe spouts can harbour bacteria from previous user as can outside of bottle - don’t want to wash from a bottle handled by a previous guest whose been touching the bottle to wash his arse.
maybe I’m a bit OCD but I think it’s scam for hotels to claim there’s posh toiletries and then use a communal hand pump spot bottle . But I also realise the environmental consequences of all those little bottles.

I know public toilets are the same but they’re not hand push pump normally - they’re a side press.

Newlifestartingatlast · 22/01/2023 21:17

Blossomtoes · 20/01/2023 20:11

I don’t understand taking tea bags and coffee. They never supply enough for use in the room, let alone to take away.

I only drink tea- would simply call reception if I wanted more tea bags . Never known a hotel here or anywhere in the world refuse.
I used to take the sachets of coffee and hot chocolate as great for picnics, or at work when I had a visitor who wanted coffee . Very useful

When we used to go to Spain in the 60s and 70s the people we went with always snaffled a shed load of food from the breakfast buffet for lunch.

Utterly embarrassing.

This.

Regardless of whether it’s a breakfast buffet or an all you can eat lunch/dinner buffet, it’s literally that. Just breakfast, lunch or dinner. Anyone filling Tupperware/sandwich bags with food for later is embarrassing themselves.
