bruise from dentist

Hi all. I'm a bit worried as I went to the dentist to have 2 fillings. When he gave me the injection I started wondering why the chair was shaking before realising it was me. They offered me water but I was shaking so much by then I slopped it everywhere. Complete uncontrollable shaking for 10 minutes. Dentist came back and said this happens 1 in 50-100 times. Had my 2 fillings.
Felt like shite and went to bed when I got home.
2 days later my son asked what was wrong with my face and I have a massive, dark rectangular bruise on my cheek where the fillings were done.
I sent the dentist a photo and he rang back. Said to get in touch if it gets darker or starts hurting.
A bit pissed off to pay lots of money to be scared shitless, thinking I was going to die! and then end up looking like my hubby has had a pop at me! ( Never would happen).
The dentist thanked me for ringing but did not apologise. My son thinks I should ask for a refund!

Go to the top, there's a little downward arrow, the hide button is in there. Then go to your I'm on bit and remove it.

It was the adrenaline as he hit a vein, that went to an artery and then to my heart.

Unlikely.
The reality is you were shaking because of your extreme and badly managed health anxiety.

sure OP. Sure.

at the dentist. For 2 fillings

It Can be normal to get bruising, I have quite a few times.
Also the shaking was probably a mixture of adrenaline from the anesthetic and your nerves. I always shake a bit once I've had the injection and I'm not nervous at the dentist. I've had so much done , it doesn't worry me so I'd say it's all normal.

for the dentist’s sake, I hope “figured it out” means “I am not doing a damn thing!”

It's awful having health anxiety & a fear of the dentist in addition. Perhaps aibu was the wrong topic for this post where replies are robust & blunt on occasion. You may get more help & support for the anxiety about the bruising & dental fear from the health boards. Perhaps ask for your post to be moved.💐

I have had both these things happen.

I was having a course of dental treatment, and found that the anaesthetic injections were making my heart race, quite an unpleasant feeling that was similar to anxiety. So the dentist started using injections that didn’t contain epinephrine, and the racing heart stopped. The downside being that the numbing effect didn’t last as long, and I needed top ups to complete a procedure.

I also developed a bruise on the side of my jaw near my chin a day after having treatment. I do have a tendency to bruise easily, and on this occasion it happened, possibly due to an injection which may have hit a vein perhaps? It didn’t hurt, but was unsightly for about 10 days.

Both of these problems were minor, and just really ‘luck of the draw”. I seem to have developed a sensitivity late in life to the epinephrine component, so now know to avoid it. And given I bruise easily I now know to be prepared for that. The dental treatment was fine, these events just happened. No refund, just a flag in my notes to be aware of it.

Can people really not see how having an injection and reacting like that would cause anxiety and fear that something had gone horribly wrong? A bit empathy of goes a long way sometimes.

I'm not particularly bothered by going to the dentist, but I did find it upsetting when I had a very painful injection into the hinge of my jaw that left me unable to open my mouth fully, or eat without pain for a week afterwards.

The issue is the blame mentality of the Op (and her son as well it would seem)

Everanewbie · 19/01/2023 10:44

Hi OP. I think you've gotten a hard time here. You have a phobia about the dentist and a bad reaction has badly freaked you out.

Was the content of your post unreasonable? Clearly. Having teeth out is an operation, albeit a fairly routine one, and therefore it may well not be beer and skittles. But our reactions to phobias are irrational by nature, so if you leave it here with getting it off your chest you are not being unreasonable.

Maybe the dental practice could have handled you with a little more empathy given your phobia and unusual reaction? I don't know. Be reassured by your dentist and the experts that have posted on here that the reaction you had is relatively normal and expected.

JudgeRudy · 19/01/2023 10:46

Bruises occur especially if you were shaking and had to be restrained. Do you think thecdentist did something wrong? If so you need to be specific.

Your sons opinion is just that, about as relevant as ours.
