Should I correct a teacher?

In my son's recent geography homework, one of the questions on the sheet referred to the decline of coal mining in the North East.

"How would this of effected the area?"

No wonder the use of 'would of' is so widespread now, never mind the incorrect use of 'effected.'

Would you say anything to the school?

Good example of Muphry's Law! In the UK it's spelt pyjamas. 😉Just to let you know.

Just to let you know you spelt Murphy's incorrectly.

No she didn't.

@MatildaJayne Mumsnet is not confined to the UK so we may come across US spelling from time to time.

This is actually getting embarrassing now. You are right that pajamas are spelt pajamas when talking about the article but I will draw your attention to the fact that a pajama day is a day when you wear pajamas at home during the day in order to relax and enjoy yourself. It is not called a pajamas day. Every day is a school day it seems.

My son once had English GCSE homework. ‘Lady MacBeth was a right cow. Discuss.’

Love it! I wonder if they'd also studied Educating Rita in a previous term?

"Wasn't his wife a cow, eh?" 😂

Absolutely say something!! That’s illiterate and disgraceful.

This 100%

But you'll get some excuse of how it will be acceptable.

Lovelysausagedogscrumpy · 18/01/2023 15:32

And this is the reason such mistakes are commonplace. Do you not attach any importance at all to correct grammar and spelling of the English language ?

Yes absolutely, in fact I’m often a real stickler for the correct grammar, but in this instance it’s one small mistake, if the OP consistently sees errors then yes, she could mention it.
I feel there’s been a sense of outrage throughout the thread that by far outweighs the actual misdemeanour, I actually feel sorry for the teacher if he’s jumped on for this.

Moveoverdarlin · 18/01/2023 15:47

I would just hand the homework back in with red pen correcting both mistakes. This is basic stuff.

PurpleEmpress · 18/01/2023 15:50

Circle the mistakes in red pen with the corrected form and initial by yourself. Send back in with the child with no other comment made. My father would have done this and always left written comments on my school reports for the teachers to see. I used to enjoy the cats bum faces when they read them

OhMaria2 · 18/01/2023 15:50

Bellaboo01 · 18/01/2023 13:31

Of course not, you will sound like an absolute idiot.

What an odd thing to complain about.

The only correct answer in the thread, with raise it directly with the teacher as a close second

All the lunatics on here wanting to go to the head, or the head of year! get a grip dears, teachers are human

It’s not illiterate, it’s incorrect.

Very poor and extremely ignorant.

Pyjama or pyjamas in the UK, not pajama or pajamas. Are you American?

BackAgainstWall · 18/01/2023 15:53

...as in the teacher (not you!!)

ihaveopinions · 18/01/2023 15:56

I saw a cupboard in a school once which had been labelled 'stationary' which I suspect was full of paper, envelopes, pens etc. However, it wasn't moving anywhere so not necessarily wrong!

CatJumperTwat · 18/01/2023 15:56

I wouldn't bother. Correcting everything that comes out of schools would be a full-time job!

Eatentoomanyroses · 18/01/2023 15:58

Lord. I wouldn’t. That’s the kind of petty complaint that could tip someone over the edge. I’ve worked in lots of secondary schools as an English teacher. Many teachers outside of the dept have poor spelling and grammar even some of the English teachers weren’t great. I don’t think schools can afford to pulling people up over things like this given the pay and conditions for teachers.

ohdearydearieme · 18/01/2023 16:00

MatildaJayne · 18/01/2023 15:53

Pyjama or pyjamas in the UK, not pajama or pajamas. Are you American?

I am. So indeed it would be a Pyjama say in UK and a Pajama day in US.

BucketofTeaMassiveCake · 18/01/2023 16:00

I'd say something to their line manager but remember that many teachers hate to be corrected as they like to think that they know best. It's not what you say but how you say it, after all.

sanityisamyth · 18/01/2023 16:01

@PollyAmour no, she didn't ...

caringcarer · 18/01/2023 16:03

In primary school, my youngest son had a class teacher that was dyslexic. She handed out spellings that occasionally were incorrect. A few children in the class used to point out her mistakes and laugh at her. I was glad when he went up to next year.

ImustLearn2Cook · 18/01/2023 16:03

It’s interesting to see how pointing out a mistake is viewed as a negative thing. That pointing out a mistake could be upsetting for the teacher. So upsetting that they will potentially take it out on your child or no longer be able to have a good rapport with the parent.

It’s concerning how easily offended people are becoming.

Everyone makes mistakes. You learn from them, correct them or make reasonable adjustments and move on. There’s no reason to take it personally or be so uptight or retaliate.

A good teacher would appreciate it being pointed out rather than be offended.

i would just correct it on the worksheet, which i assume they'll be handing in.

Ummmm, it should be affect not effect

Well obviously! That's the entire point of the thread! 😂 Well, that and the disgraceful "would of"
